Some people will tell you that home is the one place where you can always feel safe - where you can escape all your troubles and the cares of the world. Homes, some tell you, are magical places built of rainbows and starshine, kittens and puppies. That life is all chocolate and smiles when youre in your happy home. These ideas represent a basic misunderstanding of what a home is, of what it represents in your life. Your home is a reflection of you, of the years you spend in it. What turns a bunch of walls into a special place? When is a big box with a front door a home? Its not the walls. Walls keep out the rain and cold, but its the love of your family that keeps you warm and safe. Its not the roof. The roof gives you shade and protection, but its nothing like building a blanket fort at midnight, watching romantic comedies from the nineties and eating ice cream with your sisters. Its not the floors. They support your feet, but not like the support of your dad when youve come home from a long school day, sure that youve failed a couple tests. Ive lived in the same home my entire life. Though it was built in the fifties and came with a weedy backyard, through hard work we updated the furnishings and that weedy backyard turned into a playground, the stage for numerous theatrical productions and adventures. In my house, nothings the right size or shape. Everything is irregular and abnormal. Growing up, my parents occasionally investigated other houses. But I liked where I was. I loved the character of my house. Yes, it was small. Yes, there was only one bathroom. I didnt care. It was home. Its the place where memories, good and bad, were forged. It became a part of me. I used to sleep in that closet. This is the door my sister carved her name into when she was five, then tried to blame it on my other sister, who was two. My bedroom floor bears scars from my many science experiments - a blue stain there, bleaching here. Chipped paint and worn edges remind me of my mistakes and my triumphs. I know the floorboards, how they creak and how the patterns warp. Your home is not always going to be perfect. It will spring leaks, the power will go out and flies will get in through the window screen. So what makes a house a home? Its when it becomes a part of you. Its when it has the ability to remind you of your past your triumphs and your defeats. Its when memories of your life are imprinted in the walls and the empty spaces are filled up.
