fifty-plus years of meatloaf dinners, a few generations of kids, and sev-
eral house moves.) Was its destiny really to end up here, in an attic,
under piles of debris hosting a family of mice? That is when our mis-
sion started. When we adopted this neglected place, it marked the
beginning of a very long undertaking to resurrect the buildings, the
history, and, most of all, the collections, while honoring the humble
origins of this place by doing it all on the cheap, following the self-
imposed rule of found, free, or flea. This is the story of thriftiness and a
determination to transform discarded objects into more than 150 full
collections again—a testament that collecting doesn’t take much
money, just a love of the forgotten, everyday things that got left behind.

production made them cheap and plentiful,
and a child could walk with a whole handful
of “commies,” the nickname for common clay
