110719 - Renewing a Z visa in China - The Physical
Every year foreigners in China (like almost every country) have to renew our business visas (shngw qinzhng, ). I lived in Shanghai for years. Each year I renewed my visa at the Public Security Bureau (gngn j, ) in Pudong, next to Century Park. Recently it was easy and quick, and over the years they have added customer service to their service, so now they say hello and thank you and sometimes smile. I didnt have to have a complete physical check (tjin, ) for a couple of years, as for the past few years each year I was just renewing. In the past, getting the physical exam was something we all dreaded in Shanghai. It is better now, but in 1999 we had to go outside the main city about 45 minutes to a small, dreary courtyard clinic. It was the designated place where we all had to get the physical. The cost was 350 Chinese Renminbi (1 USD = 6.5 RMB now). They took your blood, took an X-Ray, blood pressure (xuy, ), height (shngo, ), weight (tzhng, ), etc. It was OK, but the
conditions did not seem very good, and nobody spoke English at all. I was told the main reason for the physical was to keep foreigners with AIDS and other diseases (jibing, ) out. You must get your visa in the city you live in. I moved to Guangzhou last year, so now I have to update (xqin, ) my visa in Guangzhou. The three main types of visa in China are L (Tourist), F (Short Term Business, can meet and sign contracts but not get a salary), and Z (Work Visa). I have had a Z visa since 1999. I was pleasantly surprised to see a much nicer facility in Guangzhou. The physical was more intensive (adding EKG, urine test, eye exam, and ultrasound of my internal organs), but the equipment looked much newer and more sanitary. In the blood test I sat in a chair and rested my left arm on a counter as the nurse sterilized my arm, opened a new single use needle in front of my eyes, then expertly inserted into my arm to draw blood. She took two test tubes of heart juice, put a bar code sticker with my name and info on them, and then scanned them with a supermarket laser. After an iodine swab and a band aid, she told me in passable English to apply pressure for three minutes. Then Next!, and a French guy came and sat down in my place. She said they give physicals to between 150 to 200 people per day at 480 RMB a piece. You do the math. In the internal organ exam room, the doctor had a loose leaf binder with his questions in fifteen languages. Do I now or did I ever have a large list of diseases or conditions I did not ever have? No, I do and did not. I didnt get to keep a picture of my liver, but I was able to have the experience of seeing it and wiping the ultrasound goo off my abdomen.
