    TheHongKongMarriageOrdinance(Chapter181)governsmarriagescontractedinHongKongand UnitedStatescitizenswishingtomarryheremustcomplywiththeprovisionsofthislaw.Thereare noresidencyrequirementsforpersonswishingtomarryinHongKong. Atleastseventeendaysbeforethemarriageistotakeplace,oneofthepartiestotheproposed marriageshouldappearpersonallybeforetheHongKongMarriageRegistrationOfficetofilea NoticeofMarriage.TheMarriageRegistrationOfficeislocatedat3/F,QueenswayGovernment Offices,LowBlock,HongKong(tel:28672787).ThepersonfilingtheNoticeofMarriagemust producehis/herpassportandaxeroxcopyofthevitalstatisticspagesofhis/herfiance(e)'sidentity documents.TheNoticeisvalidforthreemonthsafteritsreceiptbytheRegistrar.Afterthree months,theNoticebecomesvoidandfreshnoticemustbegiven.TheRegistrationOfficecharges HK$305(aboutU.S.$40)toprocessaNoticeofMarriageapplication. AftertheNoticeisfiled,15"clear"days(17daysincludingSundays)mustelapsewhenpersonsso authorizedbylawmayfileawrittenobjectiontotheproposedmarriagewiththeRegistrarof Marriages.Ifnoobjectionisreceivedbytheendofthisperiod,themarriagemaytakeplace. Childrenunderage16maynotmarryinHongKong.Minors(1621)needthewrittenconsentof theirfather(ormotheriftheirfatherisdeceasedorincompetent)orlegalguardian.Divorcedor widowedpersonsshouldproducedocumentaryevidenceoftheirstatus.Divorcedpersonsmustfill outasupplementaryformwhenfilingtheNoticeofMarriage.Theyarealsorequiredtoshowa certifiedcopyoftheCourt'sfinaldivorcedecreesometimebeforethemarriagetakesplace.Armed forcespersonnelmusthavewrittenpermissiontomarryfromthesenioroverseasareacommander oftheirparticularbranchofservice.Inthesecases,registrationofmarriagemaytakeupto6weeks. IntheeventthatneitherpartytothemarriageisabletoappearpersonallytofiletheNoticeof Marriage,thenecessaryformsincludingthesupplementaryformrequiredofdivorcedpersons,can beobtainedbywritingtheRegistrarofMarriages.TheseformsmustbeexecutedbeforeaNotary PublicandreturnedtotheRegistrybyregisteredairmailalongwithafeeofHK$305(whichcanbe abankdraftmadepayabletotheHongKongGovernment).Themarriagecantakeplacenoearlier thanseventeendaysaftertheRegistrarhasreceivedthecompletedforms.AftertheirarrivalinHong Kong,thetwopartiestothemarriagemustappearinpersonbeforetheRegistrarandshowtheir identificationdocuments. Twowitnessesarerequiredatthemarriageceremony.PersonneloftheAmericanConsulateGeneral inHongKongcannotwitnessmarriages.TheactualceremonycantakeplaceeitherataMarriage RegistryOfficeorinalicensedchurch.ItisnotnecessarytohavebothachurchandRegistry wedding.AtthetimetheNoticeofMarriageisfiled,adatecanbearrangedforaRegistrywedding. OnlocalholidaysitmaybedifficulttosecureandappointmenttomarryatCityHallbutitis

    usuallypossibletoarrangeformarriageceremoniesatotherRegistryoffices,particularlyinthe outlyingareas. Atthetimeoftheceremony,anadditionalHK$715(aboutU.S.$93)onweekdaysandHK$1,935 (aboutU.S.$251)onSundaysandSaturdaysischargedforthemarriagecertificate.Extracopiescan beobtainedfornominalfee.
