NOTICE

MANAGERS
It takes a village With summer in full effect, it seems like it is all about KIDS KIDS KIDS. Many mothers are wondering what to do with them and many fathers are praying for school to start again so that mom will return to her usual state of joy. The escape is to send them to the pool; Remember, before doing this it is important to instill in our children the rules of pool. Common courtesy and respect for others should be paramount. We are not seeing this in a some instances. Examples of this is; fully clothed teens using the pool, not showering before entering the pool or after using suntan oils and sunblock or not monitoring the actions of their guests. It takes a village if you see someone breaking the rules... mention it in a polite manner. This gentle reminder often times is enough to remind an offender that people are watching. There is no need for a ghetto scene or ghetto language, just a polite reminder. Special kudos to those residents that REFUSED to open the gate or allow access to the pool area on Friday afternoon (July 8 2011) to people that did not have a key AND were not residents of Spanish Ranch. These individuals were from outside the park. Please remind your guests that there is no long term parking on the street in the front of your homes. All guest parking is to be in your driveways or in Guest Parking areas. Resident parking is to be in your driveway. No resident parking is allowed in guest parking. If you notice any resident abusing the guest parking please help us help you by reporting the violators to the office. Our streets are pedestrian walkways and as such all pedestrians have the right of way.

CORNER

Our streets also need to be clear for emergency responders. All vehicles parked in the street are automatically subject to towing without prior notice or warning as all our streets are considered RED ZONES. This includes evenings, weekends and holidays. Guillermos Corner: Guillermo has been working very hard at keeping the sound wall at the entrance clear of the graffiti over the months. The small clubhouse has fallen victim to these tagging vandals. Guillermo says that enforcement is the key. Please feel free to call the Hayward Police by dialing their non emergency line (510.293.7000) and report anyone that you might see tagging the area. The rear gate has been damaged twice in the last 45 days. Once, someone drove into the keypad going out and another time it appears that someone purposefully broke the chain. Guillermo has been working on the street lights though out the park. If you notice a street light that is not working properly, please take note of its location and make the office aware. Jeff Stoops, SR1 Assistant Manager

Ward Creek Cleanup August 20, 2011 9 a.m. - noon

Meet at PACHECO STREET access to creek area (near back gate to the park).
Gloves, garbage bags, tools provided.

MANY THANKS to Yvonne, Brandi and the two others who joined Jeanie and Dawn for the June cleanup. With more people we managed to pick up the entire length of our area of responsibility and left it lookin good! A lot of graffiti had appeared, especially on the subdivision wall next to the walking path. Technically we arent responsible for that side of the creek, but we usually go after anything we can see to get the whole area spruced up. So willing graffiti painterouters are needed! If interested in helping, email Dawn at kdplaskon@ sbcglobal.net if you need information, or just show up!

Successful Collection for Tools for Schools

Tools for Schools is a function of the Salvation Army in partnership with the City of Hayward. They distribute backpacks full of school supplies to those in need, which includes children connected with disabled, elderly, lowincome or homeless families. This outreach is specifically for families in Hayward, Castro Valley or San Lorenzo. This community outreach was the designated charity for May, June and July chosen by the Spanish Ranch 1 Association. After we distributed a specific needs list, we got at least two of everything, and more. Disclosure: I admit to a last minute run to buy dictionaries and a couple of day planners, just so we could say that, but the response was great and the staff at the A Street location, where three boxes got dropped off, couldnt thank us enough. A special thank you to the Bingo people who brought donations and all park residents who participated! Safety TIPS To Consider

Night lights on your porch and driveway are a great and inexpensive deterrent to thefts and breakins. Try not to carry a purse, but if you do, carry it with the strap over a shoulder and the purse under your arm. or, with a long strap, over the opposite shoulder sash style. AND, never carry a purse in your hand at arms length, its an invitation for the grab and run guys, if they are walking OR just driving by. If you find yourself in that situation, LET GO, its not worth getting hurt or to have broken bones by holding on tight. If you are going to a bank to deposit money, NEVER carry a bank bag in the open, put it under your arm, and under your coat or sweater. Copy your car registration and Insurance Certificate (in reduced size) and put it in your wallet, NOT in the car glove box. If you are ever car-jacked they wont know where you live. When driving, its not a good idea to have your house keys on the same ring as your ignition and car keys. Please get in the habit of hitting the lock button on the drivers door as you enter your car.

