The Napa Chamber leadership recently received inquiries from our membership regarding supporting Piner Ambulance. The letter that follows was written in response to one request; however, it carries a message about our process that our membership should be informed of. The formal protest hearing for the Ambulance Contract is August 3rd at 10 a.m., Jury Room in the Historic Napa County Courthouse. The leadership for the Napa Chamber of Commerce will be in attendance. Piners is a long- standing and valued member of the Chamber and we support them. For this reason, when it was not selected during the first RFP round, the Chamber decided to take up the issue on Piners behalf. This required a substantial investment of time and commitment by all levels of Chamber management, including support through the rigorous legislative action process required for such actions by Chamber policies and bylaws. This process involved forming a special taskforce and meetings of the Napa Chambers Board of Directors and Legislative Action Committee (LAC). The LAC meeting included representatives from Piners and the County where each presented its side of the issue and took questions from the committee. After dedicating these considerable resources and gaining a thorough understanding of the issue, the Chamber voted to support Piners and request that the County set aside the results of the first RFP and start the process anew. In its letter to the County, the Chamber reiterated its support for local preference policies, stating that businesses with a history of supporting

In 2000 a dedicated group of volunteers spent countless hours researching, questioning and constructing the Napa Chamber of Commerce Five Year Vision statement, which was adopted in 2001 and was updated slightly in 2005. It proved an invaluable benchmark against which to guide Chamber activities, endorsements and strategies. As with business, so with strategic statements change is the source of life. As five years had passed, the Napa Chamber Board of Directors recently undertook

testing the statement against current conditions in the Napa business and cultural environment, resulting in a revitalized document to guide the Chambers purpose and activities during the next five years. Part of supporting a sustainable future is developing this type of document for leadership to use in supporting our local economy, said CEO Lisa Batto. Ten years ago, the idea to create a vision by a Chamber of Commerce was groundbreaking. Today, many Chambers of Commerce have created visions for their communities and are finding great success in collaboration, building strong economies and representing business to government. Initiated at the Annual Board of Directors Retreat in November of 2010, the Board split into work groups to study the six areas represented in the statement: Economic Vitality, Education, Jobs

and Housing, Transportation, Protection of Natural Resources and Community Leadership. The day was spent examining surveys from the membership as it related to each piece for relevance and discussion. Out of this effort a smaller group took this work and, over many months, crafted a meticulously worded guiding statement and included a new category, Healthy Community. The Board of Directors adopted the final document on June 27th. Napa Chamber Chairman of the Board, Ryan Gregory says of the effort, In my year as Chairman so far, we have used the Five Year Vision many times as our internal sounding board while making decisions. We took the time to get the new one right and set the Chamber up for success for the next five years. The Five Year Vision can be found on the Chamber website at http://www. napachamber.com/five_year. html and will provide Chamber staff and leadership with a benchmark against which performance can be measured in the coming five years.

On the enhancements to the way the Chamber delivers its enews publications, Zimmer added, By consolidating our content and delivery we can give our members the news they have come to count on in a more streamlined manner. The Chamber will start including its Chamber E-Sheets with the Business Focus Enewsletter on a monthly basis, which will decrease the number of emailed broadcasts from three to one, allowing for a more comprehensive news delivery and less frequent enews emails. Below is a breakdown of news delivery changes and new marketing resources: Business Focus Enewsletter / Member News is now combined with the Napa Chambers E-Sheets into a monthly publication: Our award-winning Enewsletter and Member News publication will now include the Chamber E-Sheets to give you a one-stop web page to locate all of the news that will help your business grow!

Weighing in without all the facts, based solely on our demonstrated support for Piners, would be based purely on emotion and could compromise the long-term integrity of Chamber processes and diminish our ability to advocate for local business, including Piners, in the future. The Chamber shares the strong sentiment expressed by the community for this long-standing local business. And we have made our position clear. If the appeal process results in the finding that Piner Ambulance is competitive and qualified to do the job, then they deserve the contract.

Napa Chamber Benefit Golf Tournament Birdies Community Giving Goals!

