Die dünn besiedelte Region Alentejo südlich von Lissabon gilt
traditionell als Armenhaus Portugals. In jüngerer Zeit jedoch
lockt sie zunehmend Hauptstadtbewohner an, die dem Groß­
stadtstress und den Touristenströmen entfliehen wollen. Auch
das Haus, das Atelier Data bei Cercal unweit der Atlantikküste
errichtet haben, dient einer vierköpfigen Familie als Wochenend­
residenz. Mit seinen weiß verputzten Fassaden und dem flach
geneigten, mit Mönch-und-Nonne-Ziegeln gedeckten Dach
­entspricht der Neubau regionaltypischen Bautraditionen. Die
Symmetrie des Baukörpers, die Fensterlosigkeit der Außen­
mauern und vier ummauerte Patios an den Gebäudeecken
geben das Haus jedoch als zeitgenössischen Architektenentwurf

The thinly settled region of the Alentejo, south of Lisbon, was
traditionally regarded as one of the poorest parts of Portugal. In
recent times, however, it is attracting more and more citizens
from the capital, people who wish to escape the stress of the
city and the streams of tourists. The present house, built by
Atelier Data near Cercal, not far from the Atlantic coast, serves a
family of four as a weekend residence. With its white-rendered
facades and flat-pitched roof with pantiles, the new structure
­follows building traditions typical of the region. The symmetrical
form of the house, the absence of windows in the outer walls,
and the four enclosed patios at the corners of the structure lend
it a contemporary architectural appearance. The courtyards,
open to the exterior, serve as outdoor showers and sources of

und zum anderen als Licht- und Frischluftquelle für die Innen­
räume. Drei Schlafzimmer – eines für die Eltern, eines für Gäste
und ein ­drittes mit Stockbetten für die Kinder und ihre Freunde –
umgeben U-förmig den Gemeinschaftsbereich mit Küche und
Wohnraum.
Davor öffnet sich eine überdachte Veranda zu einem mit
Regen- und Quellwasser gespeisten Swimmingpool. Zwei Schie­
bewände – eine verglaste zwischen Wohnraum und Veranda
und eine aus weißen Holzpaneelen zwischen Veranda und Frei­
terrasse – erlauben abgestufte Übergänge zwischen Innen- und
Außenraum. Die Glasschiebeelemente dienen als K ­ limahülle, die
Holztore vor allem als Sicht- und ­Einbruchsschutz. Eine direkte
Zufahrt zum Haus gibt es nicht; die Autos bleiben mehrere

In front of these, a covered veranda opens on to a swim-
ming pool fed with rainwater and natural spring water. Two slid-
ing partitions – a glazed one between the living area and the
veranda and one consisting of white timber panels between the
veranda and the open terrace – allow a gradual transition
between inside and outside. The glass elements form a climatic
envelope, while the wooden panels act above all as a visual
screen and a barrier to prevent housebreaking. There is no

böden liegt Ziegelpflaster, die Deckenverkleidungen bestehen
aus Schilfrohr und das Tor zum Eingangshof ist in einem kräfti­
gen Blau gestrichen, das in der Region als Sockelanstrich und
für Fensterumrahmungen h ­ äufig verwendet wird. Es ist nahezu
der einzige Farbakzent im monochromen Weiß, das sich über
den hölzernen Dachstuhl und die Deckenverkleidungen ebenso
erstreckt wie über die Schrankfront an der Küchenrückwand,
in die nahezu unsichtbar die Durchgänge in die Kinderschlaf­
zimmer integriert sind.  JS

Constructionally, too, the new house is indebted to regional
traditions. The outer walls, buried in part in the slope of the site,
and the internal load-bearing skeleton frame, consist of rein-
forced concrete. Between the two, the architects inserted walls
of rammed earth and clay bricks in the manner frequently found
in the Alentejo. The flooring is in clay tiles, while the soffit clad-
ding consists of reed lathing. The gate to the entrance courtyard
is painted in a strong blue colour commonly used in the region
for plinths and window surrounds. This is virtually the sole colour
accent in the monochrome white that extends over the timber
roof structure and soffit cladding, as well as the cupboard front
to the rear wall of the kitchen, where the points of access to the
children's bedroom are integrated almost unnoticed.  JS
