I have more than 16 years of interdisciplinary R&D experience (including 3+ yrs. of industrial experience) in the area of Investigation of nanoscale optical, electrical and mechanical properties of functional nanomaterials that are fundamentally interesting for sensing and device applications; their synthesis, patterning, assembly and integration with micro scale devices. Micro/ Nano Sensors (based on Resistive, Capacitive, Field Effect Transistor, MEMS and their hybridization as a method of signal transduction) and Integrated System for Chemical and Biological Sensing, IR Detection, and nano-Actuation and Imaging Advanced sensor excitation/ interrogation, parameter extraction and bioinspired (neural network and Genetic Algorithm) signal processing/data analysis for smart sensing SPM Tools and Techniques for Nanotechnology Research (specially as a nano-metrology toolset for imaging buried defects and sub-surface pattern recognition for semiconductor failure analysis and in-vitro bio-imaging) This includes wide range of technical expertise in the tools and techniques used for semiconductor process/device simulation, MEMS design and simulation, micro/nanofabrication, materials and surface characterization, solid-state device characterization and testing, signal processing and data analysis, including development of readout electronics, instrumentation interfacing and control. Research & Development Experience - Major Accomplishments


MEMS -Hotplate Gas Sensor: Built low power 1D nanostructured integrated MEMS micro-hotplate gas sensor[1] which was fabricated using soft e-beam lithography for patterning tin oxide nanolines on fragile microscale platform followed by subsequent Pt-electrodes deposition by focused-ion beam (FIB), and demonstrated its applicability to detect CO and benzene. This work was done in collaboration with NIST. (NanoSonix / NU 2010) AFM Add-on Module for Scanning Near Field Ultrasound Holography (SNFUH) for Nanoscale Sub-surface Imaging: Developed architecture of the add-on module for SNFUH that can be interfaced with any commercial AFM platform for nanoscale sub-surface imaging. Add-on module includes digitally synthesized function generator and lock-in-amplifier, all implemented into FPGA and off-the shelf ADC/DAC, amplifier and filter circuits controlled and operated by software driver developed in LabVIEW. This work is supported by DOE. (NanoSonix 2010-2011) MOSFET Embedded Microcantilevers for AFM/ SNFUH imaging: Simulated stress sensitive polysilicon gate MOS transistor for electronic detection of cantilever bending with on-chip CMOS Wheatstone bridge readout and innovative off-chip feedback correction circuit for AFM/ SNFUH imaging[60]. COMSOL Multiphysics was used to design cantilever whereas stress-sensitive MOSFET detector was simulated using Silvaco TCAD (Athena and Atlas) (Process and Device Simulation). This work was supported by NSF. (NanoSonix 2010) Uncooled Infra-Red (IR) Detector: Involved as a key technical personnel in the conception, design and development of an uncooled bimorph microcantilever infra-red detector for night vision application. Based on an extensive theoretical calculations and finite element modeling using COMSOL Multiphysics an innovative biomorph MEMS architecture with integrated electronic readout was developed for LWIR detection. This work was supported by DOD. (NanoSonix 2009-2010) Ultra-small nanopatterned metal oxide gas sensors: Developed high performance (rapid response and recovery and stable base line) gas sensors based on 0D/1D polycrystalline metal oxides and invented patent pending[25-26, 55] novel light (UV) assisted method of chemical sensing at room temperature (RT)[5-6] for the detection of hydrogen and VOCs. Nanopatterned sensors were fabricated using an innovative and versatile nano-patterning technique that synergistically combining dip pen nanolithography (DPN)/ Electron Beam Lithography (EBL) with sol-gel chemistry to pattern polymeric and ceramic nanostructures on variety of substrates with precise nano-scale site and shape specificity. (NU 2004-09) IC compatible MOS capacitor for H2 sensing :Fabricated high performance Pd-gate MOS H2 gas sensor via dry plasma