Submitted by Jerry Higgins If you have any suspicion that you are being followed by another car, do not go directly to your home, in daylight drive into a store parking lot, and if that car is right there lean on the horn to get attention. If at night, drive to a well lighted area, like an open gas station and blow your horn. Other reminders: Calif. Vehicle Code: When using windshield wipers you MUST use Headlights! Please, drive SLOW in the park, thanks!

Bookshelves in the Main Clubhouse are available for the free exchange of books by park residents. Stop by and browse any time the clubhouse is open.

IMPORTANT NOTICE
The Tuesday and Thursday

SPECTRUM DINNERS have been suspended

while coordinators Denise West and Kraig Reed see if theres a way to comply with the Spectrum regulations and still serve our community.
Spectrum meals provide well-balanced nutrition, but many in our community found having to eat dinner at 4 p.m. just plain too early and were being allowed to take their meal to-go to reheat a couple hours later. Some picked up meals to take to elderly parents or friends. Others came to eat but wanted to take their leftovers home. An occasional regular would pop in to take a meal away because of a conflicting appointment. Spectrum has objected to providing take away meals or containers, but only a few participants were willing or able to commit to doing only sit-down dinners. Chilled or frozen dinners are available but they arent the same as the regular menu. Accordingly, the Senior Dinners have been discontinued for the time being while options are being explored. If you have any ideas or suggestions about what to do to help bring back this valuable program, please contact Denise West, 264-1428 or Kraig Reed, 556-2875.

Lloyd Robert La Rue

April 25, 1952 - June 10, 2011
Lloyd La Rue, 59, passed away peacefully of natural causes, at home, surrounded by the animals he loved. He had been a resident of SR1 since 1995 and was a common sight walking his two friendly dogs around the park. Born in Alameda, he was a fourth generation Californian. His ancestors settled in Boonville, California in the 1860s. After graduating in 1971 from Marina High School in San Leandro, he spent 4 years in the Air Force. He worked as an aircraft mechanic at the Naval Air Station in Alameda until its closure. Lloyd liked to travel, especially to Costa Rica. He loved to fish, camp and enjoyed water sports. He spent many days at the dog park in Fremont with his beloved Rebel and Rex. He was a sober member of Alcoholics Anonymous for more than 19 years. He is survived by his sister Linda Fluken Long (Bob), his nephews Andrew (Jamie) of Murietta, CA., Alex of Roseville, CA and his grand niece Hailey of Murietta, CA. A memorial service was held June 26, 2011 at the SR1 Clubhouse and he was interred at Sacramento Valley Veterans Cemetery, Dixon, CA.

Always a place for Miss Bea at Spectrum

Bea Welch, who died last month, had long been a supporter of the program. Miss Beas wit and charm will be deeply missed. She inspired and touched each of us to be our best, commented Denise West, while sadly announcing the hopefully temporary suspension of the dinners. Photo: Jeff Stoops

The 10 Commandments of Driving

Ten almost-forgotten tips for a more civilized commute.
1. Go easy on the horn. Use it only to alert others. Dont use lt to communicate your anger or express your frustration in a traffic jam. And refrain from showing your anger by gesturing. 2. Avoid driving in another cars blind spot. 3. Work on the merge. If you are merging Into traffic, use your turn signal and be patient. If someone is merging in front of you, allow them into the stream of traffic. 4. If a truck or vehicle is attempting to merge in front of you, flash your lights to let the driver know there is enough room to pull in. 5. Dont stop in a right-of-way. If you need to let a passenger out, pull into a parking space or around a comer, away from the busy thoroughfare. 6. Hold onto your door. Especially on windy days, be careful your door doesnt swing open and dent the car next to it. 7. Dont hog the left lane. its made for passing, not for cruising. And when you do pass, dont cruise; accelerate and got around the vehicle you are passing. 8. Dont blind the oncoming driver. Turn off your brights when you see a car approaching. 9. Stay back. Tailgating doesnt get you there any faster, and is one of the leading causes of rear-end accidents. 10. Concentrate. Be aware of others and their needs. If you have to take the lid off your coffee cup or answer a call on your cell phone or find a pack of gum in your purse, pull over. Refrain from texting while you are driving.

SCHOOL STARTS THIS MONTH!

