1. What types of technology do you implement throughout your school district- at all levels? The types of technology that is implemented throughout Shaler Area School District is varied between the different levels. Some of the main technologies that are implemented through all grades are Promethean Boards, Activotes, laptop carts, and Flip cameras. K-3 use programs such as Study Island, and K-1 use Splash into Phonics. K-6 use Story-Tell and First in Math, and Read About Reading Counts, System 44 and these are basically interventions and are used through 8th grade.

2. What is your vision of where you want your school district to be in terms of technology? The vision would be that teachers model what technologies they are using and in turn teach the children how to appropriately use it. The vision, though, changes yearly and is based on current trends. Want to be able keep students on the cutting edge of technology. It is important to actively engage the students and be able to allow the students to select their own technology when they are learning. The biggest challenge of reaching a vision would be the lack of meaning involved in Professional Development days.

3. What percentage of teachers, in your opinion, uses the available technology and uses it effectively? Would want the building level administrator to be supportive of technology and encourage and expect their teachers to use it. Now, between 70-75% of teachers are believed to use technology and use it effectively. Also, the vision would be to increase the usage of technology in subject areas such as language arts and continue the use in the sciences.

4. How you decide who receives the newer technology in your school district?

The decisions in the past have been based on 2 factors. The two factors are grants and the classrooms for the future grant. Teacher were able to write grants asking for specific technologies for their individual classrooms and when CFF was instated, teachers received the newer technologies in the classrooms or made labs and laptops available. Teachers demonstrated their ability to use the type of technology for the grants the desired. 5. Who comprises the technology department and who makes the final decisions regarding the implementation of technology? Bryan and Terri- Tech Department Jennifer- Network Administrator John, Rick, and Mitch- IT guys Tom and Jackie- Information Systems and Manager Informations

He is always looking out for the best interest of the school district. 7. What are your roles responsibilities as an IT director? Do you have any contact with students in the district? The roles and responsibilities are endless. Some of them are as follows: network administrator, printers, email, filters, direct deposit, IUP apps, child accounting, all state reporting, scanning-4sight, dibels, food services, mailings, gradebook, hardware ordering, toner, parent portal, Phone system, central registration, district website, video surveillance, strategic planning, and date warehouse. 9. Do you have specific people assigned to grade levels or buildings who are responsible for trouble-shooting and maintenance issues? Yes! Each IT is designated to a building or multiple buildings where they are staged throughout the school day. Each building also has a 1st level tech support who is responsible for helping out with problems that arise in their buildings. If they are unable to fix the problem, a help ticket is filled out and the appropriate IT person will handle the problem at their earliest convenience.

10. What subjects do you feel technology is used for most in your district? Is there a subject you feel that technology would not fit into? Technology is most used in the Sciences but they are starting to implement it more in Reading, Math, and more in Science. Social Studies are the area that sees the least usage of technology. Teachers are even implementing technology into the arts and gym classes as well. Foreign languages are using programs such as audacity in their curriculum. 11. What are you expectations for teachers in your district in terms of technology? The expectations for the teachers in the district are that they are openminded and are willing to try new things. He doesnt expect perfection and knows that teachers will fail when trying out new things, but asks that they dont give up. If you teach the same way, you will always get the same result. Teachers need to be observant and be able to notice what types of technology skills their students are already coming in with.
