QUESTION 1 a) A cylindrical can 150 mm in diameter is filled to a depth of 100 mm with a fuel oil. The oil has a mass 1.65 kg. Calculate its density, specific weight and specific gravity. (10 marks) The space between two square flat parallel plates is filled with oil. The area of the each plate is 72 cm x 72 cm. The thickness of the oil film is 15.5 mm. The upper plate moves at 5.5 m/s with required force at 105 N to maintain the speed. Determine: i) ii) the dynamic viscosity of the oil, and the kinematic viscosity of the oil if the specific gravity of the oil is 0.97. (10 marks)

b)

QUESTION 2 a) Figure Q2(a) shows a tank of oil with one side open to the atmosphere and the other side sealed with air above the oil. The oil has a specific gravity of 0.90. Calculate the gage pressure at points A, B, C, D, E, and F and the air pressure in the right side of the tank. (8 marks)

QUESTION 3
a) Oil (sg = 0.97) is flowing in a pipe of diameter 200 mm with velocity of 2.5 m/s and is converging into a pipe of 120 mm at a level 3 m down as shown in Figure Q3(a). Determine: i) ii) iii) the volume flow rate in m3/s of the oil flow in the pipe, the velocity in m/s at level 2, and the fluid pressure at level 2 in kPa. (10 marks)

QUESTION 4 A reducing elbow is used to deflect water flow at a rate of 30 kg/s in a horizontal pipe upward by an angle 9 = 35 from the flow direction while accelerating it. The elbow discharges water into the atmosphere. The radius of the elbow is r, = 120cm at the inlet and r2 =30cm at the exit. The elevation difference between the centers of the exit and the inlet is 3 m. The mass of the elbow and water in it is 55 kg. Determine: ) i) ii) the force in horizontal direction, the force in vertical direction, and magnitude and direction of the resultant force exerted on the outlet by the water. (20 marks) r2 = 30 cm
