s I get older, I find it difficult recall words as easily as I used to. You know, the thing, has become a phrase I rely on far too frequently. Considering my struggles with the English language, I am utterly blown away by a Granite Bay residents ability to speak not only her native tongue but four foreign languages. Little Sophie Krsulic (who is also this months cover girl) has a passion for languages. How the 8year-old mastered so many verbs, words and pronunciations is a mystery to me. Check out her story on page 4 and find out how she wants to put her skills to use in the future.

Earlier this summer, Sophie participated in a Mandarin camp at Sierra Chinese School in Rocklin, which also teaches children about Chinese games and culture. For four weeks in July, the family hosted a 15-year-old teenager from Taiwan, where the national language is Mandarin. Nancy Krsulic had to remind her daughter not to speak too much Mandarin with the exchange student, who was in the United States to practice English. I want to live in China, Sophie said. I can eat Chinese food every day. In the meantime, shes reading R.L. Stines Goosebumps books in Spanish, and playing tennis, soccer and baseball other activities she enjoys. But language practice is her top priority.

Tim Slone, a chiropractic neurologist, runs the Rocklin center with his brother, Jim Slone. A franchise of the national company, Brain Balance is meeting the needs of kids who struggle with ADHD, ADD, Aspergers syndrome, Tourettes syndrome, autism and a host of learning issues. According to its own research, Brain Balance claims in a recent study of 60 ADHD kids that 82 percent of their parents no longer considered them to have ADHD after three months in the program. In the same study, 60 percent of the students improved their academic performance by two grade levels in three months, and 35 percent of students improved by four academic grade levels. While the program isnt medical, Brain Balance claims its highly effective. We look at the cause of why a kid has an issue with reading, for example. If you dont address development, you cant address function, Tim Slone said. We are looking at primitive reflexes, at sensory integration, at nutrition. Does the child get dizzy when he spins around? That helps us to know if one side is dominant. Does the child have any food sensitivities? There may be an amino acid or mineral deficiency. By addressing the origin of the condition, the childs function improves because his or her development has changed. Slone explained that balancing

The motor system is a direct reflection of how the brain is functioning, Slone said. I would recommend that these parents sit through a workshop to see if their child might have a problem. Thats exactly what mom Danielle Mitchell did when her son, Andrew, had difficulty learning. He was diagnosed with ADD and he couldnt focus, Mitchell said. He was hyperactive and had trouble completing a task. He was having a really hard time academically. Mitchell is no stranger to kids and learning. A home-school mom, she has taught all seven of her kids, but said she had never experienced difficulty teaching until working with 7year-old Andrew. I tried every method that I possibly could, Mitchell said. He just couldnt slow his mind down, couldnt retain anything. Doctor (Tim) Slone assessed Andrew, and gave him a blood test to see what his sensitivities were. Slone developed a personal plan to deal with Andrews right-side defect. Andrew does computer work, along with vision exercises and movements that stimulate the underdeveloped parts of his brain, Mitchell said. Today, after only a couple of months working with Brain Balance, Andrew has been taken off his ADD medication, and couldnt be happier. Before the program, he would struggle to write a sentence. He had issues processing and couldnt understand what he had read. Hes writing all his sentences now, and his reading comprehension is way up, Mitchell said. Its like hes a different kid, and Im really looking forward to starting his home schooling again in the fall. Kelly OHarren, mom of 9year-old Nolan, had a similar

