2011 PREVIEW EDITION

Jackson County Fair

Fair ambassador Holthe gears up for busy week
by MIKE JORDAN Staff Writer Back in April of this year, Gabrielle Holthe decided to apply for the position of this years Jackson County Fair Ambassador. In May, she was notified that the Jackson County Fair Board had chosen her for that position. When they notified me, I was pretty excited, Holthe said. It was kind of a crazy thought, my applying for it, and at the time I really didnt know if I had a chance at it or not, but am glad I applied and was chosen. It is quite an honor to represent the fair. Holthe has already represented the Jackson County Fair at three area events. I was in Windom for their Riverfest Parade and over the Fourth of July rollerbladed in the Okabena Independence Day Parade, representing the Jackson County Fair and handing out pencils, Holthe said. She did the same July 16 for Jacksons Town and Country Days Parade as well. Then, as the fair ambassador, I will be helping run the various shows at the fair, but am ready to do anything else they want me to do, she said. Holthe said she has enjoyed the parades and events and also noted she has found people pretty excited about the upcoming Jackson County Fair. This has just been fun, she said. I havent found anything hard about it. Holthe and her two sisters, Jade and Angela, are all members of the Heron Landers 4-H Club. Holthe and her sisters are heavily into horses and horse projects through 4-H, but she is also into photography and is taking her photography project to the fair this year, along with her horse, but is working to do a craft project as well. Holthe graduated from Jackson County Central High School this year and will be attending Southwest Minnesota State University in Marshall in the fall. I am undecided on a major, she said. But Im going to do my general education requirements first. I do have a strong interest in English and theater. When not performing her duties as Jackson County Fair Ambassador or working with her horse, Chico, she also works at Amigos in Jackson. We have five horses at our place, Holthe said. But one of them has been lame for a couple of years. He has a problem with the tendons in his back legs, probably from being ridden too hard when he was young. My sister, Jade, will be taking her horse, Rex, to the fair and will be competing in the games. My sister, Angela, will be taking two horses to the fair this year and just recently trotted with him in a competition for the first time. I will be taking Chico and will compete with him this year again. Holthe also likes to read and write in her spare time, as well as spend time with her friends. I really enjoyed both speech and theater in high school, she said. The last play we did was hard, as there were 14 of us seniors that had gone through high school and been in theater and speech together all four years. Holthe will be heading off to school with at least one of those special friends, however, as Shawna Grupe is also set to attend SMSU this fall. But not before she completes one final task at Jackson County Fair Ambassador. In addition to my ambassador duties at the Jackson County Fair this year, I get to go to the Minnesota State Fair and represent our county, she said. It will be fun going there too. See HOLTHE on 2

Calling all kids

All new Kids Day Camp planned for Thursday morning
by MIKE JORDAN Staff Writer One of the 2011 Jackson County Fairs new events is not as much a new addition as it is an expansion of a time-honored activity. Its a Kids Day Camp, and it is scheduled for the Thursday of the fair. The camp, which will run from 8:45 a.m. to noon Aug. 4, is a cooperative effort of the Jackson County 4-H, Jackson County Fair Board and several local businesses and organizations. Ann Henning of New Fashion Pork, coordinator of the event, said the idea stemmed from a desire to expand the former Daycare Day at the fair to include more kids. The day camp event will take place at a variety of locations across the Jackson County Fairgrounds. We will be offering the kids a variety of learning stations that day, including the Minnesota Pork Board, horses, rabbits, exotic animals, the Jackson County Fair Village, See CAMP on 2

Big Cat Rescue new to the fair

by JUSTIN R. LESSMAN Publisher Lions and tigers and lemurs oh, my! All of the above and a whole lot more will be part of the Big Cat Rescue Entertainment show and display at this years Jackson County Fair. New to the fair, Big Cat Rescue Entertainment is a nonprofit educational show that travels the country year-round teaching the facts about the worlds exotic cat populations and the dangers of owning them as pets, as well as what folks right here in Jackson County can do to help them survive. We also educate and help those who have exotics to better care for their animals so those animals, too, dont become unwanted, said Beth Corley, the tours animal care specialist. It is our hope that through our efforts we can educate the See RESCUE on 2