The 15th Annual Napa Chamber Benefit Golf Tournament was held at Silverado Resort and Spa on Friday July 15th. A full field of 144 players jumped into golf carts on a beautiful Friday morning and launched into a day of fun, exercise, networking and competition. This fundraiser is a combined benefit for the Napa Chamber Foundation Housing and Napa Valley College Student Scholarships. Since the first grants were made in 2007 the total amount given back to the community to date is $56,475 from the Napa Chamber Foundation. The shotgun start sounded at 11:30 am with golf carts stocked for serious play with snack boxes from Silverado Resort and goody bags from Springhill Suites by Marriott filled with SWAG donations from many sponsors, drinking water, rules of play and a custom score card noting where the many refreshment areas were stationed. Compadres Rio Grille, sponsored a quesadilla and margarita station between the 11th

and Napa Chamber programs. The Foundations mission is to support and advance the educational, cultural and economic interests of the communities of the Napa area. This year with the help of the Silent and Live Auctions at the Golf Tournament, the Napa Chamber Foundation has awarded $10,500 back in to the community. These funds were granted to the Ross Game Business Scholarship for a High School Student, Cope Family Center, Junior Achievement, Napa Valley Community and 17th holes, and sponsored the Compadres Ball Contest awarding a year of free food to all players in the winning foursome. Several food and beverage sponsors including Markstein Beverages, Vallergas Market, Artesa Winery and Mumm Napa did a great job of keeping everyone happy and hydrated.

Silverado Resort and Spa catered the ensuing Napa Chamber of Commerce Monthly After-Hours Mixer with a delicious prime rib buffet dinner served al fresco under the stunning and stately oak trees. Golf Tournament Committee Chair Barry Martin and committee members extended their reach into the community and came up with some enticing lots for the Silent and Live Auction, which greeted everyone as they arrived. Local radio host and owner of Influence Internet, Chris Templeton, emceed the winning announcements and golf award presentations and also led off the live bidding for two stellar luxury travel auction lots. Congratulations to all the winners, donors, sponsors and to all the participants for making this day a great way to give back to the community.

The US Green Building Council chapter encompasses Marin, Sonoma, Napa, Lake, Mendocino, Humboldt and Del Norte Counties. The Chapter has long understood how the environmental and sustainable movement can revitalize and energize our economy and culture. The Napa Chamber of Commerce recognizes the importance of supporting our sustainable future.

Lisa Batto joined the Napa Chamber of Commerce eight years ago as a marketing assistant. It did not take long for her to realize she had found her professional home, but little did she know she would grow to become the Chambers 97th President and Chief Executive Officer. Lisa says; When I first started work at the Napa Chamber as a part-time marketing assistant, I felt that I had finally found my work home. This was a place that recognized my ability, my creativity and my energy. In turn, my passion for helping businesses thrive, in any economy, was born. Lisa came to the Chamber from a diverse work background with experience in many fields. From retail to receptionist, photographer to production manager, her previous 20 years held lots of transition and movement. Of her varied background Lisa says; I think my early job experience really lends itself to the Chamber profession because working in so many different environments and industries helps me understand the difficulties facing our business community. As CEO of the Napa Chamber of Commerce Lisa leads one of the most successful and recognized Chambers in California. She sees her role as comprised of three major concerns; I am the leader of a business organization with over 1200 members and the steward of their interests. I manage a team of nine happy, engaged and passionate people. I plan strategies and set goals for myself and the organization with the Board of Directors as my guide. One has to be a visionary in this business and in this economy in order to build a pliable organization that can flex with the needs of its members. Lisas calm demeanor proves invaluable in the inevitable stressful situations that occur in any business and her team has come to rely on this stabilizing effect in the two years since she took the helm. Lisa is the proud mother of two, Jessica and Charlie, and her family reaches six generations back in Napa. In the category of Little Known Facts, Lisa was a very strong competitor in the Monticello Horsemans Association. She had a quarter horse named Angel and they were very tough competitors. She enjoyed the Gymkhanas in which the Key Hole was her best race and she took second place in overall statistics when she was 16 years old. When asked which three people with whom she would most like to have dinner the response was individualist author Ayn Rand, Past Napa Chamber President and CEO Kate King, now resident of Texas and whom she misses greatly and lastly, Bill and Melinda Gates.

