...a bit about me

002

hello...

I am a design graduate from Brunel University London and have sucessfully comleted an in Industrial Design and Technology (BA) degree with second class upper division honours with professional experience. I have acquired skills and knowledge in a range of modules or subject areas from product development, graphics and branding to environmentally sensitive design. In addition to design, I have also developed a passion for photography and teaching after practicing both of these interests at Wellington College for a year, during my placement year.

...photography
Photography is a new passion of mine, it has been a big part of my life for two years and i have involved myself in photography by teaching my self different techniques to aquire diffrent effects. I believe my portfolio shows skills in taking quality photos and then editing them to a style. I learn by taking photographs as often as I can and look for new opportunities to get professional recognition for the photos I have taken and look for experience with professionals.

For Made in Brunel 2011a world wide selling book published by Papadakis called the colour of innovation was produced showing the innovative products and projects developed at Brunel University that year; in the back of this book is a network directory. I was part of the photography team responsible for photographing everybody to a set style; these are some of the photos I have taken for the book.

These are a collection of my better images taken outside. We all know sometimes you just need to practice in different scenarios, so that is what I did. I like taking pictures of nature and landscapes because of the rich colours and pure details you can obtain from the surroundings.

People and places are always interesting to photograph, you can get such a range of image types or styles just because of the subject choice.

Here are a collection of the more random items I have photographed; these photos are examples of how aperture and shutter priority have been used to get different effects on the images.

These photos have been taken by myslef and an then edited in Adobe Camera Raw 6.0. I believe it just goes to show you can take a normal photograph of a fairly un-interesting subject and add depth, texure , meaning and character to the subject.

...product design
During my time a Brunel Unviersity I was involved in a number of product design or development projects, some as part of my modules and other optional design competitions. The time and deliverables required for each project varied, some had weeks of development some only had a few days; some of the projects are purely conceptual whereas others followed a strict time plan and resulted in a functional model. Regardless of the time or depth of research that has gone into each project they are follow a basic design process.

A collaborative project with Bentley motors to design and predict the Bentley target market for 15 years on. My concept was aimed to make owners Bentleys stand out from their other cars when sitting on the driveway.

The Remote Control Lighting project aim was to design a light effect and fitting to be used to focus attention on aspects of architecture. My idea was to project seasonal images and patterns on the building depending on what season it was.

This was a design competition with a brief to design an innovative product for the sex toy market branded to the constraints of a company called NET 1on1. I was one of five runners up for my pebble concept, aimed to heighten sexual pleasure between couples and subtly allowing the pebble to fir into their living environment.

A final year project that involves a brand analysis on a chosen brand; my group chosen Wrangler. We had to re-position Wrangler into a new market for 2020 and then design a product that would suit that market. We came up with our reposition by identifying a contextual issue that may force Wrangler to change their market direction. My concept is an axe, helping to empower the survival of natural disaster sufferers.

A second year project aiming to teach students the importance of having communication at all stages of the design cycle with everyone involved in that cycle. For this group project we had to manufacture another groups design of a product. This is a pencil sharpener that is controlled by gears.

CAD visualisations of product development for a dinky target market; my design was a hand held herb cutting board and blade, designed to be easy to use, adhere to a strict, self developed brand identity. This product is one a set that follows a set of design principles and is not purely functional, this product is an iconic item is it to be left out on display in the kitchen.

...graphic design
In order to communicate any idea to is important to be able to present it well on a page. Graphic communication was involved in the majority of stages during my university submissions and so it is well practised. I have done a range of graphic work from report layouts, portfolio layouts to self branding.

114

The aim of this project was to brand myself ready for industry. This required me to think about how i would like to represent myself and how i would want people to perceive me when seeing a piece of my brand identity. Along with this portfolio there are a number of items that make up my personal identity.

As part of my brand identity i designed and constructed a fully functional website as another source for people to see and hopefully like my work, this used both practical skills in using adobe flash but also the knowledge of graphic layout to help show the user clearly what i have done and allow them to navigate themselves around the website.

When writing a report or designing a book you have to understand who you are targeting; when you understand this you can then select the most realistic communication tools to allow the users to understand what it is that needs to be said.

...sketch work
The ability to sketch allows you to communicate an idea very quickly. It also gives you a basis to work upon. Starting with a sketch may just be the first stage in concept generation but it is not the only way you can communicate a design.