Camp: New kids event Thursday

the Prairie Ecology Bus and the Jackson County Fair Race Car Hall of Fame, Henning said. Each station will have a take-home item for the day campers and many of the stations will encourage participation by the kids. Henning said she is planning for 100 kids to show up in the age pre-kindergarten through fifth-grade age range. We are planning to provide a healthy lunch for all our participants in the day camp at the fair and will have daycare providers and chaperones on hand to help out too, Henning said. The event is being funded by grants received from the Robert and Helen Remick Charitable Foundation and the Minnesota Livestock Breeders Association, as well as local support from a variety of service organizations and businesses. Other area sponsors have committed to volunteering to help out the day of the event, Henning said. The purpose of the new Kids Day Camp at the Jackson County Fair is to give local youth an opportunity to explore various aspects of their local county fair, Henning said. For many of us, the county fair was an important part of our childhood. We would like to share those experiences with a new generation of fair-goers through this event. Additionally, the Jackson Lions Club has agreed to provide the funding for busing all of the day camp participants; those needing transportation to the day camp for their kids need to let the 4-H office at the Jackson County Extension Office know prior to the event happening. In years past, the Jackson County Fair Board had hosted a Daycare Day at the Jackson County Fair, which was a great start to what we have now developed into a more interactive Kids Day Camp at the Jackson County Fair, Henning said. This will be the first of a three-year commitment we have made to this new Kids Day Camp through 4-H. We hope that the participants enjoy their time at the fair and look forward to coming back. We hope, too, they will share their experiences with their families so that ultimately all kids will be able to see that there is a place for them at the Jackson County Fair. Our fair really does have something to offer all families. Jackson County 4-H Program Coordinator Jen Schoenfeld agreed. We are really excited to bring this educational opportunity to the county fair and I think it is terrific that we can partner with the Jackson County Fair Board and some local businesses to do that, she said. It is open to all kids in that age group.

Good luck to all Jackson County Fair participants!

world about these majestic creatures and prevent more from becoming a statistic or casualties of abuse or neglect. Fair board president Mike Stade said the addition of the Big Cat Rescue Entertainment shows to the fair helps fulfill a fair board goal. We want to keep trying to get new things up at the fair each year and this is one were excited about, he said. Its a baby animal zoo with tigers, lions and other exotic baby animals but its a zoo with a goal. The goal is to tell people not to keep these animals as pets. Jackson County Commissioner, former fair board member and longtime fair booster Kim Hummel had a hand in bringing the exhibit to the fair this year. She said the exhibit promises scheduled free performances, along with time for taking photographs with the baby animals and opportunities for kids to pet the animals for a small fee. There will be a tent area set up where kids can really get hands-on and get in there by the animals, Hummel said. If you want to take photographs, you can and you can go in and be around them. Its pretty exciting. Stade said the exhibit will feature about 10 different animals. I know Ive heard from some of the little ones who are real excited about this, Stade said. They just cant wait. Hopefully, it will go over real well. Funds raised will be used to help rescue, rehabilitate and provide a safe haven for rescued exotic and endangered animals.

