2007 National Educational Technology Standards Students apply digital tools to gather, evaluate, and use information. Students: b. locate, organize, analyze, evaluate, synthesize, and ethically use information from a variety of sources and media. Objectives Content Area- The students will locate information about the Victorian Period and design a flyer to present the information. Technology- The students will use an informational website to conduct research and then organize and present the information using Microsoft publisher. Introduce Learning Activity The teacher will ask students to think of a piece of art such as film, literature, t.v. show, painting, music, etc. and write down how its been influenced by the society in which it was made. Questions for the students to consider will be How was the piece of art influenced by technology, current events, political issues, culture, etc.? The students will write down their answers. The teacher will call on a few students to share their responses. This introductory activity will help students make connections between forms of art that they're interested in and the upcoming class literature. Provide Information The students will be expected to conduct research about different aspects of the Victorian Era by going to the website <Victoriaspast.com.> Each student will be assigned an article to read about a different aspect of the society of the Victorian Era This lesson will take place before the class begins reading a novel from the Victorian Era. Its important for students because they need to learn about the society of the time

period in which a novel was written to have a better understanding of the novel. After the students have conducted research, they will organize the research into a flyer on Microsoft Publisher. They will then present their flyers to the class. The students will not be given a detailed grade. The teacher will only mark down whether the assignment was complete or incomplete. Provide Practice Content Area- In previous lessons, the students have been assigned to conduct biographical research on authors. This will serve as practice for this assignment because students have become familiar with doing research thats relevant background information to literature. This lesson will challenge students to go further by having to decide on their own what type of information is relevant rather than telling them exactly what they need to research. Technology- The teacher will guide the students through Microsoft Office Publisher before the assigned task. The teacher will show the students different aspects of Microsoft Publisher such as choosing an appropriate template, controlling the font, controlling the colors, and inserting pictures. The students will also be given practice assignments that arent graded in which they are given information to design a document in Microsoft Publisher. The teacher will individually assist each student in their practice assignments. Knowledge of Results While the students are reading their articles, the teacher will approach each student to answer any questions they have about the reading or bring up additional information that's relevant to their articles. When students present their flyers, the teacher will inform the student of key information that the student left out of the flyer or clarify information that the student may not have presented completely accurately. Review the Activity The students will be required to take notes while their peers are giving their presentations. They will submit a piece of paper in which they write down three things that they learned from the presentations their peers gave. The teacher will mark down whether the assignment is complete or incomplete. The teacher will use these assignments to decide if the students have sufficiently learned an adequate amount of information about the Victorian Era, or if the class needs to spend more time on learning about the Victorian Era before beginning a novel. Methods of Assessment Content Area- Students will be assessed by the flyers they create in Microsoft Publisher and their presentations. The teacher will evaluate if the students have included enough information to adequately explain their topics. The teacher will also evaluate if they organized the information in appropriate ways. Technology- Students will be assessed by the flyers they create in Microsoft Publisher. The teacher will evaluate if the students use appropriate fonts and organize the information in an appropriate way.
