Examples for verbs and prepositions that demand the dative

1. Prepositions

außer - except Example: Alle außer dir (dative) leben in Deutschland.

(Everybody except you lives in Germany.)

nach - after Example: Nach dem Sturm (dative) ist alles anders. (After
the storm everything is different.)

mit - with Example: Arbeitet ihr mit uns (dative)?. (Do you work with
us?)

aus - from, out of Example: Ich komme aus dem Supermarkt (dative). (I
come from the supermarket.)

ab - starting from, from...on Example: Ab nächster Woche (dative) bin

ich in Schweden. (From next week I will be in Sweden.)

seit - since Example: Seit dem Unfall (dative) denkt er anders. (Since the
accident he thinks differently.)

gegenüber - across from, opposite Example: Gegenüber der Wand

(dative) ist ein Stuhl. (Opposite the wall is a chair.)

von - from Example: Ich komme von dem Schloss (dative) in Schottland.
(I come from the castle in Scotland.)

zu - to, at Example: Ich gehe zu dem Haus (dative). (I go to the house.)

2. Verbs

antworten - (to) answer Example: Ich antworte dir (dative). (I answer

you.)

gehören - (to) belong to Example: Du gehörst mir (dative). (You belong

to me.)

folgen - (to) follow Example: Ich folge dem Mann (dative). (I follow the
man.)
