Outdoor adventures start at WalkAbout of Eagle River

The term walkabout was first used by Australian aborigines, meaning a journey one would take during adulthood to rediscover ones self. Joy and Kevin Nelson opened WalkAbout Paddle & Apparel 10 years ago with that philosophy in mind. WalkAbout can help prepare you for your lifes journey. We have a large selection of kayaks, canoes and outdoor equipment for those who quietly enjoy the Eagle River area, said owner Joy Nelson. WalkAbout features several lines of kayaks made in America. The store also carries canoes from Souris River and Mad River. Souris River is available in Kevlar and Carbon Tec. Mad River is stocked in Royalex and rotomolded plastic. Newly added to WalkAbouts outdoor equipment are this years stand-up paddleboards. Designed for recreation and exercise, paddleboarding is an activity suitable for all members of the family. For those inexperienced on the water, WalkAbout has staff to help choose the right equipment. WalkAbout also is a local Yakima dealer, providing expert help in finding just the right rack accessories to transport bikes and boats safely. WalkAbout hosts kayak and paddleboard demos every Saturday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Silver Lake Beach, no sign-up necessary. Any interested parties wanting details should stop by the store or call for more information. Canoes and kayaks arent the only outdoor items people will find for their time on the water. The store offers a selection of life jackets and swimsuits for family members who want to take a dip. Sizes are available for adults, children, and even the family dog. WalkAbout has expanded its selection of childrens books and resource guides essential to a safe and successful outdoor experience. Coloring books, insect guides and maps of Wisconsin and Michigan are just a few of the many items the store offers. While on walkabout, finding the proper footwear is incredibly important. WalkAbout offers a selection of Keen, Merrell, Chaco, Teva, Dansko, Jambu, Think, El Naturalista and Born shoes. SmartWool socks are available in all different styles and colors. The store also offers childrens and infants shoes including Keen, Ugg and Dansko. Those with a sense of style will find that Walk-

VACATION WEEK

ISU-The Machon Agency has experienced agents

ISU-The Machon Agency owners Bob Werner and Kirke Machon are proud to have an insurance agency in Three Lakes. The agency opened its Three Lakes location Feb. 1, 2009, but it has been family-owned and operated since 1971 when it was founded by Robert Machon in Park Ridge, Ill. The family history of the agency makes this business very special, said Robert Machons daughter, Melissa Werner. The business originated in the Machon familys home. Since outgrowing that location, the business moved to its own building in Park Ridge. The agency has been growing ever since and has served more than 3,000 clients. In 1979, Kirke Machon joined the business his father started, and in 1986 was joined by his brother-in-law, Bob Werner. Together, Bob Werner and Kirke Machon have more than 50 years of insurance business experience. Werner manages the daily operations of the Three Lakes branch of The Machon Agency. The Machon family has owned property in Phelps since the early 1900s and, in 1975, purchased a home in Eagle River. The Werner family became residents of Three Lakes in 2001. Bob Werner and his wife, Melissa, have become well known in the Three Lakes community. They are committed to the North Woods and enjoy contributing to their community through the Three Lakes office. Formerly known as Munz Insurance Agency, the independent insurance agency continues a tradition of excellence by providing business and personal insurance coverage to clients throughout Wisconsin, Illinois and the rest of the country. Because of The Machon Agencys affiliation with ISU Insurance Services, the agency has access to more than 300 insurance companies, the expertise of insurance professionals in more than 100 ISU offices coast to coast, and the resources of ISU for the placement of clients insurance policies. The Machon Agency offers clients the high level of personal attention inherent in an independent, locally owned firm, along with the strength and resources of a national organization. The Three Lakes staff is happy to provide free quotes to any interested persons or businesses. We always enjoy it when our customers stop by to say hi, said Bob Werner. ISU-The Machon Agency is located at 1794 Superior St. in downtown Three Lakes and is open Mondays through Fridays from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. For more information, call (715) 546-3642 or email rwerner@isumachon.com. Information can also be found on the agencys Web site at isumachon.com.

The GreenStone features a totally different look and material selection from the other CornerStone model homes

presently displayed. CornerStone has been building homes in the North Woods for more than 21 years.