Like Mitchell, OHarren is excited for her son to attend school in the fall. n unfortunate experience in Joe and Mary Brunos life prompted them to completely change their lifestyle and provide a pleasant place for three elderly women with special health needs. As he tells the backstory, Joe Bruno points to his Uncle Frank Tomasonis military mementos from World War II. Theyre framed and displayed prominently on the family room wall. My uncle was like a second dad, Joe said. When he developed lung cancer, we found him a residential care facility for the elderly in the Bay Area, but it was god-awful. They fed him chicken feet with rice and gravy for breakfast. Uncle Frank stayed alone in his room for days and would call, crying, Joe said. After going through that with our uncle, we decided that when our son went off to college, we would turn our house into a care facility, he said. Joe, 55, and Mary, 53, opened Lakeland Manor in Granite Bay last year. Were an alternative to someone being just another person in a nursing home of 50-100 people, Joe said. The couple provides plenty of TLC, comfort and conversation. Their focus and that of a helper/caregiver, Michelle, is obviously on the three women. They bend down or sit next to the women, listen carefully and reply softly. Belle, a friendly 6-year-old Maltese, likes to sit in their laps. Joe Bruno understands what its like to be seriously ill. He actually had me explain things to the class, Bowler said. So by the end of that year I was convinced that I was to be a teacher.
an adoptive mom. Bowler and her husband John have five children: birth children John (nicknamed Jocean or Jo), 35; Francis, 32; and Nicole, 22. They adopted two Korean babies Sarah is now 19, and Jake 13.
At this time Bowler has 14 published books including textbooks for primary grades, and has plans for more. She has particular affection for Asian topics in her picture books. Her first picture book, Geckos Complaint, arose out of her interest in Indonesia. Son Jo was a foreign exchange student there and eventually married an Indonesian. Bowler visited and was fascinated by the culture.
I was just so struck by all the folktales they have and how they told all these stories and all their art, and Im like, oh my gosh, no one knows anything about this place, Bowler said. She brought home a stack of folktales and retold a couple in what would become Geckos Complaint. She then returned to Indonesia and, with the help of her son, began the process of finding a Balinese-Indonesian illustrator.

Zheng led more than 300 ships across the South China Sea to the Indian Ocean, all the way to Africa, to bring treasures home to China. The book was placed on Taiwans Good Book List in 2009, which is the most prestigious award a childrens book can receive in Taiwan. Her most recent book, All About Korea, came out in April of this year. Bowler had help from Sarah and Jake on this. The two had attended Friends of Korea school, which met
once a week on Sundays. Each also has traveled to Korea and learned firsthand about the country. I made examples of the craft activities that ended up in the book, said Jake Bowler, who will be going into the 8th grade. My sister Sarah helped my mom to create the recipes in the book. It was fun to help my mom with all of this. Im glad my mom wrote the book because it made us more involved with the Korean culture. Tuttle Publishing, an international publisher with an office in Vermont, has published all three of Bowlers picture books. The thing that attracted me to Annies work boils down to her enthusiasm, Tuttle Editor Sandra Korinchak said. Were very excited and thrilled about the book (All About Korea). Its been getting some nice comments so far.

ancy Thompson, Director of Recruitment for Drexels Sacramento Center for Graduate Studies, didnt have to look far for one of her first recruits. Shortly after garnering the position of recruitment director, Thompson enrolled herself in one of Drexels many masters programs. A Bay Area native, Thompson has lived in Granite Bay with her husband and high school sweetheart, Jeff, and their three children for 21 years. On Saturday, June 25, Nancy Thompson graduated from Drexel along with more than 100 other students at the Crocker Museum at Drexels first ever commencement ceremony in Sacramento. Now, having received her degree and recruited 424 students simultaneously, she will return to Drexel to continue inspiring and encouraging students like her.

Nancy Thompson, director of recruitment for Drexels Center for Graduate Studies, recently received her masters in education from Drexel.
3. Tell us about the significance of Drexels first commencement in Sacramento at the Crocker Museum.
Drexel had the program which fit my interests, education with a business approach. Plus, I was encouraged by one of my own recruits! Sitting across from my desk I mentioned I was considering the program myself. With a bit encouragement I went for it and now two years later, hurray, I am done.
2. What did you receive your masters degree in?
This was the first time in Drexels 120-year history that a commencement ceremony was held outside of Philadelphia. More than 100 students from five different colleges and schools received their diplomas. It was a very special celebration with more than 700 family, friends, faculty and staff attending. I was especially blessed to have my family and my 89-year-old father travel to Sacramento to join in the celebration.
4. How does your role as a student help you with your job?
my job. I like to think I am more strategic and creative in my approach to solving problems. During much of the program, discussion in class and assignments, we focused on the California higher education predicament. We discussed how we got where we are and what practical solutions need to be put in place to fix it.
5. What is your favorite part of your job?

