On behalf of the members of the Texas Spring Cypress Chapter of the Links, it is my great pleasure to welcome you to our first Links Chapeaus & Polo Fundraiser. We are honored that you have chosen to join us as we continue our mission to provide educational support for children in our most underserved communities. Our chapter is representative of the more than 12,000 members of The Links, Incorporated around the globe, who for more than 65 years, have been committed to enriching, sustaining and ensuring the culture and economic survival of African American families. While the venue and theme of our fundraiser have changed, the focus remains the same, increasing the potential of success for some of our most at-risk youth. Your presence today provides educational enrichment programs as well as college scholarships for these students. I would like to express my sincere thanks to Josie Daniels, Event Chair, Nyanza Moore, Co-Chair, and all the members of the Ways and Means Committee for bringing us this exceptional event. This hard working committee promised us an event that would be unique, inviting and fun. They have certainly delivered on that promise. If I may borrow a phrase from Shirley Chisholm, a very wise and giving woman, "Service is the rent we pay for the privilege of living on this earth." Thank you, Houston, for your generosity. Thank you for joining us in making that payment of Service. It could not have been done without you! Enjoy the day of Links Chapeaus & Polo. Warmest regards,

Angela Veale Joubert, President

Chapter History
In early 1990, the Chapter Establishment Officer of The Links, Incorporated extended the invitation to the three local chapters to submit names for the purpose of establishing a new chapter in Houston, Texas. Twenty-four ladies comprised the interest group that attended the initial meeting on February 27, 1990 at the home of Link Drucie Chase. Link Edwina Higgins, Western Area Director, presided over the meeting with input from the representatives of the three chapters. The second meeting was held on March 19, 1990. One of the most important decisions made at the meeting was the selection of the Acres Homes community as the program target area for Suburban Houston Women. Shortly after that meeting, seven additional ladies joined the organization. Since that time, a variety of dynamic, effective, and meaningful programs have been developed and implemented in the Acres Homes community. The programs are consistent with the five program facets of The Links, Incorporated: The Arts, International Trends and Services, National Trends and Services, Services to Youth, and Health and Human Services. In keeping with the goals developed by the Suburban Houston Women and the program facets of The Links, Incorporated, two groups from the Acres Homes community were immediately targeted for the programs of the Suburban Houston Women. These two groups were the youth at M. C. Williams Middle School and the seniors from the Acres Homes Multi-Service Center. These and many other programs represent the history and the commitment to service inherent in the philosophy of the Suburban Houston Women. As a result, early in December 1994, Suburban Houston Women received official notification to become Texas Spring Cypress Chapter-elect of The Links, Incorporated. The name Spring Cypress was appropriately chosen because Spring Cypress suggests expansion, viability, continuity, and growth. The Texas Spring Cypress Chapter was chartered on March 11, 1995.

Provide positive reinforcement promoting self-worth, self-esteem and high values and morals. Expose young females to a variety of cultural experiences. Enhance parental involvement in the lives and activities of our JEWELS.

African-American Polo Comes of Age

*
Cowtown Work to Ride quietly made polo history In March 2011 when it became the first all African-American team to win a national title in the sport. At the National Interscholastic Championship at the Virginia Polo center, the team took home the gold after beating out the crew from Baltimore. Cowtown/WTR, which entered the tournament as the second seed, includes brothers Kareem Rosser, 18, and Daymar Rosser, 16, of West Philadelphia, and Brandon Rease, 15, of North Philadelphia. [Coach Leslie] Hiner said Cowtown/ WTR broke to an early lead against Baltimore. The team did the same thing in a 24-8 victory over Midland (Texas) in the semifinals. Polo teRmS BumP A player is permitted to ride into another player to spoil his shot. The angle of collision must be slight, causing no more than a jar. The faster the horse travels, the smaller the angle must be. A good bump can shake your dentures loose. chukkeR Also called a period. There are 6 chukkers in a polo game, each lasting 7 minutes. A horn is to sound when 30 second remain in the chukker, and again at the end of the period when the Umpire is to blow his whistle. flaggeR/goal JuDge A person who observes the goal area and signals whether the goal is good or not by waving a flag over the head if a goal is scored, or under the waist if no goal has been made. goal When a ball crosses completely over the line between the goal posts, it is considered a goal regardless of who (including ponies) knocks it through. It must also be completely within the inner vertical line of the goal post. To equalize wind and turf conditions, teams change sides after every scored goal.
