Objective of the Division

Kathmandu Metropolitan City Public Health and Social Welfare Department Bagdurbar, Kathmandu Nepal

The Department is established under Kathmandu Metropolitan City Office is dedicated for providing preventive, promotive and Curative Service and Social Welfare of the people .
Public Health Division 1 Introduction
Kathmhandu, the Capital City of Nepal and the only Metropolis, is the administrative, economic and cultural center. It is situated at an altitude of 1350 meter from the sea level. The population growth rate of Kathmandu is quite significant, which is more than 6 percent. Urbanization has been increasing in an rapid and unplanned way, putting pressure on the problem of urban basic health service. The people, who are living in slum and old settlement, have lack of knowledge about basic health needs and are not getting basic health services in the concept of primary health care (PHC). People of higher classes are compelled to attend hospitals even for minor health service. In 1994, Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) realized the public health problem as a major problem of the City and attempted to make some need assessment within the Metropolitan City jurisdiction. As a result, KMC decided to launch Community Urban Basic Health Service Programme in the city by establishing 7 community urban health clinics at ward level and Medical Facility Section in the Central level. Later the Section was converted into the Public Health and Social Welfare Department (PHSWD). Now the number of community urban health clinics has increased to 21. To provide acupuncture service, the Department runs an Acupuncture Service Center with 20 beds in Teku .

To improve the health status of the citizen through community participation, inter-sectoral co-ordination and collaboration providing preventive, promotive and curative services in the concept of primary health care 3.General Objectives To make primary health care service available, affordable and acceptable to the urban people to achieve the goal Health forAll To improve the health status of the children and women within Kathmandu Metropolis. To reduce severe and moderate malnutrition in children under 5 years. To improve the hygienic and sanitary condition of each toles of the wards with especial focus on food hygiene. Establishment of Metropolitan City Hospital to provide referal service. To reduce IMR, U5MR and MMR. To reduce mortalityand morbidity due to water, food borne and other preventable diseases.

4. PRESENTACTIVITIES
Social mobilization/health education awareness program

7. Role of MOH KMC works in close collaboration with the government to run all health programmes in the community. The government has facilitated KMCs health programs in: Regular supply of family planning devices like Depo-ProVera,inj Condom and Pills etc. Supply of vaccines for immunization.and National Immunization Campaign Supply of bleaching powder and jeevanjal for control of diarrhoeal diseases for environmental sanitation. Supply of IEC materials for health education and awareness programs. Supply of Vitamin A capsule

Treatment of common diseases at local level Immunization against communicable diseases through mobile team Drug scheme. Improve their livelihood skills, employ ability, assets responsibilities and engagement in the process of community development. List out and update the profile of NGOs, CBOs, youth clubs, women groups. Coordinate, mobilize and involve NGOs, CBOs in overall development of the city.

Sports & Education Policy and Programme


1. Establish Metropolis level sports development committee to define plan and programmes and coordinate with different stakeholders for the development of sports in the city. Carry out and support different sport competition in the city. Support and mobilize the local Youth clubs, sports clubs in developing healthy and fit citizens. Make arrangements for special events, International sports competition etc. Ensure all children in the school going age are at school and studying. Carry out Nonformal Education programmes for Urban out of school children and illiterate men and women in the city. Support and provide primary education in mother tongue in the city. Provide scholarship to economically backward and deprived children. Educate the citizen, empower the nation.

5. MANAGEMENT PROCESS The Public Health and Social Welfare Department runs under the Metropolitan Health Council, which is chaired by the Mayor of KMC. At ward level, the Community Urban Health Clinics run under the community urban ward health committee, which is chaired by Ward Chairperson. 6. Health workers and Ward Health Promoters Three health workers are deputed in each clinic to provide urban basic health service likewise to motivate and mobilize the ward people, 10 -15 ward health promoters from each clinic are selected as a volunteer. They are trained to provide knowledge and skills for the promotion of .health.These volunteers are working as a health messanger and motivator. Three health workers are working in each clinic

Policy and Programmes


1. 2. Prepare plan and programmes for urban poor and carryout the activities to reduce the poverty. Empower the women, dalit, ethnic group, backward people by providing them vocational training and income generating programmes. Mobilize and organize low income communities particularly women, youths to participate in livelihood programs.
