Ein weit ausladendes Dach aus Holzrosten prägt das Einfamilien-
haus, das sich in die Hügellandschaft am Rand der Hafenstadt
Geelong schmiegt. Das 90 km südwestlich von Melbourne lie-
gende Gebäude ist südseitig durch den Hang und im Westen
durch eine bestehende Pinienreihe vor kalten Südwestwinden
geschützt. Gleichzeitig erlaubt die Ausrichtung nach Norden, auf
der Südhalbkugel die Sonnenseite, den freien Blick ins Tal.
Karge, weitläufige Acker- und Weidelandparzellen umgeben das
für australische Verhältnisse bescheidene Grundstück von 25 ha.
Neben der Positionierung des Gebäudes spielt die Ver-
schattung eine essentielle Rolle, da die Temperaturen in den
­heißen, trockenen Sommern auf bis zu 45 °C klettern. Die Heu-
scheunen der Umgebung, einfache Flachdächer auf Stahl­
stützen, inspirierten den Architekten zu einem autonomen
­Sonnendach. Darunter stehen zwei Wohnmodule, die L-förmig
Nestling in the gently rolling landscape around the port of
Geelong, Australia, this single-family house is distinguished by
its broadly cantilevered timber-grid roof. The building, 90 km
south-west of Melbourne, is shielded from the cool south-west
winds by the slope of the ground to the south and by an existing
row of pine trees to the west. At the same time, the orientation of
the house to the north in the southern hemisphere means a
sunny aspect with an open view into the valley. The 25-hectare
site – modest for Australian circumstances – is surrounded by
extensive plots of bare arable and pasture land.
In addition to the location of the building, shading plays a
vital role, since temperatures of up to 45 °C can be reached in
the hot, dry summers. The hay barns in the area, with simple
flat roofs supported by steel columns, inspired the architects in
their design of an autonomous sunshading roof for the house.

nur das Haus, auch die Freibereiche liegen dank der 36 × 39 m
großen Pergola im Schatten. Sie ist aus 156 jeweils 3 × 3 m gro-
ßen Elementen zusammengesetzt und besteht aus Stahlrahmen,
in denen Latten aus lokalem Eukalyptusholz liegen, eine von drei
in Australien zugelassenen buschfeuerresistenten Holzarten.
Zwanzig Dachelemente sind als Luken konzipiert. Sie lagern auf
Gasdruckfedern und können teils nach Norden, teils nach Süden
manuell geöffnet werden. So bremsen sie den vom Hang kom-
menden Südwind ab und lassen zudem spannende Lichtspiele
entstehen, wenn Sonnenlicht ins Innere fällt.
Talseitig ist das Gebäude vollverglast, während die Wände
an der Hangseite aus gedämmten Holzrahmen mit Zementfaser-
platten bestehen. Das Dach ist aus Furnierschichtholzbindern
heimischer Pinienhölzer gefertigt und mit Stahlprofilblechen

were inserted – not only the structure, but also many outdoor
areas enjoy shade. Eucalyptus is one of three bush-fire-resistant
types of wood admitted for use in Australia. Some 20 modules
were designed as hatches and are bedded on gas-pressure
struts. They can be opened partially by hand to the north and
south, thus breaking the southern wind that descends from the
slope and giving rise to a fascinating play of sunlight when it
falls into the interior.
On the valley side, the house is fully glazed, whereas the
walls facing the slope consist of insulated timber frames with
cement-fibre panels. The ceiling of laminated timber trusses

gedeckt. Im Innenausbau spiegelt sich die äußere kühle Schlicht-
heit wider. Sowohl die Betonfliesen auf der Terrasse als auch die
grau lackierten Zementfaserplatten für die raumhohen Einbau-
schränke setzen sich hier fort. Dazu bilden die Sperrholzober­
fläche des Küchenblocks und die offene Holzdecke einen war-
men Kontrast. Eine Fußbodenheizung und ein Dauerbrandofen
im Wohnzimmer sorgen für Wärme.
Die Wasserversorgung speist sich ausschließlich über
Regenwasser, das in zwei oberirdischen 100 000-Liter-Tanks
gesammelt wird. In einem unterirdischen 5000-Liter-Tank wird
das Abwasser gereinigt und zur Bewässerung des Grundstücks
genutzt. Das Haus ist an das öffentliche Stromnetz angeschlos-
sen, zwölf Photovoltaik-Paneele auf dem Dach einer alten
Scheune, die auch auf dem Grundstück liegt, liefern zusätzli-
chen  Strom.    FLK

section metal sheeting. The cool simplicity of the exterior is
reflected internally. The concrete paving tiles to the terrace as
well as the grey-painted cement-fibreboard panels to the room-
height inbuilt cupboards are continued here. Plywood surfaces
to the kitchen block and the exposed timber soffit ensure a
warm contrast to this. Underfloor heating and a slow-combustion
stove in the living room provide warmth for the interior.
The water supply for the house is derived exclusively from
rainwater, which is stored in two above-ground 100,000-litre
tanks. Waste water, collected in a 5,000-litre underground tank,
is purified and used for irrigation.
The house is connected to the public power grid. Twelve
photovoltaic panels on the roof of an old barn on the site supply
