PROMOTING THE COMMUNITY
By: Ryan Gregory, Chairman of the Board and Lisa Batto, Chief Executive Officer
In 2000 a dedicated group of volunteers spent countless hours researching, questioning and constructing the Napa Chamber of Commerce Five Year Vision statement, which was adopted in 2001 and was updated slightly in 2005. It proved an invaluable benchmark against which to guide Chamber activities, endorsements and strategies. As with business, so with strategic statements change is the source of life. As five years had passed, the Napa Chamber Board of Directors recently undertook

testing the statement against current conditions in the Napa business and cultural environment, resulting in a revitalized document to guide the Chambers purpose and activities during the next five years. Part of supporting a sustainable future is developing this type of document for leadership to use in supporting our local economy, said CEO Lisa Batto. Ten years ago, the idea to create a vision by a Chamber of Commerce was groundbreaking. Today, many Chambers of Commerce have created visions for their communities and are finding great success in collaboration, building strong economies and representing business to government. Initiated at the Annual Board of Directors Retreat in November of 2010, the Board split into work groups to study the six areas represented in the statement: Economic Vitality, Education, Jobs
and Housing, Transportation, Protection of Natural Resources and Community Leadership. The day was spent examining surveys from the membership as it related to each piece for relevance and discussion. Out of this effort a smaller group took this work and, over many months, crafted a meticulously worded guiding statement and included a new category, Healthy Community. The Board of Directors adopted the final document on June 27th. Napa Chamber Chairman of the Board, Ryan Gregory says of the effort, In my year as Chairman so far, we have used the Five Year Vision many times as our internal sounding board while making decisions. We took the time to get the new one right and set the Chamber up for success for the next five years. The Five Year Vision can be found on the Chamber website at http://www. napachamber.com/five_year. html and will provide Chamber staff and leadership with a benchmark against which performance can be measured in the coming five years.

Weighing in without all the facts, based solely on our demonstrated support for Piners, would be based purely on emotion and could compromise the long-term integrity of Chamber processes and diminish our ability to advocate for local business, including Piners, in the future. The Chamber shares the strong sentiment expressed by the community for this long-standing local business. And we have made our position clear. If the appeal process results in the finding that Piner Ambulance is competitive and qualified to do the job, then they deserve the contract.

and Napa Chamber programs. The Foundations mission is to support and advance the educational, cultural and economic interests of the communities of the Napa area. This year with the help of the Silent and Live Auctions at the Golf Tournament, the Napa Chamber Foundation has awarded $10,500 back in to the community. These funds were granted to the Ross Game Business Scholarship for a High School Student, Cope Family Center, Junior Achievement, Napa Valley Community and 17th holes, and sponsored the Compadres Ball Contest awarding a year of free food to all players in the winning foursome. Several food and beverage sponsors including Markstein Beverages, Vallergas Market, Artesa Winery and Mumm Napa did a great job of keeping everyone happy and hydrated.
Silverado Resort and Spa catered the ensuing Napa Chamber of Commerce Monthly After-Hours Mixer with a delicious prime rib buffet dinner served al fresco under the stunning and stately oak trees. Golf Tournament Committee Chair Barry Martin and committee members extended their reach into the community and came up with some enticing lots for the Silent and Live Auction, which greeted everyone as they arrived. Local radio host and owner of Influence Internet, Chris Templeton, emceed the winning announcements and golf award presentations and also led off the live bidding for two stellar luxury travel auction lots. Congratulations to all the winners, donors, sponsors and to all the participants for making this day a great way to give back to the community.

The US Green Building Council chapter encompasses Marin, Sonoma, Napa, Lake, Mendocino, Humboldt and Del Norte Counties. The Chapter has long understood how the environmental and sustainable movement can revitalize and energize our economy and culture. The Napa Chamber of Commerce recognizes the importance of supporting our sustainable future.
Lisa Batto joined the Napa Chamber of Commerce eight years ago as a marketing assistant. It did not take long for her to realize she had found her professional home, but little did she know she would grow to become the Chambers 97th President and Chief Executive Officer. Lisa says; When I first started work at the Napa Chamber as a part-time marketing assistant, I felt that I had finally found my work home. This was a place that recognized my ability, my creativity and my energy. In turn, my passion for helping businesses thrive, in any economy, was born. Lisa came to the Chamber from a diverse work background with experience in many fields. From retail to receptionist, photographer to production manager, her previous 20 years held lots of transition and movement. Of her varied background Lisa says; I think my early job experience really lends itself to the Chamber profession because working in so many different environments and industries helps me understand the difficulties facing our business community. As CEO of the Napa Chamber of Commerce Lisa leads one of the most successful and recognized Chambers in California. She sees her role as comprised of three major concerns; I am the leader of a business organization with over 1200 members and the steward of their interests. I manage a team of nine happy, engaged and passionate people. I plan strategies and set goals for myself and the organization with the Board of Directors as my guide. One has to be a visionary in this business and in this economy in order to build a pliable organization that can flex with the needs of its members. Lisas calm demeanor proves invaluable in the inevitable stressful situations that occur in any business and her team has come to rely on this stabilizing effect in the two years since she took the helm. Lisa is the proud mother of two, Jessica and Charlie, and her family reaches six generations back in Napa. In the category of Little Known Facts, Lisa was a very strong competitor in the Monticello Horsemans Association. She had a quarter horse named Angel and they were very tough competitors. She enjoyed the Gymkhanas in which the Key Hole was her best race and she took second place in overall statistics when she was 16 years old. When asked which three people with whom she would most like to have dinner the response was individualist author Ayn Rand, Past Napa Chamber President and CEO Kate King, now resident of Texas and whom she misses greatly and lastly, Bill and Melinda Gates.

offerings. Our goal is to ensure that our guest is satisfied when staying here at the River Terrace inn and dining at Restaurant Cuve. General Manager, Jeff Whitehead, is a long time Napa Valley resident and has been in hospitality for many years. Prior to joining Noble at the River Terrace property he was with The Inn at Southbridge in St. Helena. The team is confident that business and leisure travel will continue its rebound from the recent recession, and occupancy rates have been strong. In order to compete with the big franchise hotels in Napa River Terrace has recently partnered with Stash Rewards to offer guests a way to earn points at high-end boutique hotels across the country. Mr. Jigalin has been very active in the Napa Chamber of Commerce, most recently assisting with the Annual Golf Tournament, and says of their membership, The Chamber is a very important organization to us because it keeps us and all the businesses here in Napa, connected, up-dated and informed. By being part of the Napa Chamber business community we are better able to serve our guests, giving them a more comprehensive list of offerings while visiting us. Our guests appreciate when we are able to provide them with information about the most recent events and city-wide activities. Keeping on top of business, current affairs, restaurant openings and shopping options we are able to ensure that everyone visiting Napa is able to take advantage of all that we have to offer here in our wonderful town.
Joining the team last March, Noble veteran Executive Chef Jordan Mackey has already made an impact at Restaurant Cuve. Mackey is responsible for strengthening the relationship with the hotel and the surrounding community and has created an inspired new menu for Cuve. He relies on the abundance of local natural resources and creating lasting relationships with many of the local farms and producers throughout the community to create Farm to Table food, and Farm to Bar signature cocktails. Noble House and River Terrace Inn is pleased to have such a talented chef join our team. We are brimming with excitement and anticipation for the creative influence he brings to Restaurant Cuve, said Jeff Whitehead, River Terrace Inn General Manager. Chef Mackey brings a 10-year history at Noble House properties; he has acquired a deep knowledge of the hospitality industry, having worked in several notable kitchens in
