Nicht immer ist die Nutzung eines Gebäudes von außen ables-
bar. Besonders groß ist die Überraschung allerdings, wenn sich
hinter einer sakralen Gebäudehülle Wohnraum verbirgt. Die
1866 im neugotischen Stil erbaute Christchurch im Londoner
Stadtbezirk Brent wurde bereits in den späten 1980er-Jahren
auf einer Teilfläche umgenutzt. Seither beherbergt das Lang-
haus 14 Wohneinheiten mit Einzelgrößen von rund 50 m², ver-
teilt auf zwei Ebenen. Im verbleibenden Kirchenraum finden
weiterhin Gottesdienste statt.
Als die nach Südwesten orientierte ebenerdige Wohnein-
heit Nr. 4 zum Verkauf stand, war sie in einem sehr schlechten

The function of a building isn’t always made obvious by its
­exterior. The surprise is particularly big when a sacred building
conceals a home hidden behind its facade. Christ Church was
built in 1866 in the Gothic Revival style in the London Borough
of Brent. Parts of it had already been repurposed in the late
1980s. Since then the nave has accommodated 14 housing
units covering about 50 m² each and distributed across two
­levels. The remaining interior of the church continues to offer a
space for worship.
When the ground floor housing unit No. 4, oriented
towards the southwest, was offered for sale, it was also in a

Zustand. Trotzdem verliebten sich die neuen Eigentümer, ein
Rentnerpaar aus den Vereinigten Staaten, sofort in das aus­
gefallene Wohnobjekt. Sie beauftragten das junge britisch-
kanadische Büro SUPRBLK Studio mit der Sanierung und
Umgestaltung in eine Ferienwohnung für sich selbst und wei-
tere Familienmitglieder.
Die beiden Bürogründer Sara L’Espérance und Michael
Putman beschlossen, die bestehenden sakralen Attribute
gestalterisch wirksam zu reaktivieren und sie harmonisch mit
neuen, klar ablesbaren Einbauten zu kombinieren. Die Kirchen-
fenster wurden instand gesetzt, die umlaufenden Sandstein­
einfassungen von Schimmel befreit. Die Wohnfläche ist als flie-
ßende Raumfolge organisiert, die sich um eine Schrankwand
aus Furniersperrholz mit integrierter Schiebetür und Home-
Entertainment-System entwickelt. Dadurch verschwindet auch
das einzig verbleibende, statisch notwendige Stück Wand aus
very bad condition. Nevertheless the new owners, a retired
­couple from the United States, immediately fell in love with the
unusual residential property. The couple tasked the young
British-Canadian office SUPRBLK Studio with renovating and
redesigning the unit into a holiday home for themselves and

other family members.
The two office founders, Sara L’Espérance and Michael
Putman, decided to effectively

of the sacred architecture by means of design and harmoniously
combine them with new and clearly identifiable inbuilt elements.
The church windows were repaired and mould was removed
from the sandstone borders that encircle them. The living
space is now organized as a flowing spatial continuum that
revolves around a veneer plywood

ing door and home entertainment system. This also allows the
only remaining existing partial wall, required due to structural

dem Blickfeld. Die 2,40 m hohen Furniersperrholzpaneele aus
matt lackierter Birke ziehen sich durch die gesamte Wohnung
und geben dem hohen Raum ein menschliches Maß. Den darü-
ber liegenden Bereich bezeichnen die Architekten als „himmli-
sche Welt“. Hier integrieren sie eine winzige Schlafgalerie, die
sich hinter Sichtschutzlamellen verbirgt.
Die Farbpalette des Innenraums ist von den cremefarbe-
nen Sandsteinsäulen inspiriert, die nun freigestellt sind und pro-
minent auf die ursprüngliche Nutzung verweisen. Einen heiteren
Kontrapunkt setzt das zarte Gelbgrün der hochformatigen Tür-
elemente. Schräge Deckenlaibungen nehmen diesen Farbton
auf und reflektieren das einfallende Sonnenlicht. Ein subtiles
Rautenmuster aus Messingintarsien durchzieht das lichte Grau
der durchgehend verlegten Zementfliesen und zitiert die Geo-
metrie des ursprünglichen Kirchenraums. PP

selves throughout the apartment, thus giving the tall space a
sense of human scale. The area above is described by the archi-
tects as “heavenly world”. Here, they integrated a tiny sleeping
berth that is visually obscured by a screen of slats.
The colour palette of the interior space is inspired by the
cream hued sandstone columns that are now exposed and
prominently point out the original function of the building. The
tall door elements with their yellow-green surfaces constitute a
cheerful counterpoint. Inclined soffits adopt their colour and
reflect the daylight that enters the apartment. A subtle rhomboid
pattern comprised of brass inlays pervades the light grey of the
continuous cement tile flooring and cites the geometry of the
original church interior. PP