Historical society readies buildings, displays for Jackson County Fair

by MIKE JORDAN Staff Writer Plans for the three buildings the Jackson County Historical Society maintains at the county fair are in place, said society director Mike Kirchmeier, and will be open and ready to welcome visitors on Day 1 of the great Jackson County get-together. We will have our three buildings open to the public at the Jackson County Fairgrounds in the fair village, Kirchmeier said. They include the Stall Church building that was located on property donated by Hans Stall for the church in 1887 and for whom the church is named. That church was built shortly after the donation of the land located in Section 35 of Belmont Township. The church was organized in 1867 by a group of eight men. In 1876, the Rev. Elling Eielson formed the Eielson Synod. In 1985, a few years after the church building was purchased by the historical society, it was moved to the Jackson County Fairgrounds and renovated, Kirchmeier said. This year we will be displaying a handmade wooden casket in the church. Another JCHS building that will be open for visitors at the fair village will be the Halsten-Olson log cabin. It was located on the Halsten-Olson farm originally, in Belmont Township, Kirchmeier said. The site was a little north of the original Fort Belmont site. The log cabin was completed in 1866 after the logs to build it were previously prepared and construction delayed due to the Civil War. The log cabin was used as a place of residence until 1943 and, for a time, was used as a school house as well as a church. In 1950, the log house was moved from its original site to the Jackson County Fairgrounds and is part of the fair village, Kirchmeier said. Along with myself, we will have board members manning the log cabin. I hope to have a display of the recently donated 1879-era postal mailboxes on display there, along with a variety of other unique items of historical significance from that era. The other building the historical society will have open and manned by volunteers and JCHS board members is the 1870s-era Jackson County Rural School District 5 building. The school building is pretty much the way it was when it was serving as the place rural residents sent their kids to receive an education, Kirchmeier said. When it closed in 1957, it looked like it does now. It has desks in it, the teachers desk, an organ and will have photos and information of other area country schools in it on display for the fair. It will be manned and open all the time. Another item Kirchmeier plans to display in the fair village this year is the actual commemorative sign for Joseph Coursolle, or Gaboo, the half Frenchman, half Native American Sisseton Dakota hired as a guide to find Inkpaduta after the massacre of the 1850s. That same sign will be erected later this summer at Ashley Park where it is believed Coursolles log cabin stood. We will have our fair village buildings open starting Wednesday, Aug. 3, of fair week and until 4 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 7, when the fair closes, Kirchmeier said. Each day we will be opening at noon and will close at 6 p.m. or possibly a little later each day but Sunday, of course. Kirchmeier said he is inviting folks to come in and talk about their history in Jackson County, view the displays, tour the buildings and talk with the historical society board members and volunteers about what they like about the preservation work the society is doing, the museum and what they would like to see regarding Jackson County history at the fair or museum. I will have my Civil War PowerPoint for people to watch at the fair too, Kirchmeier said. I am still collecting information on the Civil War and the Jackson County veterans of that war. This year marks the 150 th anniversary of the Civil War and Jackson County people going into that war.

Rolling out a new ride

The third new Kawasaki Mule, a 2011 4010, will greet Jackson County Fairgoers and offer a ride this year, thanks to the manufacturers community benefit loaner program and local dealer Larry Clymer (right). I think it does make our fair more accessible for everyone, he said. Accepting the four-wheeler are grounds crewmen Gary Comstock (from left) and George Svoboda, and fair board members Jeff Heser, Wayne Walter and Mike Stade.

Need for speed, push for power to be remedied at this years county fair
Truck and tractor pull, demo derby, racing and pedal pull will ignite fair
by JUSTIN R. LESSMAN Publisher Speed and power will be on display at the Jackson County Fair Thursday, Saturday and Sunday in the form of a demolition derby, tractor show and parade, speedway racing, kids pedal tractor pull and a power truck and tractor pull. Thursdays demolition derby event always a fair highlight begins at 7 p.m., in front of the main grandstand. The demo derby will be followed by three classes of racing IMCA Sport MODS, IMCA Hobbies and IMCA Sports Compacts. It will be quite a show, with the main demo derby followed by three classes of racing, said fair board president Mike Stade. Its a whole night of good fun. Connoisseurs of speed and power will be able to give a nod to the past during the Perry Allen/Bill Edlin Tractor Display Show Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and the Perry Allen Memorial Tractor Parade at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday. The tractor show and parade are always really neat, Stade said. There are tractors in every shape and color, from those that are fully redone to those that are maybe wearing their everyday pants. And the numbers keep getting bigger and bigger every year. Lots to look at. Saturday is the big race night at the fair, with hot laps getting under way at 6:30 p.m., and featuring competitive classes of 360 Championship Sprints, 317 Double Barrel Sprints, IMA Stock Cars and IMCA Hobby Stocks. Saturdays races will be capped by a grand fireworks display in front of the grandstands, the fourth consecutive year the Jackson Speedway has helped make pyrotechnics a part of the great Jackson County get-together. On Sunday, at high noon, youngsters are invited to take part in the kids pedal tractor pull. All tractors and equipment will be furnished. Sundays large truck and tractor pull begins at 1 p.m. sharp in front of the main grandstand on the fairs east side. Stade said this is not your ordinary, run-of-themill tractor pull. This is not like your typical tractor pulls these are big machines spitting fire and everything else, he said. It should be fun.
