Die Korkeichen im Waldgebiet der Costa Brava dienten früher
der Herstellung von Sektkorken, inzwischen konzentriert sich die
Produktion von Korkprodukten auf Portugal und Südspanien.
Aber auch heute noch können Besucher im Museum von
Palafrugell und in einer stillgelegten Fabrik Abbau und Verarbei-
tung der Baumrinden in der Region nachvollziehen. Das Material
wird in der Architektur meistens eher als Dämmstoff eingesetzt,
aber bei den beiden Baukörpern im dichten Eichen- und Pinien-
wald an der katalanischen Küste erfüllen die Platten eine dop-
pelte Funktion als Außendämmung und Fassadenverkleidung.
In earlier times bark from the cork oaks in the wooded regions of
the Costa Brava was used to make corks for sparkling wines,
but today the manufacture of cork products is concentrated in
Portugal and southern Spain. In the Palafrugell museum and in a
disused factory, however, visitors can still study the extraction
and processing of cork bark in the region. In architecture the
material is mostly used as insulating material, but the panels
featured in the two buildings in the dense cork and pine woods
on the Catalonian coast have a twin function: they are both
external insulation and facade cladding. A 40 mm-thick layer of

Eine 40 mm starke Korklage wurde auf die Holzkonstruktion der
Häuser geschraubt und mit Kalkmörtel eine weitere Lage von
50 mm aufgeklebt.
Die zwei Häuser, in der drei Generationen einer Familie ihre
Ferien verbringen, sind als hohe, schlanke Baukörper konzipiert,
die sich in Proportion und Materialität der Umgebung anpassen.
Das kleinere Gebäude ist auf einer Seite in den Hang gescho-
ben, auf der anderen auf Betonstützen gestellt und der Grund-
riss ist als Splitlevel organisiert. Vor dem größeren Haus bieten
zwei geräumige Terrassen einen Ausblick auf die etwa 500 m

mortar was then used to fix a further 50 mm-thick layer in place.
The two buildings, in which the three generations of a
­family spend their holidays, are conceived as tall, slender vol-
umes adapted in terms of proportions and materiality to their
surroundings. On one side the smaller building is slid into the
slope, on the other it rests on concrete columns and the floor
plan is organized as a split-level. Two spacious terraces in
front of the larger house offer a view of the coastline about

entfernte Küste. Terrassen, Stützen und erdberührende Wände
sind in Stahlbeton ausgeführt, auf dem Sockel ruht die massive
Brettsperrholzkonstruktion mit der Korkfassade. Diese homo-
gene Hülle zieht sich über Wände, Vorbauten mit Fensterni-
schen und die Klappläden der Eingangstüren im Erdgeschoss.
Ähnlich einheitliche Oberflächen schufen die Architekten im
Innenbereich. Hier dominiert das Pinienholz der sichtbar belas-
senen Tragkonstruktion in unterschiedlichen Dimensionen. Aus
dem Naturmaterial sind nicht nur die Wände und Decken gefer-
tigt, sondern auch Treppen und Möbel. Einige Fenster aus dem
gleichen Holz ragen wie Erker aus der Fassade und lassen im
Innenraum Sitznischen oder kleine Arbeitsflächen entstehen.
Zur Belüftung können die Fenster nach oben geschoben oder
geklappt werden. Die Böden bedecken Fliesen eines ortsansäs-
sigen Herstellers in einem zurückhaltenden grauen Farbton. SD

with the ground are made of reinforced concrete, the solid cross
laminated timber construction with cork facade rests on the
plinth. The homogeneous cork shell extends across the walls,
the porches with window niches and the shutters to the entrance
doors at ground floor level.
In the interior the architects achieved a similar uniformity
of surfaces. Here pine in different dimensions dominates the
exposed loadbearing structure. Not only the walls and floor
slabs are made from this natural material but also the stairs and
the furniture. A number of windows made from the same wood
project like bay windows from the facade, creating seating
niches or small work areas in the interior. For ventilation the
­windows can be slid upwards or tilted outwards. The floors
are covered in tiles in a restrained shade of grey that came from
a local ­producer. SD
