The Young Liberals and Democrats of Asia (YLDA) joins the world in mourning for the loss of 76 lives (as of press time) in Norway due to meaningless acts of atrocity that defile the very fabric of our peace-loving societies. YLDA as a pan-Asian organization that promotes socio-political
participation of the youth denounces the bloody rampage in strongest possible terms. We call for immediate and careful investigation of the incident; and quick resolution of the case. Justice must be served for the families, friends and loved-ones of the victims. MORE
As one of the leading and most-dynamic regional youth organizations in Asia, the Young Liberals and Democrats of Asia (YLDA) will send its Immediate Past President, Jan-Argy Tolentino to attend the United Nation High Level meeting of Youth on 25 to 26 July at the General Assembly, United Nations Headquarters. The Young Liberals and Democrats of Asia (YLDA) submitted an application for consultative status at the United Nation Economic and Social Council, April of this year. The ECOSOC consultative status is a means by which the United Nation can collaborate with non-governmental organizations worldwide. It gives civil society access to nearly all intergovernmental processes at the UN dealing with economic and social development, gender issues sustainable development, small arms, and human rights[1]. Following the end of the 2010 Memorandum of Agreement (MOA), the Young Liberals and Democrats of Asia (YLDA) and Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Liberty have decided not to renew an MOA for 2011. Accordingly, the Young Liberals and Democrats of Asia (YLDA) would like to express its immense gratitude to the Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Liberty for the eight productive years of partnership in promoting freedom, democracy and human rights among the youth of Asia. Mr. Harshana Rajakaruna, member of Executive Committee of YLDA and President of Liberal Youth Guild Sri Lanka, represented the Young Liberals and Democrats of Asia (YLDA) in this years Executive Committee (EC) of the International Federation of Liberal Youth (IFLRY) held in Timisoara, Romania from the 22nd to 24th of July. He joined the sixty plus delegates from different IFLRY member-organizations across the globe. MORE
As a follow up to his attendance at the Young Democrats of America Winter Meeting last February (see YLDA guest at Young Democrats of America Winter Conference), the Young Liberals and Democrats of Asia assigned its Immediate Past President and Chair of Advisory Council, Mr. Jan Argy Tolentino, as its official representative to this years National Convention of the College Democrats of America held at Washington DC., last 16-19 June 2011. Young Liberals & Democrats of Asia (YLDA) President, Hng Chee Wey wishes all Burmese in the world especially the migrants staying in Malaysia and around Asia a Happy Burmese New Year. As the Burmese ushers their New Year according to the traditional Burma lunisolar calendar, he urges the Malaysian government to treat the Burmese migrants as equal humans whether they are here in the country illegally or with a permit. In light of the incoming general election in Singapore, the Young Liberals & Democrats of Asia (YLDA) calls on the Singaporean authority to ensure that the election will be conducted in an orderly, free and fair manner. Leading the group is Hng Chee Wey, the newly elected President of YLDA; he formerly served as YLDAs Secretary General for 2010 and Executive Committee Member from 2007-2009. Wahyu Andre Maryono from Indonesia elected as the new Secretary General. Harshana Rajakaruna from Sri Lanka, Christoper Tsoi from Hong Kong and Muhd Khalis from Singapore elected as Executive Committee members. MORE
