Homecoming festivities

Chelsea Downey Staff writer Do you have your mum made, your tickets purchased and your date arranged? No?! Better hurry up, because Homecoming activites are this week. Homecoming is the first dance and first school-wide organized event of the year. The ceremony is meant to welcome home alumni, but is also an opportunity for current students to show their spirit. One of the traditional activities includes naming five nominees for Homecoming King and Queen from different clubs and organizations around campus and announcing the winners from the court during halftime. One of the Queen candidates, Mariah Marquez, likes the club nomination system because they get to represent the club theyre in, instead of a straight popularity contest of senior favorites. Mariah said that she will still enjoy the game and dance even if she doesnt win the crown. Winning isnt everything, Mariah said, If I dont win Im still going to march with the band and dance at homecoming. As a member of the marching band, Mariah will have to divide her time between the homecoming festivities and supporting the team, but her favorite part of homecoming isnt the game. The dancing is my favorite part, Mariah said, especially those stupid songs like You Make Me Wanna Shout! Mariah also enjoys dressing up pretty for a day after a long night in the stadium cheering during the game and supporting players such as senior quarterback Albert Garza. The band gets [the team] real loud and krunk, Albert said, but we focus on what we need to do. Albert said that the team is never distracted by homecoming stuff, which is good because the team played a tough game last week against Copperas Cove. Its hard right now, Albert said, were taking it as getting better and not executing the small things wrong. Albert and his team prepare for the homecoming game like it is just another night on the field, but the cheerleaders, led by Co-Capitan Danielle Willett, are a bit more stressed. Preparations for the homecoming pep-rally and game, and considering that its also hamburger dinner for the cheerleaders this year, Danielle said, its a triple-threat. So next week will be very long and not much sleep. The squad is also in charge of creating the theme for dress-up days, after the Shy-Annes social board decides on the main homecoming theme. This years homecoming theme is a night in Paris, Danielle said, and the theme for Spirit Week is the city of lights. Danielle and her squad will spend the game, as always, supporting the team and boosting the crowd, along with band president, senior Lauren Hamburg. We give [the team] 100%, and play for them to cheer them on, Lauren said. We are always doing the best we can at halftime to help with the spirit. Homecoming spirit week will include a full week of dress-up days: Tuesday - Jersey Day, Wednesday - Bright Colors, Thursday - Tie Day and Friday - Go Big Blue Shirt Day. The Homecoming game will be played against the Ellison Eagles at 7:30 pm on Friday, October 17 at Merrill Green Stadium, the Royal Couple will be crowned at half-time, and the dance is Saturday starting at 9:00 pm at the Bryan Brazos Center.

Freshmen take aim at excelling in obscure sport

of a personal mind game rather than a competition against other shooters. You dont really shoot to beat other people, you shoot to beat your own score, Nash said, its 90% mind game and 10% skill. In his seven years of shooting, Nash has discovered that the trick to this sport is to not get caught up in your successes and lose your edge. The mind game is when youre shooting a perfect score and think youre on top of the world and then you miss and that could bring you down, Nash said, and you could lose the entire match. Brandy has a different outlook on the sport, but she also admits you get really discouraged at first. You can always improve even if youre shooting a perfect score, Brandy said, there are always ways to improve. Though she is not the only Bryan High student involved in skeet shooting ,she stands out for more than her abilities. There are other girls in the sport, but the girl to guy ratio is probably 1:75, Brandy said. Thats probably a little exaggerated, but theres not a lot of us. Brandy says that her older brother inspired her to join this sport, and her parents support her, but her friends have a different attitude. My friends dont really like it because Im gone a lot of weekends, Brandy said, and I have to miss a lot of things. Brandy said that the cost of skeet shooting is not just in bullets and targets, but also in the drive time in which she has to make the 35 mile one way trip three times a week, Brandy says and fellow 4-H member Nash agrees that the sport is not cheap. The gun costs around $6000, Nash said, and depending on what type of shells you buy they can cost from $40$80 for 10 boxes. Along with his teammates, Granger is also involved in 4-H and travels across Texas and Colorado Springs for skeet shooting tournaments. At each competition I try and beat my own score, Granger said. Ive won money, two guns, and trophies. Competitions are merely stepping stones to greater things, such as participating in the Olympics, a goal which Brandy believes all skeet shooters share. I think the ultimate goal for every shooter is to go to the Olympics, Brandy said. With her high hopes, of one day entering in the Olympics, Brandy has actively participated in many amateur versions. Ive done the Junior Olympics, nationals, our state 4-H shoot, and county shoots, Brandy said. Ive won something at almost every event. Nash also appreciates the skills of Olympic shooters, his favorite of which is Todd Graves. He also recognizes the skills of his female counterparts and their place in the sport.