My favorite part is being able to encourage people to pursue their dreams. Ive met so many wonderful, smart individuals who because of the new knowledge they have acquired through their graduate work are making an important impact in the Sacramento region. At the end of the day, for me, it is all about how I can make a positive lasting impression in the lives of others.

Gina Anixter of Granite Bay is training for the Ford Ironman Triathlon to be held in Tempe, Ariz., Nov. 20. The triathlon combines a 2.4-mile swim, 112-mile bike ride and 26.2mile run.
What inspired you to take on Ironman?
Ive been training for triathlons for eight or nine years. I just started with the sprint triathlons. Over the years I have just increased the number of or length of them. I decided I would take on the challenge of Ironman, which is in November. It is a huge commitment and I am not really a long distance athlete, but over time have just decided to take on a bigger challenge. With the outcome of the last few half ironmans it inspired me to just try and go for it. I have a couple of friends that have completed Ironman I train with. Its fun because we all have that long-term goal in mind. It was inspiring to see them come across the finish line.
What is your training schedule like?
string. What I do now in training is I try to eat real food fresh fruits and vegetables. I try to stay away from refined Gina Anixter sugars and flour. Generally before a training Im more of a fan of oatmeal. I use Hammer products. I generally eat balanced meals every three to four hours throughout the day. Ill do four rides over a hundred miles, three 20-mile runs and about an hour and a half of swimming. That gets you the feeling of being on your feet that long. The big thing is planning ahead. Having a plan and executing the plan gives you a sense of accomplishment even if its not a race. Im going to do a couple half ironmans and an Olympic distance race. I have three or four races before Ironman.
What are your goals for the race?

There is about eight months worth of training. Im training about 15 hours a week and I work full-time and I have two kids. I wake up around 4:30 every morning. I train most days twice a day. I swim, bike and run. I teach cycle for Johnson Ranch. I bike four days a week, and swim four days a week and run five days a week. Then there is the acupuncture I have to do. The time spent away from my family as my long rides and my runs get longer. Working full time and having two kids and a husband, its hard to juggle it all. That means more hours on my bike, also just to keep my body healthy. Ill be 45, so with that comes the risk of being injured. For me, because of my injury, running is probably the most painful. My pace is a little bit off with my injury. That is probably what I kind of look forward to least.
How do you get through walls or tough moments?
know how good its going to feel when I am finished. I also have a lot of great friends that I train with. We can use each other to sort of get motivated to finish a workout. I just actually got certified to become a coach, a triathlon coach. I motivate them as much as they motivate me. You have to be up for them too.

Coffeehouse has holy trinity of live music, great coffee and atmosphere
heres no shortage of people who have a religion-like devotion to coffee. Where Jericho Coffee has succeeded is in creating a place where you can be comfortable with your faith (while also worshipping your false idol the coffee bean). Owners Franc and Sheri Woods opened the Christianthemed coffeehouse in 2005. The Fish 103.9 is often playing in the background and there are loads of Christian books for sale, but Jericho isnt about winning souls. Im not the kind of person to get in peoples face about faith, Franc Woods said. The environment can do the work. People can see hey, its OK to talk about (faith) and not feel threatened about it. I figured if we created the environment, God will do the work. With comfy couches, soothing water feature and glow of the electric fireplace, its the perfect spot to chat with a pal or do a little soul searching. And people do hold devotional meetings at the shop on Sierra College Boulevard. Franc (pronounced France its short for Francis) worked at Hewlett Packard for 25 years and had always kicked around the idea of having a place like Jericho. Something music-oriented with books a place to relax. I needed something different than a cubical. I needed to be out with people, he said. their home. Both Franc and Sheri also got jobs at Starbucks, to see if they really wanted to do the whole barrista thing. While at Coffee Fest, they found their bean provider Fox Hallow Coffee, a microroaster out of Washington state. The beans are put to good use at Jericho, where youll find all your standard coffee drinks along with some fun surprises. One standout is the Cinnamon Bliss Latte, an awakening mix of spice and sweetness that is truly heavenly. And it didnt make me jittery something Franc attributes to the quality of Fox
Hallows beans. Beyond beverages, Jericho features a pastry case overflowing with tempting delights such as apricot bars, macaroons and Mississippi mud cake. Theres also a good assortment of fare if youre a little more hungry. The chicken salad (Sheris recipe) is a tasty mixture of cranberries, apple, celery and cashews that can be served on a croissant, wrap or bread. As for the clientele at Jericho, youre likely to find anyone from medical professionals looking to jumpstart their day to a man cramming for his bar exam, whom Franc said has been taking up residence there recently. The shop also has wi-fi for cus-

