everal residents of East Mountain Pride Avenue in the Long Mountain community shared the sentiment that a lush garden would add to the aesthetic appeal and value of their homes, and they came together to create their own oasis. The garden is in bloom all year round, with different plants showing their colours at various times. These vibrant blooms include: tiny white roses; red, pink and yellow hibiscuses as big as tea saucers; fragrant white gardenia and frangipani; red and orange Cuban cigars and canna lillies; flamboyant birds of paradise and heliconias; over 70 varieties of orchids, including the hybrid cattletonia; a few special plants that has not yet been identified and red and yellow Pride of Barbados, that countrys national flower and an homage to the gardens pioneer, Jeff Sealys, roots. The East Mountain Pride Avenue block garden is also a sanctuary for a host of butterflies and birds and a safe haven for bees to pollinate. The variegated hummingbirds, sunny gold canaries and a family of parrots feast on the natural bounty provided by the flowers and various fruit trees such as mango, guava, cherry, sweet sop, otaheitie apple and passion fruit.

cover story

Kristine Bolt
on the sAgIcor FAst trAck
I tend to be fairly pragmatic and I realize that you can only control how you behave and how you think. I cant control what other people are thinking, so if they think things about how I got to be where I am, then thats their business.

lthough no relation to Mr. Lighting Bolt himself, Kristine Bolt has indeed blazed a trail of her own on the business and finance track. With both a BSc. in Actuarial Science from the University of the West Indies, Mona and an MSc. in Industrial Engineering and Operations Research from the University of California, Berkeley, she has separated herself from her peers by defining and focusing on her own standards. Kristine is not deterred by the fact that the top executive positions are male-dominated and refuses to be confined. She continues to impress her colleagues with her hard work and is truly an example for young girls to emulate. Kristine began her career at the former Life of Jamaica (LOJ) in 1998 and left in 2001 to pursue her Masters degree. Upon returning to Jamaica, she worked with the National Commercial Bank Capital Markets before moving on to Advantage General which, at the time, had just been acquired by Michael Lee Chin. Even though there have been periods of challenge, especially as it related to her career advancement, Kristine

never lost sight of her goals. You tend to find that when you are young woman moving up because of your hard work, people are suspicious and that was probably the hardest thing to get used to, she said. I tend to be fairly pragmatic and I realize that you can only control how you behave and how you think. I cant control what other people are thinking, so if they think things about how I got to be where I am, then thats their business. Kristine credits her determined work ethic and discipline to her parents example. I have a teacher and pastor for parents, and my parents were very dedicated to school work, though not to the exclusion of everything else, explained the Immaculate Conception High School alum. She believes that kind of framework has helped tremendously in shaping her character.

cover story

Since her return to Sagicor Life Jamaica in January of 2009, Kristine has moved up the ranks to the position of Vice President in charge of Productivity and Customer Experience. She now works across all divisions of the company to help streamline various processes in order to improve operational efficiency and ensure that the company delivers better service to its customers. Currently, Kristines main focus is the quality of the customer service experience that Sagicor delivers through its Contact Centre and other areas. She considers herself very fortunate to have a boss who is very focused on what the company wants to achieve and how to get there, which eliminates the possibility of falling off-track. Growing up, Kristine never really dreamed of wanting to run a company or being an executive. I just wanted to have a job that I really like and really enjoy doing and I just ended up on a path that took me to an executive position, she said. Who do you admire in your professional life? My boss Richard Byles, who is a very incisive leader. I have learnt a lot from him and Myrnelle Akan, who works with AIC Financial Group. She has been an inspiration in my working life about how a woman can lead without acting like a man and without feeling threatened by a man. What advice Would you give to females trying to break the glass ceiling in corporate Jamaican? When you look in the work force in general, it consists mostly of women, so that in itself tell us that the leaders of our corporations for tomorrow will be women. It is important for young women to just work hard and not focus too much on what other people are saying or doing.

Where Will kristine leave her mark in the years to come? Im interested in our young girls of today, particularly teenagers. From my interactions with them, I realize that they place little to no social value on themselves. In the future, I definitely hope to work with them in developing their self worth. hoW do you relax? Read a lot, my favourite authors change based on my topic. I read for business especially a lot of research papers, as well as stuff for personal growth.

skin care

how to exFolIAte Your

Skin

xfoliation is the process of removing dead skin cells, leaving your skin radiant and smooth. It is common for women to focus on their faces and completely ignore the rest of their bodies, but it is just as important to exfoliate the body, whether you want to look smooth for bikini season or want to achieve an overall natural glow. ItemS You need for exfolIatIon: Exfoliating cleanser Loofah, body brush or exfoliating gloves Pumice stone Body lotion How to exfolIate Firstly, brush your dry skin with a loofah, body brush or exfoliating gloves as this preps the skin for the exfoliation process by removing dead cells. It is best start with the soles of your feet and then work your way up the body. Wet your body from head to toe in the shower. Eliminate rough spots and calluses on your feet with a pumice stone. For extremely rough feet, soak in a basin with warm water for up to 30 minutes. Apply your exfoliating cleanser to your loofah or gloves.

To begin, scrub your body in a circular motion beginning with the bottoms of your feet and work your way up. Be sure not to scrub the bikini area too hard as the skin is very sensitive. A body brush is ideal to exfoliate your back and other hard-to-reach places. Remember that your face is extremely gentle, namely around your eyes and mouth. Use a gentler product that is made specifically to exfoliate the face. Dont ignore your hands. Rinse your body with lukewarm water, then with the coldest water you can stand, followed by a shower gel to soften your skin, if you like. After your shower, apply a moisturizing body lotion all over. Moisturizers containing alpha or beta hydroxy acids are ideal choices because these acids continue to remove dead skin cells. Exfoliation is drying to the skin, so you must keep your skin hydrated by using a moisturizer daily. note: dont exfoliate your skin if you are sunburned or have any open cuts or wounds.