Submitted by Spanish Ranch I Neighborhood Watch Group REPRINTED FROM JUNE 2010

Traffic Safety At Ruus School / Mucho Trfico

For some time, members of our Neighborhood Watch Group have observed that traffic on Tampa and Dickens at Ruus School has been extraordinarily heavy. As a result we regularly see: Cars double parked in both directions blocking traffic Children dropped in an unsafe manner, scrambling across the street mid-block between cars Adults dropping children off in the middle of the street Adults walking children across where there is no crosswalk We are very concerned about the possibility of a tragic accident and would like to help prevent that from happening if at all possible. Our Hayward Police Department has put out some excellent flyers about traffic laws for parents and guardians who drive children to school. The school Principal and a parent group are actively putting out flyers and taking other measures to try to help the situation when children are arriving and leaving school. For those of us that do have children to drop off or pick up, we certainly need to follow the rules, be patient and keep our children safe. For those of us that do not have children, it is advisable to avoid the area during problem hours! School Hours are as follows: 8:303:30 Monday, Tuesday, Thursday & Friday 8:301:00 Wednesday Kindergarten: 8:3012:00 and 10:002:05 Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday 8:3012:00 Wednesday Let's make an effort to keep children safe!

Association checking account records obtained by court order

When officers of Los Rancheros Association failed to hold the election of officers specified by the by-laws on April 1, 2010, a special-call meeting on May 6, 2010 seated new officers and board members. The previous officers refused to turn over association records or property to the new administration, and for the treasury, produced an envelope containing $3.71 in cash. New officers went to small claims court in an attempt to recover association materials. Since the few treasurers reports available for the period did not include specific transactions, and no records were provided, claimants felt that at the very least the settlement had to provide bank records of the closed account. (Small claims will only deal with money and not property.) Copies of the checks were eventually obtained and are listed exactly as imaged. No transactions after the payment to the Franchise Tax Board on 4/1/10 were authorized by the association. There is no credible Date 2010 1/10 1/26 1/26 1/28 1/28 2/28 3/15 3/22 3/24 3/25 3/25 3/25 3/22 4/1 4/15 5/3 4/19 4/19 5/3 5/3 ck # AMT record of disbursements. There are no minutes, no explanation in the memo line on the check, and no notarized statements to support supposed repayments of loans. Minutes of the SR1 Board Meeting 7/7/2011

Meetings of the elected Spanish Ranch I Executive Board are held on the first Thursday of each month at 7:00 p.m. in the main clubhouse. ALL residents are welcome to attend! The meeting was called to order by President Dawn Plaskon at 7:05 p.m. All officers and board members were present except Kathi Calvert. Several residents attended. Since the El Toros had not yet arrived, Secretary Jeanie Schultz read the minutes of the previous meeting and they were approved with the correction that Jerry Higgins absence was excused. Treasurers Report: Peggy Nichols reported no activity this month and the balance remains the same at $859.93. Arrangements were made to turn over the Treasurers book to Jeanie in order to complete the audit of the finances from 2008 to present. Helping Hand received several calls, some from people previously helped. Since its just one guy trying to help out at the moment, free help is limited to those truly in need and those with the ability to pay are being advised of hourly rates. Disaster: More discussion about drafting a plan for the park despite the fact that management has not supplied the promised park disaster plan. It was decided to have a table at National Night Out with disaster information. The table will include copies of the Emergency information form distributed some years back that then wasnt turned over to NERT because of privacy concerns. People filling out these forms would receive a gift of a first aid kit and the forms would then be kept on file by NERT or the Assn Disaster Committee. It was decided to call a meeting for sometime soon after National Night Out to get input from residents on what a park disaster plan should include and to dispense specific information about what to do for various scenarios. Jeanie will prepare a flyer, find the emergency info form used before and compile NERT information to be added to the Welcome packet. Welcoming: Judy assembled more packets at the request of management and dropped them off at the office. El Toro: The publication was delivered more than a week late again with no explanation from the publisher. Old Business: A list of specific needs for Tools for Schools was obtained from the Salvation Army which were posted, and lists made available The Tools for Schools charity drive has collected a substantial amount of donations. Bingo attendees donated for the effort, and it would appear most of the rest came from board members but all donations are greatly appreciated. The discussion from last month about the general lack of response from management was reviewed. Tall weeds in yards and homes generally unkempt in appearance were mentioned but concerns were generally dismissed if those concerned are not willing to fill out a complaint form. It was suggested that a complaint about specific addresses could be made citing the overall devaluation of an individuals property if the surrounding area is not kept up. New Business: Barbara Sacks got an information request from a resident while on vacation that she accidently deleted, so is hoping the individual will get in touch. A resident brought to the attention of the group that a replacement tree, planted in place of one that was cut down by the park, is dead, and wondered what sort of followup is in place. It was suggested that the individual file a suggestion with management especially in view of all the new trees that have been planted following the latest round of cutting and trimming. The meeting was adjourned at 8:20 p.m. Respectfully submitted, Jeanie Schultz, Secretary