tomers. Cindy Harkness, 34, of Orangevale, has been coming to Jericho for the last year and a half. Its a warm, inviting atmosphere and people are friendly. Franc is great, she said. Its not your typical coffee shop. She recommends the Jericho German Chocolate Cake a decadent blend of Ghirardelli Dark & White Chocolate, espresso, coconut and hazelnut. But a big part of why I come here is the music on Friday and Saturday
nights, she said. She occasionally plays guitar at the open mics held once a month, which she said are packed with talented local performers. I think theres a lack of places in the area to do that kind of thing, said Woods, who also plays guitar in a praise band. Theres talent in the area that doesnt have a venue to (play in). On a recent Saturday, a handful of what looked like regulars assembled to watch musicians Bart Vogel, John Freeman and
Robert Greene play acoustic guitar on the patio. Patrons sipped their iced coffees and listened intently to the musicians folksy tunes as the setting sun cast a glow on the oak tree that sits outside Jericho. Yes, some of the songs were about Him with a capital H but no one was asking you to accept Jesus into your life. About the only conversion you will have at Jericho is a new belief in this alternative coffeehouse experience.

ooking for a weekend getaway or vacation locale that offers a variety of family activities and provides some unique historical places to explore as well? Consider a trip to Carson City. Typically overshadowed by Reno and the heralded Lake Tahoe region, the small-town charm of Carson City can quickly enamor first-time visitors. Situated in Nevadas picturesque high desert (4,600 foot elevation), south of Reno off the Highway 395 corridor, and less than a half hour from South Lake Tahoe, Carson City is carving out its own niche as a very affordable vacation spot for both families and couples. A lengthy list of activities awaits tourists this time of year in Carson City, which ranks among the smallest capitol cities in the United States. One cool option is whitewater kayaking or rafting down the Carson River with the high desert scenery providing a gorgeous backdrop. The citys water trails are meant for novice, but experts can locate some challenging stretches as well. If water is not your thing, there are many other recreational choices to consider, including: numerous hiking and biking trails; variety of fishing locations; horseback riding (with a moonlight option); and nine golf courses that accommodate all skill levels. In winter months, skiing is a mere 35 minutes away at Heavenly and Mount Rose ski resorts. Add one more item to the activity list gambling. There are 10 casinos to test your gaming skills. And like most small casino towns, Carson City offers plenty of deals on affordable lodging and food. It also features some very unique

American author and humorist Mark Twain spent three years (1861-64) in Carson City and nearby Virginia City. real estate
While this estate has all of the Los Lagos formality, there are family-friendly touches as well.
A formal pool, large with scalloped ends the just-right size for swimming laps is the centerpiece of a formal European garden. I was trying to create a miniaturized Versailles, the homeowner said. His attempt was successful. A border of hedgerows, thoughtfully planned lawn areas and perfectly placed rose bushes create a landscape that will transport visitors across the pond perhaps to the Palace of Versailles Orangerie or Hampton Court Palace gardens. With all its formality, the backyard has plenty of functionality, too.
Plums, peaches, pomegranate, pluots and yearround lemon trees are just some of the delectable edibles that can be found on the property. A raised vegetable garden produces a variety of delicious bounty as well. But what good is tasty food without a great kitchen in which to prepare it? This homes kitchen is a brilliant example of pairing formality with casual comfort. The great-room style kitchen, which opens to a large family room, was designed with an entertaining lifestyle in mind. We designed the kitchen this way because we wanted to have space for two or three people

