SUMMER FAITH 2011 GATHER AROUND THE TABLE SEPTEMBER 9 & 10, 2011
2011

Yes, school will be back in session, and summer vacations a fond memory, but this years Summer Faith will still occur before the autumnal equinox, hence summer. In keeping with the ever-changing needs of the lives of the parishioners we have chosen to make this years Summer Faith event a mini retreat! We will be incorporating the preparation and sharing of meals in a creative and innovative way but also intertwine the scriptures and biblical passages into modern day relevance. A true feast for young and old! On a diet? Well, summer faith also promises new and exciting adventures for all ages without expanding the waistline! We are pleased to announce that we will be hosting Tracy Radosevic, a nationally acclaimed biblical storyteller. She will captivate you with her natural story telling ability and her uncanny adaptation of scripture. I encourage you to look at her web site and catch a glimpse of humor and raw talent. www.tracyrad.com Want to help Set The Table? Please let us know if you would like to help. If you have a specific area of interest let us know that as well. Brochures may be found on The Table. Reservations required by September 1.

THE RECTORS RAMBLINGS

My earliest memory of church is of sitting next to my father and how safe and warm that felt. Its an image that shapes much of what I feel the church is. The word family is overused today, more symbol than substance, but in my heart of hearts I think that the church today is a larger expression of family that can enfold all of us. For many of us these days, family is a distant concept. My nearest relative lives outside of Florence, South Carolina. Beyond that we have to go to Lexington, Kentucky, and beyond to find family. This experience is true for most of us. But the church can make family a reality here in Wilmington. In coming to church we accept a call to be here for one another; to celebrate our common joys and uphold one another in our sorrows. An immediate expression, almost a sacrament of this, is the way we accept children in church at St. Andrews. From a little baby who now has 60 or 70 doting grandparents at the 7:30 service at Lebanon, to the mob we have at the 9:00, to the smaller group at 11:00 who bravely come and stand around the altar on first Sundays, or come to see a new brother or sister entering the family at the font, children are a vital part of who we are as a worshipping community. Aside from the most obvious lesson children teach us, that in the church, we are not the ones in charge, they should remind us that we are surrounded-- not just by children, but by brothers, sisters, aunts, uncles, cousins, parents, grandparents. Families are challenged today, not least by the fragmentation with which we all live. But in Gods vision of a world made whole, the church can be the new family which binds us all together. I believe that at St. Andrews we experience this in a unique and powerful way.

MARKS MUSINGS
"Come, you that are blessed by my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world; 35for I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, 36I was naked and you gave me clothing, I was sick and you took care of me, I was in prison and you visited me. Matthew 25:34-36

What does the Farmworker Ministry do? "The Episcopal Farmworker Ministry responds to the physical, emotional, and spiritual needs of migrant and seasonal farmworkers and their families, and actively supports opportunities for them to become self-directive." What did our youth do while at the Farmworker Ministry? Leading up to the mission, we gathered clothes, soap, shampoo, and other toiletries for the farmworkers. We could barely fit everything in our 15 - passenger van. We headed down I-40 looking a little like the Beverly Hillbillies. Once we arrived, we joined another youth group from St. Peter's Episcopal in Washington, NC. We learned about the Farmworker Ministry from Padre Tony. The conditions of the camp we visited that evening were the worst of all the camps that we visited on our trip. It was around five o'clock and most of the workers were still in the field but our youth and volunteers got a glimpse of the importance of our mission. We were there to show God's love to people who were 'hungry', 'thirsty', 'strangers', 'naked', 'sick', and in 'prison'. Later that evening a group of youth migrant workers, 12-16 year olds, who worked on the farm all day came over and we all played soccer as the sun set. Very fun! The next day, after sleeping on the floor of the Farmworker Ministry, we took the short drive to Fayetteville and visited the new exciting Airborne Museum. Since it was over 100 degrees outside, we wanted to make sure that we spent time in air-conditioning. The free museum offered a wonderful way to stay cool. Later that afternoon, we separated the clothes donated by size and prepare care packages for the migrant workers. Our youth

wrote on zip lock bags things like "With God's Love, From St. Andrew's" and "Jesus Loves You, From St. Andrew's." That evening we delivered a van load of clothes and care packages. One of the more powerful moments for all of us was seeing the excitement in the eyes of these people as they received these gifts of God's love. With our Mission now complete, the youth and volunteers have expressed how the experience broke open our hearts and helped us cross barriers. We will not see the food in our cabinets the same way as before. We will remember all of the hands that have gone into making it possible for us to eat that food and we will say a prayer for them. Blessings, Mark+

