Da sein altes Studio für die Herstellung großformatiger Skulptu-
ren zu klein war, ließ sich der Maler und Bildhauer Stief Desmet
ein neues Atelier errichten. Es liegt auf dem hinteren Teil seines
ländlichen Grundstücks in Ostflandern und bildet gemeinsam
mit Wohnhaus, Stall und dem alten Atelier ein stimmiges
Gebäudeensemble.
Der Neubau ist als zweigeschossiger Kubus konzipiert, der
seitlich von zwei niedrigeren Anbauten flankiert wird, in dem
sich Büro und Küche befinden. Die Differenzierung von Haupt-
und Nebenräumen wird nicht nur in der Höhe sichtbar, sondern
auch im Material: Während die beiden eingeschossigen Gebäu-
deteile mit Betonsteinen verkleidet sind, hat der Hauptbaukör-
per eine Fassade aus hellroten Ziegeln, die eine Verbindung zu
den Bestandsgebäuden herstellen. Die kleinteilige Struktur und
unregelmäßige Farbgebung der Vormauerziegel stehen im Kon-
trast zu der klaren, einfachen Gebäudeform. Auch innen setzt

Since his old studio was too small for the creation of large-
scale sculptures, the painter and sculptor Stief Desmet had
a new ­studio built for himself. Sited on the rear of his rural
­property in East Flanders, it is an element of a coherent
­building ensemble together with the adjacent house, barn
and old studio.
The new building was conceived as a two-storey
cube flanked by two additions of lower height that house
office and kitchen. The differentiation of main and auxiliary
rooms is not only indicated by the building height but
also by the material selection: The two single-storey build-
ing parts are clad in ­concrete block. The main building
­volume features a facade made of light red brick that estab-
lishes a connection to the existing buildings on site. The
­small-scale structure and ­irregular colouring of the brickface
contrasts with the clear and simple building form. The

sich die unterschiedliche Materialität fort: Während die Innen-
wände der Nebenräume mit Sperrholz verkleidet sind, hat das
Atelier eine innere Schale aus weiß gestrichenen Hochloch­ 1
ziegeln. Gemeinsam mit dem nackten Estrichboden und der
unverputzten Decke verleihen sie dem Raum eine rohe
An­mutung.
In den schlichten Mauerwerksfassaden sind die Fenster

präzise gesetzt und reagieren auf verschiedene Anforderungen.

The insides of the auxiliary rooms are clad in plywood.
The ­studio received interior walls made of vertically perfo-
rated brick with white paint finish. Together with the raw
screed floor and the unrendered ceiling, the room offers a
rough visual impression.
The simple brick facades feature precisely set windows
that respond to various requirements. Two roughly 3.50 m
tall french doors allow moving large sculptures inside and
­outside the building. A corner window in the studio and a
­window in the office provide views of the landscape. Two

lich bringen zwei Oberlichter gleichmäßig gestreutes Licht in
den Hauptraum. Die Sichtbetonstürze über Fenstern und Türen
bilden markante Akzente in den gemauerten Wandflächen. Sie
korrespondieren mit dem Sockel aus Beton, der sich innen als
Sitz- und Ablagefläche im Atelierraum fortsetzt. Zwei der Beton-
stürze dienen zudem als Auflager für den Stahlträger, der sicht-
bar unterhalb der Decke verläuft. Mit wenigen Materialien und
einfachen Details haben die Architekten einen selbstbewussten
Neubau geschaffen, der durch seine klare Formensprache
besticht und sich dennoch wie selbstverständlich in die
Um­gebung einfügt. JL

The exposed concrete lintels above the windows and doors
create striking accents within the masonry wall surfaces. They
correspond to the concrete pedestal that is continued within
the interiors where it is used as a sitting and ­storage surface
for the studio. Two of the ­concrete lintels also serve as support
for the steel beam that visibly runs underneath the ceiling. The
architects employed a limited material selection and simple
details to create a self-confident expression for the building. Its
clear language of forms is remarkable. At the same time it fits
into its surrounding in a rather natural way. JL