CornerStone fulfills customers visions

CornerStone Custom Builders Inc. has recently completed its 21st year supplying custombuilt homes varying in style, size and function to fulfill its customers visions throughout the North Woods. We always have prided ourselves on being an innovative business able to adjust to the current trends and desires of our clients, stated Glenn Schiffmann, president of CornerStone. The traditional backbone of CornerStones business is the building of single-family homes. We are uniquely equipped to build the home that matches your lifestyle. Our homes are custom built with unlimited available options, noted Bruce Stefonek, project manager at the Rhinelander office. Stefonek joined the CornerStone team this past January. He is a North Woods native son with a wealth of building experience and knowledge acquired over the years of building in the area communities. His transition into the team has been effortless. He started up at full speed and has not missed a beat since he came on board, stated David Cox, vice president of operations. To assist you in your design decisions, you are invited to tour one of the eight model homes to spark ideas and generate questions as you start your home-building journey, said Jeremy Oberlander, project manager located in Eagle River. Our model homes are a great tool to use when sitting down in the planning stages. The ability to see a vaulted ceiling, the size of potential rooms or kitchen layout is invaluable, said Eric Klein, project manager at the Minocqua office. CornerStones originality allows you to build from your own home plans or sit down with their talented designer and bring a sketch to reality. Several of the homes we have built are a mixture of several home plans or a combination of our model home floor plans. We have many options to get you started, stated Darren Rubo, project manager at the Eagle River office. The CornerStone team has seen several changes in the past few years. More and more clients were requesting a larger percentage of green building materials and products offering additional energy-saving efficiencies in their new homes. In keeping the tradition of being a leader in the northern Wisconsin building circles and giving their customers even more options, CornerStone officially opened its newest green-certified model home, the GreenStone, in January 2011. The GreenStone features a totally different look and material selection from the other CornerStone model homes presently displayed. The fact is, CornerStone has been building green for many years and felt it was time to provide its customers with the option to certify their CornerStone home at little or no additional cost. While some of these products add costs on the front end of the project, the goal is to recapture this initial investment with energy savings over time while being sensitive to the demand placed on our natural resources and the North Woods environment, said Steve Schmutzer, project manager in the Minocqua office. To learn more, you are welcome to visit with one of the project managers at any of CornerStones three locations. The welcome mat is always out for your visit to any of CornerStones eight unique model homes. Every location is staffed with a project manager who will be responsible for the construction process from start to finish. The models are available for viewing in Eagle River at the intersection of highways 45, 17, 70 and 32, in Minocqua three miles south of the bridge on Highway 51 and in Rhinelander at the intersection of highways 47 and K. If your time is limited and you wish to speak to a project manager, call ahead for an appointment. Contact the Eagle River office at (715) 4790001, the Rhinelander office at (715) 362-7888 or the Minocqua office at (715) 356-0001.

The menu selection at Kathan Inn has something for everyone, including an all-you-can-eat fish fry every Friday night. If fish dinners arent your thing, dont

worry. There is a diverse selection of burgers and sandwiches, Mexican entres, homemade pizzas and wraps.

Land O Lakes schedules sale

The Land O Lakes area will host its communitywide garage sale from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 6. Maps for the event are available at the Land O Lakes Chamber of Commerce office. For more information, call (715) 547-3432.

All-you-can-eat fish fry is more than a single serving at Kathan

The all-you-can-eat fish fry is a dying breed. Whereas once upon a Friday night, fish fry feasters could send their plates back to the kitchen for seconds, thirds, even fourth helpings, these days most restaurants limit you to a single serving. Kathan Inn & Resort, however, still offers the all-you-can-eat fish fry, available from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. both Thursdays and Fridays. The fish fry features long, thick pieces of haddock, covered in beer batter and deep-fried to a golden brown. Sides include rye bread and coleslaw and either potato salad or crispy shoestring fries. Jim and Barb Domnick took over ownership of Kathan Inn & Resort in October of 2005 and welcome you to the inn for a great dining experience. Barb said, Kathan Inns fish fry stands out for a few reasons, the quality ingredients, like the haddock and the beer batter, and their close attention to details. The fish size is a cut above, too. The pieces are very large. Many of the same people dine at the Kathan Inn for fish every Friday and then, of course, there are many newcomers. At the Kathan Inn, the menu selection has something for everyone. If fish dinners arent your thing, dont worry. There is a diverse selection of burgers and sandwiches, Mexican entres, homemade pizzas and wraps. Kathan Inn has recently unveiled a new summer menu, keeping all of the favorites but adding fantail shrimp, buffalo shrimp and many new hot and cold sandwiches. Also new this summer, Kathan Inn offers buckets of fish on both Thursday and Friday nights. In addition to indoor dining, another great feature at Kathan Inn is the outdoor deck overlooking private Kathan Lake. When the weather is nice, most diners prefer eating outside, so we are fortunate that we can offer the outdoor lakeside dining, said Barb Domnick. Other specials offered at Kathan Inn include $2, third-pound burgers Mondays and spaghetti Tuesdays. Wednesday night is chili night (chili fries, chili dogs, chili nachos, chili burgers, chili burritos, etc.) and Thursdays, enjoy the 35cent chicken wings. Sit down to a delicious broasted chicken dinner Saturdays (or take a bucket home) and Sundays, take advantage of dog days hot dogs for $1 and brats for $2. Located in Eagle River at 8570 Highway H, Kathan Inn will celebrate its 90th anniversary this year. In addition to the restaurant, lakeside cabin rentals are available. For more information, call Kathan Inn at (715) 479-4260 or visit the website at kathanresort.com.