Noble House Hotels & Resorts is a privately held hotel ownership and management company which has been in business for more than 30 years. The company focuses on boutique hotels and resorts spanning the four coastal corners of America and in 2009 decided it was time to come to Napa. They acquired part ownership and the entire management contract for the River Terrace Inn and Restaurant Cuve at 1600 Soscol Avenue and began a refurbishing program which has yielded upgraded rooms, services and an enhanced attention on food service. The refurbishing continues with rooms being updated and plans being drawn to remodel the riverside patio. Florida including the Grove Isle Hotel & Spa in Miami, the La Playa Beach & Golf Resort in Naples and the Meritage, also in Naples. Most recently he was Nobles Executive Chef at their Edgewater Hotel in Seattle. Mackey graduated from New England Culinary Institute in 2000 and has worked with renowned chefs Roy Yamaguchi and Wilhelm Gahabka. He was named Chef of the Month in 2003 by Entree Magazine and has been featured in Travel & Leisure and numerous television stations throughout Florida and Washington. Chef Mackeys enhancements to Cuve include an on-site garden to harvest organic herbs and vegetables for fresh ingredients as well as new weekly themed hotel guest receptions such as Cupcake Happy Hour on Tasting Tuesday and Bubbles and Buckets on Fried-day. Restaurant Cuve features a state of the art wine draft program allowing many exclusive wines to be poured by the glass. The renovations at Cuve are now completed and the patio has a cozy lounge complete with fire pit and a live music schedule. Banquet services are available with a private dining room and a meeting room for larger groups. The hotel prides itself on their unique location which offers the accessibility of downtown entertainment and the serenity of a riverside retreat along the Napa River. River Terrace Director of Sales and Marketing, Victor Jigalin, says of their marketing strategy; We believe in our policy to not nickel and dime guests, so we avoid extra fees for add-ons, it is important to us to create a cozy Napa feel. We offer complimentary DVD movies, free internet access, fitness room, pool, free parking and free bicycle rentals. Our strategy has been to partner with key Napa Valley hospitality, food and wine industry businesses and form strong mutually beneficial relationships. offerings. Our goal is to ensure that our guest is satisfied when staying here at the River Terrace inn and dining at Restaurant Cuve. General Manager, Jeff Whitehead, is a long time Napa Valley resident and has been in hospitality for many years. Prior to joining Noble at the River Terrace property he was with The Inn at Southbridge in St. Helena. The team is confident that business and leisure travel will continue its rebound from the recent recession, and occupancy rates have been strong. In order to compete with the big franchise hotels in Napa River Terrace has recently partnered with Stash Rewards to offer guests a way to earn points at high-end boutique hotels across the country. Mr. Jigalin has been very active in the Napa Chamber of Commerce, most recently assisting with the Annual Golf Tournament, and says of their membership, The Chamber is a very important organization to us because it keeps us and all the businesses here in Napa, connected, up-dated and informed. By being part of the Napa Chamber business community we are better able to serve our guests, giving them a more comprehensive list of offerings while visiting us. Our guests appreciate when we are able to provide them with information about the most recent events and city-wide activities. Keeping on top of business, current affairs, restaurant openings and shopping options we are able to ensure that everyone visiting Napa is able to take advantage of all that we have to offer here in our wonderful town.

Joining the team last March, Noble veteran Executive Chef Jordan Mackey has already made an impact at Restaurant Cuve. Mackey is responsible for strengthening the relationship with the hotel and the surrounding community and has created an inspired new menu for Cuve. He relies on the abundance of local natural resources and creating lasting relationships with many of the local farms and producers throughout the community to create Farm to Table food, and Farm to Bar signature cocktails. Noble House and River Terrace Inn is pleased to have such a talented chef join our team. We are brimming with excitement and anticipation for the creative influence he brings to Restaurant Cuve, said Jeff Whitehead, River Terrace Inn General Manager. Chef Mackey brings a 10-year history at Noble House properties; he has acquired a deep knowledge of the hospitality industry, having worked in several notable kitchens in