There are some really good women shooters on the Olympic shooting team, Nash said. Haley Dunn and Kim Roadie are two of the best. Like any sport, skeet shooters must put forth a lot of hardwork and

G u n shots echo across the field as a clay disk explodes in the air. A shooter calls PULL, the lever is yanked back and the competition continues. This is skeet shooting. Freshmen Granger DeWitt, Brandy Drozd and Nash Porter are actively involved in this relatively unknown sport. All three students have enjoyed hunting since childhood and have a great respect for firearms. I grew up with guns, I like shooting stuff, Nash said. Though skeet shooting was not a family tradition, the Porters had a range by their house and Nash decided to try it out, and it wasnt too hard. I try to practice two to three times a week, Nash said, and I

dedication to succeed, but unlike most sports there is little public recognition for achievement. Skeet shooting is a sport you participate in not for the glory, but for the pure enjoyment of the sport itself.

The skeet field is laid out on a semi-circle with eight stations for shooting. Seven stations are positioned at equal distances on the perimeter of the clock with the eighth in the middle on a line between position one and seven. High targets are thrown from station one at one end of the semi-circle; low targets from station seven at the other end. Targets are always thrown in the same pattern of flight, but the angle of the shot varies because the shooter changes position as the skeet squad moves from station to station. Two targets are shot from each of the eight stations. One from each house, and doubles, where targets are thrown simultaneously from both houses, are shot at stations 1, 2, 6, and 7. Academic rigors a right of passage?

Logan Kickham Editor Courtney YBarbo Staff writer Tapping pencils. Drumming fingers. Biting nails. What does that even mean? We never even learned this! A student sits in class wondering how to reach inside her head to find the answer to the questions on one of her many tests that day. The stress of multiple AP and Honors classes combined with extracurriculars and the tiny bit of social life that there is still time for, creates a vortex where all knowledge seems to be lost. Some students feel that school has gotten so hard that it is impossible to do well or even retain information, but many others feel that the added stress is just a part of life and the expectations are preparing students for college. "Education has deteriorated because we're focusing on just getting good grades," junior Sally Clark said. Clark is not the only student trying to make sense of these unrealistic standards. Students are required to take multiple classes in subjects that will never be applicable to their life. "They are giving us classes we don't need, things we're not interested in," sophomore Luke Garret said. Added pressures from colleges to be overly involved in extra activities often leads to students feeling overwhelmed. Students are expected to be involved in community service organizations, more intimidating. It adds to the pressure, junior Allison Kalinec said. I was in high school 10 years ago and what we went through is not near as intense. Although the curriculum is getting more difficult, it is to the benefit of the student, AP history teacher Mr. Cryer said. Despite what many may think, there are some students that agree with this statement. "I think the level of classes is good, and it needs to be hard. It gets you ready for college level classes," Kalinec said. Students are encouraged to use this experience in high school, where there is a tight knit web of support, to get ready for life without that support in college. It is definitely better preparation. What has got to be taken into consideration, is that in AP classes it is not just about [these students] going to college but [they] are going to be the leaders of the free society and it's absolutely critily lost. The Clone Wars: Stupidity in a galaxy far far away