cleaning of Si surface followed by in-situ RF anodization of silicon in O2 plasma at RT and proposed role and mechanism of the formation of H2 induced interface states in MOS sensor by extracting device parameters[74, 76]. (NU 2005-06) Multi-input MOSFET embedded cantilever arrays: Developed ultra-high sensitive and low noise MOSFET embedded cantilever array for bio-chem sensing applications[15, 18] and self-sensing actuators for precise positional control and high frequency oscillation[7]. Proposed the mechanism of stressed induced drain current in MOSFET embedded cantilever platform[8]. Used Synopsys Sentaurus TCAD (Process and Device Simulators) to simulate MOSFET. Two disclosures have been filed for these inventions[54, 57]. (NU 2005-09) Scanning near-field ultrasound holography (SNFUH) as a nano-metrology toolset for buried defects and subsurface pattern recognition: Developed method of imaging nanoscale sub-surface features using ultrasound waves in conjugation with conventional scanning probe microscope (SPM) and demonstrated its application in critical metrology problems in microelectronic devices and circuits (voids and defects) [2-4, 12-13, 16]. (NU 2007-09) Intelligent Electronic Nose (ENOSE) based on embedded PC technology: Developed a turn-key and multiplexed test set-up NanoNoseTM for rapid prototyping of promising gas sensor materials and nanostructures[61]. Showed its applications to detect range of VOCs using hybrid and mono-class metal oxide sensors followed by PCA and ANN as methods of feature extraction and data processing[23]. A disclosure has been filed for this invention[56]. (NU 2004-05) Developed molecular engineering approach to fabricate high sensitivity and robust electroconducting chemoresponsive polymer sensors (chemorsistive and thin film transistor[36, 39] (OTFT) type of devices) by promoting monomer to chip adhesion followed by oxidative and/or electro polymerization[29]. (VCU 2003-04; USYD 2002-03) Proposed method to estimate the effect of variability in physicochemical properties of the polymer-based VOC sensors during sensor fabrication to effectively resolve gas composition[33-34]. (VCU 2003-04) Developed Multichannel Impedimetric ENOSE System based on dual demodulating logarithmic amplifiers and phase detectors with integrated feedback and control logic for automated gain selection. An automated temperature controller using resistive microheater and RTD combination was developed for regulating the operating temperature of sensor[28, 30-32]. A GUI was developed in LabViewTM to control and operate the system.(VCU 2003-04) Developed artificial neural network (ANN) based signal processing and pattern recognition tool for monitoring electrophysiological behavior of neurotoxicity cell-based biosensor arrays under the influence of neurotoxins. (VCU 2003-04) Developed impedimetric hardware platform for electrochemical urease biosensor consisting of potentiometric circuit (for diagnostic), potentiostatic circuit (for redox experiment) and circuit for gain/ phase measurement. (VCU 2003-04) Developed a new, Fetch-n-Store Topology (FAST), encoding scheme for Genetic evolution of feed forward neural network for the application to gas/ odor identification using sensor array. (USYD 2002-03) Developed autonomous robot system for object tracking in indoor environment using ANN for object recognition and simple geometric approach based on threshold detection for control strategy, which was implemented on Nomad XR4000 mobile robot. (USYD 2002-03) Developed hybrid data analysis technique (comprising of ANN and Transformed Cluster Analysis (TCA))[35] as an alternative to regression methods (MLR, PCA and PLS) to model sensory characteristics of fragrances[21, 38]. (USYD 2002-03) Built an application specific ENOSE based on metal-oxide based gas sensors for monitoring environmental air quality. Developed ENOSE records gas/ odor concentration in programmed interval in monitoring mode and sniff mode with automatic periodic calibration and cleaning and is equipped with Predictive Alarm Function for predicting future odor profile[22, 62-63]. Two US patents have been filed on these inventions[58-59]. (ENOSE Pty. Ltd 2002-03)