This is truly the focal point of the home, the homeowner said. The sellers, who are the original owners, routinely entertain 50 or more family members and friends during the holidays. The kitchen is filled with professional-grade appliances with names like Dacor and Bosch. Double ovens, built-in microwave, dishwasher, trash compactor, built-in refrigerator, double sinks, wet island and oversized pantry are key for every dream kitchen. Marfil marble tiles, Brazilian cherry wood and plush, seashell-white carpets. From the dining rooms trey ceiling, dressed in bronzes and golds, to the living rooms doublesided fireplace that leads to a formal office or library, filled with Brazilian cherry cabinetry and built-in computer center, the homes builder paid attention to the smallest detail. But the drama wasnt saved for the downstairs. A sweeping staircase leads visitors to the brilliantly lit upper level where guest suites and the master bedroom await. Large enough to contain both oversized bed and a living room, the master also includes a million-dollar view to the grounds beyond. Soothing splashes from the pools waterfalls waft to upstairs windows a relaxing music that buyers can fall asleep to. The master bath includes double vanities, jetted tub with view, double-headed shower and a water closet that includes a bidet, while the vanity area also includes a separate makeup mirror and counter all with luscious granite tops and opulent gold fixtures. The master closet is large enough to accommodate any wardrobe, and includes substantial hanging space, shelving and shoe racks. But it may come back to the yard when it comes to falling in love with this house.

The one thing I love about this home is the detailed work all the boxed ceilings, crown molding, cased windows and boxed doors, said Kendra Bishop of the Bishop Real Estate Group. Theres so much quality woodwork throughout the home, and the property is meticulously maintained. The home is filled with white wood crown, wainscoting, cabinetry, which marries with three floor types Crema

Fran Dixon, of Ellington Properties, shows a client the backyard of a $2.3 million, five bedroom home in Granite Bay.
t was the best of jobs, it was the worst of jobs. High-end real estate specialists spend their days perusing some of Placer Countys most luxurious properties. What could be more fun, right? If you follow Bravo TVs Million Dollar Listing and HGTVs Selling New York listing million-dollar-plus homes can be fraught with hazards. Buyers insisting on an agent picking them up at the airport, clients demanding furnishings or even cars and clothing be included in the deal and
intense competition with other Realtors. But is reality television Granite Bays reality? Not necessarily, according to some of Granite Bays biggest names in real estate. It just depends on the client, as a person, said Granite Bay Properties Eve Fenstermaker. Personalities are personalities, no matter what size a home someone is looking for. Fenstermaker gives the same professional advice: have a professional stage your home when you put it on the market, no matter the homes square footage or selling price.
Im seeing a stable market; and in the last few months, Ive never been busier. Granite Bay is ultimately, the best place to raise a family, and the luxury market here is still really strong.
Valisa Schmidley, Keller Williams Luxury Homes agent
And Granite Bay does offer some of the priciest homes in the region.
From June 2010 through May of this year, 35 homes have sold for over $1 million. From just under 4,000 square feet, to over 16,000, and from four bedrooms to whopping eight bedroom homes, million-dollar properties in Granite Bay arent going away anytime soon. Take a look at the current market. As of mid June, there were 40 properties listed for a million dollars or more, with 14 of those properties currently in escrow. According to Keller Williams Luxury Homes agent Valisa Schmidley, there are plenty of buyers for this market, and lit-
tle inventory. So many sellers are reticent to put their homes on the market, thinking they couldnt get a good price for their home, Schmidley said. But Im seeing a stable market; and in the last few months, Ive never been busier. Granite Bay is ultimately, the best place to raise a family, and the luxury market here is still really strong. Fran Dixon with Ellington Properties agrees. We have great neighborhoods in a great community, at a great price, he said. This is the best time to buy that I have