Chanticleer: creating memories on the Chain

Since 1972 Jake and Sue Alward, second-generation owners of Chanticleer Inn, have been offering nostalgic elegance and a variety of recreational and leisure activities right on the water. Located on the Eagle River Chain, Chanticleer offers pontoon boat rentals by the half-day, full day or week. New to their fleet this year are two new Crest pontoon boats with 60-horsepower, four-stroke Mercury motors. Guests can tour the chain of 28 lakes in the comfort of one of these new luxury cruisers. Fishing boats, boat lifts, canoes and kayaks also are available for guests and nonguests alike. For the sports and water lovers, a plethora of options are available. Tennis, basketball, as well as two clean beaches and numerous piers for easy fishing are all at your fingertips. You will not go hungry during your stay, said Alward. Chef Gary Kreger will tantalize your palate with a variety of dining options. Open daily, the main dining room has an extensive menu that includes everything from the famous Chanti-burger to their delicious lobster. Roast duck, prime rib and filet mignon are all just an order away. Featured nightly, specials include a Friday night fish fry and slowroasted prime rib Wednesdays and Saturdays. For the lighter appetite, a diverse sandwich menu will satisfy most everyone. For outdoor dining, the Chanticleers Beer Garden is an option. Offering cold tap beer paired with charbroiled brats, hot dogs, burgers, rib sandwiches, grilled chicken sandwiches and delightful Caesar salads, this on-water venue is a delightful change of pace. Chanticleer offers multiple lodging options. Each motel room and suite now comes with a 32-inch flat-screen television and a newly remodeled bathroom. All condominiums are two to three levels and sleep up to 10 people. The resort offers eight waterside villas with fireplaces and air conditioning for those hot summer days. Two of these villas also feature two-person whirlpools in the master bedroom. For the most luxurious, private experience, one must look to the Hudson House. For dining, entertainment experience, try Eagle Waters Resort on Chain

Eagle Waters Resort, on the shores of Eagle Lake, is comprised of the Eagle Waters Restaurant, Kee-Mi-Con Lodge, independent cabins, and the Trading Post, which houses the resort offices and Pickers Coffee & Cream. Kee-Mi-Con Lodge gets its name from the Chippewa word for I found it, said owner Laura Koranda. The Chippewa tribe discovered the property in the early 1800s. Once you experience the property, youll understand why they chose this name. We try to keep the spirit of the North Woods alive in most everything we do and offer at the resort. There are only nine ownership opportunities left at Kee-Mi-Con Lodge. Those who have already purchased a condo at Kee-Mi-Con Lodge have seen an excellent return on their investment. Make sure to ask about the new fractional ownership opportunities, allowing you to enjoy 12 weeks a year in paradise for less than $100,000. Amenities at Kee-MiCon Lodge are among the best in the North Woods. Each condo features southwestern lakefront exposure with awesome sunsets. All Kee-Mi-Con Lodge owners enjoy resort privileges, including the exercise room, childrens game room, sauna, tennis and basketball courts, boat slips, outdoor lakefront pool and off-season pool access. New to the resort is Pickers Coffee & Cream, housed inside the Trading Post. Pickers serves locally roasted coffee, Wisconsin-made ice cream and a large selection of antiques and vintage treasures. The shops name is inspired from the History Channels popular show American Pickers, a reality series that scours the countrys junkyards, barns and basements for hidden gems and collectibles. One of the best summer features Eagle Waters offers is their outdoor patio and bar. Resembling a mini log cabin, the open-air bar allows customers to relax on the patio and enjoy live music six nights a week (closed Mondays). A covered section of the patio provides the perfect al fresco dining experience. Eagle Waters Restaurant is open for dinner Tuesdays through Sundays. Highlights include their famous fish fry Tuesday and Friday nights, nightly specials, and the legendary Sunday champagne brunch with a 10-foot sweet table and made-to-order waffles and omelets. Take the family to Eagle Waters Resort by boat or by car. There is something for everyone at this Eagle River institution. Homemade fudge created at Tremblays

If the aroma of chocolate is not enough to draw those wandering the streets of downtown Eagle River into Tremblays Sweet Shop, the sight of workers forming piles of fudge into neat loaves often is. Candy lovers of all ages have headed to Tremblays in downtown Eagle River for more than 30 years. Originally Zimpelmanns Soda Fountain, Tremblays offers a variety of treats made right in the store. In addition to the store in Eagle River, there is a Tremblays in Stillwater, Minn., along with the original store in Hayward. Those passing by can see fudge and peanut brittle being made through the windows at the front of the store. Employees are often stirring large pots for a curious and hungry audience. Although Tremblays specialty is fudge, the sweet shop has many kinds of chocolate treats, including turtles, handdipped chocolates and chocolate clusters. Fudge balls are made in chocolate, coconut, peanut butter, maple and vanilla flavors. Tremblays currently offers 14 different flavors of fudge, including dark chocolate. The store offers a wide selection of candies.

Out of 11 restaurants mentioned Alexanders was ranked number 1, an independent was second, and a national chain was third, both far behind in customer choice.
