Die portugiesische Gemeinde Vale de Cambra ist ein Straßen-
dorf 40 km südöstlich von Porto. Inmitten der verstreut liegen-
den Häuser und Hallen mit roten Dächern aus Blech oder Z ­ iegel
wirken die sechs neuen Pultdächer aus Beton wie ein eigenes,
monolithisch graues Dorf aus freistehenden Häusern auf einem
Sockel für einen Supermarkt, Restaurants oder Büros. Durch
den hohen Vorfertigungsgrad konnten die Ziele des Bauherrn,
niedrige Baukosten und eine kurze Bauzeit, eingehalten wer-
den. Die intensive Zusammenarbeit der Architekten mit der orts-
ansässigen Betonfirma hat sich kostenmäßig ausgezahlt: Die
sechs Häuser mit je 45 m2 Wohnfläche und der Unterbau mit
640 m2 Gewerbefläche kosteten gerade einmal 750 000 Euro,
nach Schätzung der Architekten 30 % weniger als in konventio-
neller Bauweise. Trotz Problemen auf der Baustelle wurden
sämtliche 30 Module in nur sechs Wochen aufgestellt. Nach
sechs Monaten waren die Wohnungen bezugsfertig.
The Portuguese village community of Vale de Cambra is located
40 km southeast of Porto. Surrounded by dispersed houses and
halls with red sheet metal or tile covered roofs, the six new con-
crete shed roof structures seem like their own village, monolithi-
cally grey, composed of free standing houses on top of a pedes-
tal containing a supermarket, restaurants or offices. Due to the
high degree of prefabrication, the client’s goals – keeping con-
struction costs low and construction time short – were achieved.
The intensive collaboration between the architects and a local
concrete producer was rewarding in financial terms: The six
houses, each covering 45 m2 of residential area and the structure
below, comprising 640 m2 of commercial area, cost only 750 000
euro. According to the architects’ estimates, this is 30 % less than
in the case of conventional construction. Despite problems on the
building site, all 30 modules were erected in only six weeks. Six
months later, the apartments were ready for occupation.

Die leicht verdrehten, vor- und zurückspringenden Wohneinhei-
ten bilden einen wohltuenden Orientierungspunkt entlang der
Landstraße, an der sich ein Dorf ohne deutliche Abgrenzung an
das nächste reiht. Vor allem in der Dämmerung und bei Dunkel-
heit lockt das 32 m lange leuchtende Schaufenster des Super-
markts und der Bäckerei viele Kunden an, die sonst durch Vale
de Cambra durchgefahren wären.
Summary Architekten wurden mit der Planung beauftragt,
da sie auf der Architekturbiennale Venedig 2016 mit dem Pilot-
projekt ihres neuen Bausystems Gomos international Aufmerk-
samkeit erregten. Gomos, was so viel heißt wie Schnitze einer
Zitrusfrucht, besteht aus kantigen Betonröhren, die untereinander
wie die Rohrsegmente im Kanalbau über Nut-und-Feder-Fugen
ineinander gesteckt und dauerelastisch abgedichtet werden.
In Vale de Cambra wurde zunächst der Sockelbau aus
Stützen und 30 cm dicken vorgefertigten Sandwichelementen

through a string of villages devoid of any clear separation. Most
of all at dawn and at night, the 32 m long illuminated windows of
the supermarket and the bakery attract many customers that
would otherwise simply pass through Vale de Cambra.
Summary Architects were commissioned to design the pro-
ject, based on the international recognition their contribution to
the 2016 Venice Biennale of Architecture garnered, a pilot project
for Gomos, their new construction system. Gomos means seg-
ment or slice of a citrus fruit. The system consists of angular
concrete tubes that permit interlocking connections, similar to
the tube segments used in canal construction, with tongue-and-
groove joints and permanently elastic seals.
In Vale de Cambra, the first step was to build the base
­structure with its columns and 30 cm thick prefabricated sandwich

mit Kerndämmung im Format 3,30 m × 2,35 m auf der Boden-
platte aus Ortbeton aufgerichtet. Auf die ausbetonierten Fili­
gran­decken sind die 8,23 m langen, 5,40 m breiten und bis zu
4,40 m hohen Pultdachhäuser aufgelegt. Sie sind in je drei
Raummodule mit 2,35 m Länge und ein Balkonmodul mit
1,18 m Länge aufgeteilt. Drei der vier Segmente sind wie kan-
tige Röhren hohl ausgebildet. Beim Abschlusselement auf der
Bergseite der Häuser wurden Wände, Dach und Boden bereits
im Werk mit der die Eingangsfassade und der anschließenden
Nasszelle verbunden.
Die rohen Betonoberflächen der Wände und Decken
sowie die Segmentfugen bleiben sichtbar. Der Innenausbau aus
leichten Trennwänden und Schiebewänden zwischen Wohn-,
Schlafzimmer und Bad wurde bereits im Werk vormontiert.
Der Aufbau der Küchenzeilen und beweglichen Möbel erfolgte
erst vor Ort. Vom Werk zum Bauplatz sind es nur 5 km, der
CO2 -Fußabdruck für Materialtransport ist im Vergleich zu ande-
ren Projekten aus Beton-Raummodulen vergleichsweise gering.
Die gestalterische Auflockerung durch das Auseinanderrücken
der Einheiten schafft individuelle Hauseingänge. Sie bedeutet
keine Platzverschwendung, da die zulässige Nutzfläche kom-
plett ausgeschöpft ist. Außerdem ist durch den Abstand eine
effektive akustische Trennung garantiert. Dafür sind mit dem
Gomos-System doppelt so viele Wände erforderlich, wie bei
einer Schottenkonstruktion. Das schlägt sich in einem größeren
Ressourcenverbrauch nieder. FK

elements including core insulation and measuring 3.30 m × 2.35 m
on top of an in-situ concrete floor slab. The 8.23 m long, 5.40 m
wide and up to 4.40 m tall shed roof houses were placed on top of
a filigree ceiling with in-situ top layer. Each comprises three room
modules with a length of 2.35 m and 1.18 m deep balcony module.
Three of the four segments are hollow, resembling angular tubes.
For the parts of the houses facing the mountains, walls, roof and
floors were connected to the entrance facade and the successive
sanitary room segments in the workshop.
The rough concrete surfaces of the walls and ceilings
remain visible, as well as the element joints. Interior finishes,
including lightweight partition walls and sliding wall elements
between living room, bedroom and bathroom were already
installed in the workshop. The assembly of kitchen units and
movable furniture took place on-site. With a distance between
workshop and construction site of only 5 km, the carbon footprint
for material transport is relatively low, compared to other projects
utilising concrete room modules.
Design-based variations created by shifting the positions of
units result in individualised entrances to houses. They are not
considered a waste of space, since the permitted usable area is
already fully exploited. In addition, the separations between
houses lead to effective soundproofing. To achieve this, the
Gomos system requires twice as many walls as a typical parallel
shear wall construction type. This, however, leads to greater