continued from page 42 ever seen. But when it comes to high-end haughtiness and millionaire meanness, the Million Dollar Listing reality show is mostly myth, at least when it comes to Granite Bays pricey real estate. I dont do anything different for the ultra high-end client than I would do for a $300,000 buyer, Schmidley said.
This $2.3 million 6,000-square-foot Tuscan-style home in Granite Bay is lavishly spacious on the inside and has a wonderful landscaped backyard with a pool.
If the $300,000 buyer has a teenager that is nervous about the local high school, Ill take him and his family to tour the campus. I recently had the pleasure of introducing a teen and his parents to Granite Bay High Schools principal. Im glad to do that for my clients, and the purchase price of the homes they are looking at is irrelevant. Fenstermaker agrees. I would do the same things
with a modestly priced home, like staging, or offer the same services to a client, regardless of the cost of the home they were looking for. The key is getting to know your client, and really knowing what they want, even if they might not know, themselves. While television shows might feature buyers who demand everything, including the $100,000 car in the garage to be included in the homes

purchase price, Granite Bay buyers tend to be polite in their requests. Buyers have a tendency to want to write more furnishings or personal property in the contract now, than in the past, Schmidley said. They see an opportunity and oftentimes the homeowner is downsizing so they can come to terms. Fenstermaker agrees that buyers sometimes ask for items to be left in the home that sellers werent planning to leave behind.
People can want curtains, refrigerators, play structures and even furniture, she said. I encourage clients to make an offer on the home, not on the things. Fenstermaker said there is a certain image that should be maintained when working with any client in the real estate market, high-end or otherwise. I dont like to put lock boxes on homes I typically show them by appointment only, she

said. In addition, professionalism is important. You have to show yourself as a professional. Dress for success and drive a well-kept car, Fenstermaker said.
While the Million Dollar Listing program had an entire show devoted to the cut throat business of obtaining listings, Schmidley said she doesnt find the industry cut
throat at all. I dont feel that area Realtors are in competition. People seem to select their real-estate specialist for a reason, and there are enough
houses for everyone, she said. I have the utmost respect for my colleagues, and the way I see it, houses come and go, but my colleagues and clients are here forever. At the end of the day, Realtors simply want whats best for their clients. We just make sure the home shows at its very best, and make the client comfortable, Schmidley said. Its almost better if the Realtor stays in the background as much as possible.

difference. Burgers and hot dogs are traditional barbecue meats, but they arent the healthiest. Try the following: Choose lean cuts of beef, pork or poultry Marinade with low fat dressing Make hamburgers with extra-lean ground beef Take the skin off chicken before grilling Replace beef patties with ground turkey patties Grill up salmon or cod Side Dishes: This is where most people run into trouble. Barbecue side dishes are typi-
cally filled with loads of fat. Creamy coleslaw and potato salads can hold as much as 15 grams of fat per serving. Try the following instead: Make veggie kabobs and grill them Grill bok choy (see recipe) Replace the mayo in your salads with low-fat mayo Serve fresh salad with light vinaigrette Try whole-grain macaroni for your pasta salad Put out a veggie tray with low fat dip Drinks: Most people dont realize that beverages play a big role in summer weight gain. Margaritas, beer, soda pop and punch all contain lots of empty calories. Try the following: Drink water, it is always your healthiest option Stick with light beer wine with soda water
If you have to have a soda pop stick with diet (no aspartame) Brew unsweetened ice tea and serve with lemon Dessert: Yes, there are ways to satisfy your sweet tooth while getting lean. Think outside of the box instead of turning to the typical fattening options like ice cream, pie, cake or cookies. Try the following: Grill mango, banana and pineapple on kabobs Stick with sorbet or yogurt instead of ice cream Replace peach pie with grilled peach halves Remember, its OK to splurge every once in a while. Try to limit foods that have no nutritional value. Just keep in mind that by taking a few of the above suggestions you can enjoy great food while getting back into great shape.

chool is right around the corner. Before you know it your child will be bouncing home from school wanting your help. Parents were always asking me as a teacher or principal what they could do to help their child learn. One of the most important things is good communication. So, be sure your questions are up to par if your goal is to help your child think and learn.
Avoid questions which invariably cause a yes or no answer. Try to limit questions that start with do, did, could, can, will, would, is, should and are ... I didnt say it would be easy, but if you think about it, these questions all call for a yes or no answer.
Probing promotes thinking
Probing is asking a series of questions, like Do you mean ? Could you clarify for me? How do you know that? Unless the child is exposed to this kind of questioning, he will probably not ask further questions, which would promote helping him understand. Not too many children have assimilated these skills.