ering the origins of both the Jedi and Sith orders or even the years in between the III and IV movies would be a great show! But rehashing the Clone Wars in ANOTHER movie, and not even a live action movie, just a simple 2-D caricature without the original voices, is just pointless. The Clone Wars is just not worth the time and film used to create the movie. Point two: Lucasfilm is renowned for its astounding special affects, movie light and magic, and an animated film is such a far step down that the ladder disappears. When you have people that are paid large sums of money to continuously think up new ways of wowing audiences through a new computer trick, why push them to a lower level with an animated film? They could do that in their sleep! The answer is probably that Lucas had sucked all of the money he could

out of the live film industry with Star Wars and turned to his last hope for film exposure; bright and bouncy cartoons. When you are a gazillionaire like George Lucas, you can make whatever films you please, but why make bad ones. To recapture the fans he will most likely lose from the release of The Clone Wars, I would advise Lucas to avoid animated theater releases. Sadly, there are many fans that will line up outside theaters for any glimpse of a new Star Wars release, whether its live or animated. Though this film insults me as a loving fan of all things Star Wars, I also understand Lucas reasons for bringing this monstrosity into being; I may not LIKE his reasons, but I understand them. Even though he never needs to create another movie, game or action figure in his life to stay rich, Lucas will just keep on going, for better or worse.

As members of the elite media field it has come to our attention that many news sources push their own agenda by altering their report to influence the publics opinion. The 2008 presidential election is no different and with it quickly approaching the media seems to be having a field day. Media outlets should neither be republican or democrat, but should present the facts to the public so they can make informed decisions on their own. Historically, the media has taken a liberal stance on hot-button issues such as abortion, same-sex marriages, and the death penalty, as well as aligning itself with the left wing candidates. As a country that is so consumed with media, when the news source constantly exposes the public to one side of an issue, it can have quite an overwhelming impact on a generations thinking as a whole. In a recent issue of US Weekly the cover featured Alaska governor and VP republican candidate, Sarah Palin. The headline over a picture of her and her baby said Babies, Lies and Scandal leading grocery store line readers to believe that the article inside is about her lies and her scandal. In reality though the article was about lies told about her. The cover is misleading and it is doubtful that it is merely a coincidence that US Weekly is owned by a man who aligns himself strongly with the left. In the same article it mentions that her husband got a DUI, but it fails to mention that this happened 22 years ago. Acts of omission are still lies when presenting information to the public. This is not to say that some media sources dont align themselves with the right wing, because they do, its just that liberal media sources are more readily available for examples. Even the newspapers editorial board recommendation on candidates seems highly inapproriate because a media source as a whole should never support one party or another; they should remain neutral and only present facts. ---The Norseman Staff

Volleyball on track for playoffs: Setter shows leadership

Jamie Berthold Staff writer The Lady Viking Volleyball team is off to a great start this season with junior setter Kaylee Piatt helping lead the way. Piatt has been playing volleyball since 7th grade, when her middle school coach inspired her to take the court. Kaylee is the type of person her team will follow, lots of kids are leaders, but not in a positive way, Coach Simpson said. She is very good at motivating the team and getting them to play better and not wanting just to play for her, but for the team. Piatt is a versatile player who has been utilized at all positions on the court. My favorite position is outside hitter because, you can take out your anger and aggression, Piatt said. However, Piatt now finds herself playing setter for the Lady Vikes. Setter stands out from the other positions because I get to touch every ball, every time. Piatt said. So there is a lot of pressure, especially since I am the only one who plays my position. Piatt was one of the few people to make varsity as a sophomore. It is pretty hard to make varsity, you have to work hard. They dont just hand it to you, she said. Along with the hard work on the court, high school athletes also have to work hard in the classroom and the combination of the two can be very

stressful. You never have any time, and on away games you dont have much time to do your homework, Piatt said. Despite all the hardwork and determination that athletes have to put into a sport, a special bond is always created between teammates. For a high school team, we all have good chemistry and get along pretty well, Piatt said. With a 6-2 record so far in district play the Lady Vikings seem to be paving their way to another district championship. During preseason play Coach Simpson reached her 400th win. Here, at Bryan, Ive reached quite a few milestones, Simpson said. I got my 300th [win] here, then my 350th and now my 400th. When I started at Bryan, I wasnt sure how long it would take me to get that, so its very exciting.