MUSIC NEWS
August is here and parents look towards the beginning of school-year activities. Your church staff does the same in forming our own education/participation/ministry year. I hope parents of children 5 and up will give some thought to musical/liturgical/participation options for young people. Our music offerings are learning in action activities. Young Singers is for Kingergarten/1st grade children who learn to use their voice and have the opportunity to share what theyve learned with our congregation a few times during the year as they are ready. We meet on Wednesday afternoons at 3pm for about 30minutes. Parents get acquainted in the process as the children sing. For older children, Junior Choristers meets Wednesday 3:45-4:45 and usually sings twice a month for our 9am service. They are THE CHOIR on those Sundays leading the liturgy in hymns and service music as well at singing an anthem or two on the own, sometimes at communion as well as the offertory. In so doing, they learn music of all periods and get a feel for the rhythm of the liturgical year. If a Thursday works better for some families, Im available to do a Thursday section as well. Im also interested in the possibility of a Jr. Choristers ALUMNI CHOIR??? We have some very talented Alumni out there. Some more chairs are definitely available in the Adult Choir and two more hands would be nice in our Bell Choir. REMEMBER, Time and Talent are two thirds of Stewardship. Richard Rhoads

If you would like to split that cost and share the dedication, only sign up for of the open Sunday spot in the sign-up book on The Table in the church. At the end of the month Gae Green, our flower coordinator, will send you a bill for your half of the flowers on behalf of the church. On Monday, volunteers from the Flower Ministry deliver the flowers to members who are in need of a thoughtful gift.

What did Monday nights from September to May for: Hugh MacRae, Galan Hobbs, John Furness, Adam Fiedler, Marrow Smith, Tom Craven, Bill McKenzie, Frank Ogden, Carol Milam, Ginny Woodruff and Frances Trask have in common with Tuesday mornings for: Florence Ellen Cowden, Adair Ellis, Danielle Glaze, Barbara Hajek, Nancy Keller, Lisa King, Judi Logan, Lyelle McMerty, Bill Sowers, Carolyn Wetherington, Rachel Pace and Laura Wells? CALLING ALL "LADIES OF THE EVENING!"

Are you interested in being part of a women's group at St. Andrew's that would primarily meet in the "after-hours? There are a number of us that are occupied during the days, and we would like to find out if there are other women at St. Andrew's who would like to get together on an occasional, but pre-planned, basis to enjoy each other's company. Gatherings or outings would take place primarily in the evening or weekends. The only membership requirements are that you be over 21 and looking to enjoy the company of other amazing women. I will first be collecting names and contact information and then we can decide what might be next depending on level and topics of interest. Activities could include social time, educational activities, travel opportunities, a simple walk on the beach, or just about anything else we might find enriching. This could be a wonderful way to meet new people and stay in touch with old friends! If you are interested or have questions or ideas, please give me a call and/ or send me a note. This is something I'm very interested in and would like to open to our parish community. I can be reached at 910-409-4740 or susan.herrmann77@gmail.com Blessings to you all! Susan Herrmann

TIME, TALENTS, AND TREASURE

"Come and See." The harvest of your time, talents, and treasure will be recognized here each month. MEET THE DAUGHTERS OF THE KING! Eloise Hines, Frances DeVane, Fran Shore, Betty Buck, Kathy Cormier, Linda Wyatt and Rachel Cobb took time out for a picture (which can be seen on the front cover) while on their way to a monthly meeting at the church office. Penny Brinkley, Sarah Beth Gay, Carolyn Wetherington and Nanci Weinstein are also members. The institution of Grace Chapter of the Daughters of the King was held at St. Andrew's on the Sound on December 11, 2005. Our own deacon, The Rev. Betty Buck, presented seven women for membership and they joined over 18,000 Daughters in the US and throughout the world. Membership is open to all women in our parish. The Daughters of the King is an order for women founded in 1885 by Margaret J. Franklin. Every Daughter pledges herself to a lifelong program of prayer, service and personal evangelism. Following the Rule of Prayer, a Daughter prays daily for the spread of Christ's Kingdom, for God's blessing upon members of the Order, and for the spiritual growth of her parish. Through the Rule of Service, Daughters vow to participate regularly in the worship, study and work of the church and to undertake a personal program of evangelism by bringing others to Christ and in addition to assist the clergy in whatever way possible for the spiritual growth of the parish. The emblem of the Order is a silver Greek cross which members wear at all times. Latin words inscribed on this cross translate "With lofty heart, mind and spirit uphold the cross." FHS at the base of the cross is a reminder that all is done "For His Sake." Look for these crosses in our congregation. Much gratitude should be showered on these women who so quietly continue their mission to pray and serve all in our parish. Many thanks to each of you! And thanks be to God!
