A lecture by : Dr. Pranav Pandya, MD Cerritos Performing Arts Centre, Cerritos

Quest for knowledge about self

Every single thoughtful person described knowledge as of having only one nature and that is self knowledge. After getting full knowledge of the self nothing is left out to know.

(Differentiate between Shiksha and Vidya)

What is Self (Atman)

Man lives in the body frame. It is alright but is also true that he is not the body. When life departs the body remain as it is. Nothing materially is reduced. Still then the carcass turns useless. From it downs that man lives in the body, none the less he is distinct from it. This distinct entity is called soul.

Quest for knowledge about self

The quest of inner being begins with the inquisition about the beginning of the Universe. The Naasadiya Sukta of Rigved contain the earliest answer to this eternal quest of human beings. Upnishads are the best available answer to the quest of inner-being.

Quest for knowledge about self

The Indra- Virochan Story of Chhandogyopnishad

Brahmas Explanation
Through body senses the human-being, in conscious and subconscious state, perceives, listens, taste and smells but in doing so WHO so ever make use of these sense organs and says that I see, I smell, I feel that I is the real self. Realization of this fact liberates the human-being.

What am I ?
Its correct answer is I am the soul (Atman).

The irony
Every religion recognizes separateness of the body and the soul. In principal we all ascent to also, but deny in practice. Advantages and disadvantages of the body are ones own. Man has accepted the body as I.

In fact..
The body is the temple of the soul. It is very proper to look after its health and convenience, but it is not beneficial that one thinks only about the body and forgets the welfare of the soul.

The Indian Philosophy

Soul is distinct from body. The five senses and the mind all think with an angle of the view of the body.

The Desires of the Senses

Tasty food, Excellent dress, Sweet music, Attractive companion, Various types of luxuries

Ambitions of the Mind

High position, Ample wealth, Wide spread reputation Awe-inspiring status

The Root Cause of All Sins

In satiating all these, entire life is spent When these desire turn fierce, man tries to fulfill these in anyway whatsoever leaving appropriates and inappropriates behind. This is the root cause of all the sins committed.

The material life

Life spent for food and procreation is an animal like one. Passion and covetousness are the aspects that never satiated. How much of enjoyment it is availed. The more the avail, the more is the longing, restlessness, concern, desire and anxiety are on increasing.

The material life

Such an angle of view of identifying the self with the body drags man towards sins, sufferings, intense desires and restlessness.

The spiritual life

When man performs virtuous deeds full of beneficence, selfless service, help, endowment, generosity, sacrifice and ascetic fervour, then arise inner satisfaction, real inner development, lightheartedness, happiness and eternal peace.

The spiritual life

Persons listening the voice of soul and following that always are in auspiciousness. Their tendencies are never directed towards sin and as such, such acts could not be done by them.

The spiritual life

It is known to all that the end result of a sin committed is grievous and that of piousness is beneficent. A person perceiving himself the soul always relish a blissful state.

Benefits of Self-Knowledge
In whom self-knowledge dawns they do not get influenced, agitated and are not restless. Incidents like advantage and disadvantage, life and death, unification and separation, honor and disagreement, covetousness, delusion, anger, enjoyment, love and hatred and so on never agitate man too much.

Benefits of Self-Knowledge
A person with self knowledge get saved from the mental agonies easily with which a person identifying himself as the body feels restless and at times being quietly swayed by excessive emotion commits painful deeds like suicide.

Passion, anger etc. cause sufferings, because we accept their slavery. The moment we raise the flag in revolt, illusion will sink into its own burrow.

The tales of Lion

Importance of self-revelation is of such sort. One who perceives It, is freed from all the sorrows and miseries for which he was lamenting every moment.

Source of eternal bliss

As the perception of identifying one-self with the body diminishes and identification with the soul increases the perception of atmavat sarvabhuteshu (the universe is the reflection of my own self) swells up and undying happiness and peace comes into life.

Spirituality and material life

But with this could material benefits be availed? Advantages of this world and the world after are wrongly divided into two separate sections. In reality there can not be two parts. That which is of this world is also of the world here after. Both are so much tied to each other like the belly and the back.

Spirituality and material life

It would be sufficient to say this much that perceiving the self is the best of all the traits to make practical life a success. All the worldly developments go with self assent. One who has inner spiritual strength has everything and every success comes under his control.