The fighting Irish never die: One mans journey

Logan Kickham Editor All his life Daniel "Rudy" Ruettiger (Sean Astin) had dreamed of playing football for Notre Dame. With a blue collar background, Rudy, like most others in his small Illinois town, prepared himself for a future at the nearby steel mill but he never lost sight of his goal. Needless to say at 56 165 pounds, the Irish arent knocking at Ruettigers door. Every day is a fight to compensate for his small frame and little athletic talent. His lack of athletic ability is not his only hindrance however; his family has no money and Ruettiger makes poor grades in school due to his dyslexia. When it seems all hope is lost, Rudy is faced with the sudden death of his best friend Pete and finally decides to change what his life will inevitably become. He enrolls at Holy Cross with the hopes of eventually transferring to Notre Dame. Rudy seems to face one adversity after another, from little family support to the fear of having no place to sleep at the end of the day. With the help and guidance of his employer Fortune (Charles S. Dutton), Rudy keeps fighting and refuses to give up on his lifelong dream. Rudy is a movie that the majority of the public has seen, it appeals to such a wide range of people, but if you havent seen it, it should definitely find its way to your Netflix list. Sean Astin depicts the life of a determined and spirited person impeccably. his films over the years, he has continued to live a quiet life, unlike most others on the Hollywood scene. This mirrors the actions of his character in Rudy with an astounding resemblance. Rudy does so many great things with such little recognition. He never expects anything to be given to him despite his years of hard work and heartache. Rudy is the account of a person, no different than you and I, who must overcome every barrier thrown his way in order to make something of his life. This is the journey of a kid that stops at nothing to accomplish what everyone has always said was nothing more than a hopeless delusion. Its not a matter of size, strength, or talent, its about heart. Being able to give something every ounce of effort you have inside is a lesson that most people will never know. This movie is about taking the lessons a person can learn from the football field and carrying them over into every other aspect of life. Rudy is the true account of a person that was expected to achieve nothing, but was determined to prove to the world he could accomplish anything. This is the epitome of heart and dedication and everyone will take something away from this movie because there are so many lessons to be learned. Rudy is one of the greatest sports movies of all time and will continue to live on in the hearts of the people it has touched for so many years as new generations are exposed to the wonderful Daniel Rudy Ruettiger.

Disappointing movies at the box office

Courtney YBarbo Staff writer While in my epic search to find a good, high quality motion picture over the last few of these dreadful months, to spend my parents hard earned money, I finally discovered one that I thought might work. Thinking to myself, that Samuel L. Jackson is a good actor and his movies are usually high quality films and Will Smith was producing Lakeview Terrace, I decided to give the movie a chance at breaking the box office boredom. I was horribly mistaken; Lakeview Terrace was an awful film, at least in my opinion. The plot of the movie revolves around an interracial couple, the Mattsons that move in next door to Jacksons character, Able Turner, an LAPD cop. The movies web site builds the suspense of the film with the visual effects as well as the audio, but the movie failed to live up to the hype. What could be safer than living next to a cop? was ironically the films tagline. The couple begins to experience strange and unusual events occurring around the house; such as someone breaking into the garage and slashing their tires, and

panion of Frodo in the Lord of The Rings trilogy, Astin has grown to be a respected actor by Hollywoods elite. While Astin has gained a great deal of notoriety for

strangely enough the officer next door never seems to know anything about the events taking place. When the couple suspects their neighbor of these crimes, people brush them off because they assume the neighborhood police man would never do such a thing, but in actuality it was their neighbor. As the newlyweds decide whether to move or stay put in the new home, the couple begins to fear for their safety and Jacksons character learns that Mattson is pregnant with her first child. As the racist antics continue throughout the movie, I began to become anxious and ready for the ending to appear. I could hardly make it through the whole cinematic experience, because of the racist plot. This movie was was really disappointing considering the people involved and the reputation of the cast and producer. My recommendation is that you do not venture to the movie theater anytime soon to see this film. Save your money and hope that the box office makes a major turn around and begins to put quality shows on the big screen.