Developed in collaboration with OligoSense method of fabricating high performance conducting polymer based chemoresistive sensors using an approach based on experimental design (DOE) followed by process modeling and parameter optimization. (UIA Feb., 2001) Developed high density chemical sensors array system for monitoring metabolic conditions of a patent in ICU by means of breath analysis. A programmable data acquisition system capable of handling 300 sensors was built using Keithley 7002 High Density Switching Mainframe. OBLIX S/w written in VB6.0 was developed for measurement and control[64]. (UIA 2001) Designed, built and tested thick film metal oxide gas sensors array (based on SnO2 doped with Pd, Pt and Au; and SnO2 doped with ZnO, NiO and Sb2O3 and undoped SnO2 itself) with on-chip heater and RTD and investigated their gas sensing properties for different VOCs[35, 41, 65]. A method was proposed to increase room temperature sensitivity of the sensor by modulating morphology and surface state density of SnO2 by plasma treatment[51]. (IT-BHU 1996-00) Developed multichannel data acquisition and signal processing tool for gas sensor array. Computer controlled switching controller that comprises of controller section, selection section and switching section was developed for simultaneous scanning of sensor arrays whereas neuro-genetic pattern classifier based on advanced genetic operators was developed for data processing[42-53, 65]. Three different simulation programs - BPNN.C, GANN.C and GAFCM.C (each consisting of 800 lines of C source codes) were developed to test the pattern recognition algorithms. (IT-BHU 1996-00) Developed electronics for High Tc RF SQUID Magnetometer. Off the shelf components, ASICS and PLDs were used to control unit that comprises of control circuit block, reset circuit block and monitor level block[66]. (CEERI, Pilani 1994-95)

Leadership and Management Experience


Co-founded NanoSonix Inc., a hi-tech start-up in the area of MEMS and Nanoscale Imaging. NanoSonix is a result of our inventions of SNFUH Technique for Nano-Scale Sub-Surface Imaging and Ultra-Sensitive MOSFET Embedded Cantilever Platform for sensing and imaging. As a Principal Scientist & Co-founder of NanoSonix Inc. I am responsible for

Leading a team of researchers by engaging them in multiple projects and working with them from concept development to prototype design through hypothesis driven new problem-solving approaches - Project planning, implementation and co-ordination, and evaluation of milestones with a keen eye for product performance, process optimization and production yield. - Designing R&D strategies to meet organizational objectives for a new business and analyzing conditions/ processes necessary to start new research directions or product development efforts with established R&D programs, collaborations and by writing grant applications. - Evaluation of new technology, intellectual property (IP) and business development. Established over $0.15M worth of Nanosensor Device Development, Characterization and Testing (NDCT) Lab at Northwestern University. NDCT houses commercially available instruments and in-house developed advanced instrument and s/w tool for simulation, design, characterization and testing/ evaluation of solid-state micro/ nano-sensors and integrated arrays. NanoNoseTM set-up developed by me is an integral part of this lab and is heavily used for the characterization of chemical sensors. As a lab manager I was responsible for user-support and hands-on training, project supervision, instrumentation interfacing and troubleshooting, procurement of scientific instruments that included market research, product evaluation, and preparation of PO justification. (2005) Established Signal Processing Laboratory (SPL), now known as Signal Processing and Bioinformatics Laboratory, at the Center for Bioelectronics, Biosensors and Biochips (C3B), Virginia Commonwealth University. The SPL is a virtual lab vested with the responsibility for applying appropriate signal processing tools and techniques to all of the biosystems metrology tools under development at the C3B for human health care and medicine. As a Director of SPL I was responsible for project and team management, lab development and management, students supervision and training, preparation of grant applications and establishing new collaborations within and outside of the center. (2003) Co-founded ENOSE Pty. Ltd., a world leading electronic nose (E-NOSE) company in the fields of environmental pollution monitoring, security, and medical diagnostics. E-NOSE Pty Ltd. was a result of our patent applications on the development of Intelligent ENOSE system. In year 2009 E-Nose Pty Ltd was recognized as Innovator of the Year for the Asia-Pacific region. Still working as a consultant to E-NOSE and helping them to improve their product and expand the application portfolio of E-NOSE. (2002) Formed with the help of four faculty members Artificial Intelligence Group in Computer Science Department at Informatics Institute of Technology (IIT), purpose of which was to develop course structures, co-ordinate delivery of modules, identify resource requirements, supervise prototype projects, prepare project proposals, establish collaborations and start new activities via teaching, research and outreach. (2000) Co-ordinator - British Computer Society/B.Sc. Final Year Course at IIT (2000). I was responsible for Individual student support and student counseling; and monitoring and helping in smooth running of the classes and academic session, conducting the exams, chairing faculty meetings and disseminate responsibilities, participating in the board of examiners and course committee meetings including taking the students feedback.
