God has displayed Himself to us; He is THE GOD. God does not share His glory with any other. He has commanded us to honor Him as the only God, to love Him, and to obey Him. However, we do not listen and do not obey. Jesus, Gods only Son, had to come and remedy our sin for us. We can now live in restoration with the One God because of the death and resurrection of Jesus.

Dear Sunday School Teacher, Your ministry as a teacher for our Lord has eternal value! When we view our ministry in light of eternity, we see its importance and the privilege that God has entrusted to us. In Psalm 78, the Bible also reminds us of this great calling: One generation commending the Gospel to the next. Treasuring Christ Curriculum: The ministry resource that you hold in your hand is produced and shaped by the local churchThe Bride of Christ. We have three primary strategies that guide us. First, we desire to produce a Gospel-centered curriculum that allows every child, babies to high school students, to study the same Scripture passage each week. Second, we seek to equip parents to thrive in their God-given role as their childs primary discipler. We want this resource, therefore, to connect the church and the home by providing the Connecting Church and Home resource within the curriculum. Third, we want to respond to the desperate need for curriculum resources around the world. We desire to bless the nations with a tool that will help them reach the world with the Gospel of Christ. Quarter One: God on Display Every relationship begins with an introduction. God introducing Himself to us is the heartbeat of this study. God on Display is a major theme that runs throughout all of Scripture. Gods desire to have communion with those He created is seen from cover to cover of the Bible. In the first few pages, we see God communing in the Garden of Eden with Adam and Eve. The theme of communion continues to be seen through the role of the Old Testament tabernacle and temple. In the New Testament, God became incarnate in Jesus, God with us. After Jesus, the Father gives the Holy Spirit to believers and institutes the Church. Fellowship in the Church breeds community, both with God and others made in His likeness. As believers, we are guaranteed that we will spend eternity in communion with God, dwelling in His presence. God is on display: everywhere; in the past, present and future; and in our lives as believers. Let us live continually to display Gods greatness and love.

Deuteronomy 6:4-9

FOR YOuR EdIFICaTIOn

Enter the story If a stranger walked into your home, what could he learn about you just from seeing what is on the other side of your front door? What is important to you? Is it movies or a flat-screen television? Would he be able to tell what college or professional sports team you root for? Is it books, art and culture that line the walls in your den or media room? Is it the fancy gadgets that make their home atop your granite counters? Is it the latest styles that fill your cedar closets? Is it hunting trophies that hang over the mantle or couch? Is it expensive, model furniture that people cant even sit on for fear of getting it dirty? Is it pictures of all the children and grandchildren? All these communicative possessions reflect the hidden intensities of the heart. In the home of a devout Jew, both 3,000 years ago and today, one would find items that pointed to God. Our Treasure Story passage the Shema, Deuteronomy 6:4-9is the anchor passage of the Jewish faith and heritage. The Jews could have chosen other passages to be central to their faith, but this one stands out from all others. The Shema helps shape everything that a Jewish family does and even affects the dcor of their homes. The mezuzah (pronounced muh ZOO zuh), which means doorpost, refers to small scrolls inscribed with the Shema and a linked passage, Deuteronomy 11:13-21. Mezuzahs are attached to the front door of Jewish homes, almost like a wreath we would place on our doors today. These mezuzahs show remembrance of the first Passover (Exodus 12).

The Shema passage instructs us to live our lives devoted to the one true God. Jesus also proclaimed this truth to His disciples. He said the greatest commandment was to love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul and mind (Mark 12:28-30). The focus is on our hearts, not our homes. Our entire lives should model that devotion and love and whole hearted affection. While we may not hang scrolls on the doorposts of our homes, do our hearts and lives reflect that we treasure Christ above all else?

means hear. The main statement of the Jewish law that says God is the one true God and His people are commanded to love and obey Him. Holman Illustrated Bible Dictionary for Kids, pg. 175

This verse [Deuteronomy 6:4] is

one which the Jews write upon their phylacteries because of its awesome expression of divine truth. The words are also used both morning and evening to begin their daily liturgy. The Baptist Study Bible, notes on Deuteronomy 6:4, pg. 256

story Outline The Shema isnt a suggestion that God gave the Israelites to obey. These six verses are the crux of the Jewish faith. They are spoken every day in the home, and children are raised knowing and memorizing this passage. The Shema is not to be forgotten, but treasured above the rest of life. One of the ways people of the Jewish faith treasure the Shema is by wearing a tefillin. A tefillin is a set of small, cubic leather boxes painted black, containing scrolls of parchment inscribed with verses from the Torah, with leather straps dyed black on one side and worn by observant Jews during weekday morning prayers. There is one tefillin that is placed on the upper arm, and the strap is wrapped around the arm, hand and fingers. Another one is for the head, placed above the forehead with the strap going around the head and over the shoulders. Devout followers of Yahweh take His writings seriously. The whole of the passage is rooted in the opening verse: Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one (Deuteronomy 6:4). This statement is declarative and leaves no room for discussion or debate. It is accepted as fact and truth from the mouth of the living God and Creator of the universe. Moses (writer of the book of Deuteronomy) would not have questioned the Lord on this statement. The word hear in this verse has the intent of hearing to obey. Often we hear without the follow-through. We say to our children,Are you listening to me? What parents often mean by that question is if their children not only heard what they said but then are they going to obey what they heard. God commands us the same. He wants us to hear in such a way that we will live our lives in radical obedience to what will follow the command. Wise instructions follow Deuteronomy 6:4 and exhort us to do the following: lOVE ThE lORd YOuR gOd WITh all YOuR hEaRT, sOul and mIghT (Deuteronomy 6:5). This holistic approach speaks of the totality of who we are. We can compartmentalize our lives and keep God to a Sunday-only relationship. Compartmentalizing is not the kind of love and devotion that God, the sovereign King, commands from His followers. He desires a wholehearted, abandon-everything kind of love that requires everything we are.

ThE COmmands shall BE On OuR hEaRTs (Deuteronomy 6:6). Of course, Moses is not indicating the physical need to open ones chest cavity and insert the written law on the physical heart. Instead, this heart is representative of everything a man ishis emotional being and his physical, psychological and spiritual self. There is no room for dichotomy. The instruction found in the Shema is to influence everything we say, think and do. The strong verb usage of shall indicates an active verb. Obedience of this verse will require action by us. YOu shall TEaCh ThEm (Deuteronomy 6:7). This passage is primarily written to fathers, but the command is for any believer. (Hint: This should be one of the main reasons you are involved in teaching children and students in the local church.) We should talk about the Scriptures all the time. Colossians 3:16 helps us to see the indwelling nature of the Word of God and how it should always be in our hearts and on our tongues. The Shema tells us where we are to speak of these truths: sitting in our homes, walking, lying down and getting up. Basically, all the time. 24/7.

ThEY aRE TO BE VIsIBlE REmIndERs (Deuteronomy 6:8-9). People of Jewish faith wear the verses of the Shema on their arms and foreheads. They also post them on the doorposts of their homes. The closest resemblances we have in our faith is WWJD bracelets, Christian T-shirts, billboards or decorative frames with Scripture written on them. We may not put a tiny scroll on our doorpost, but we can have Scripture posted around our homes, on a post-it note on our mirrors, on an index card taped to our dashboards, on a refrigerator magnet or repeated in the songs on our playlists. More importantly, our hearts should reflect the truths found in the Scriptures. Our hearts should reflect the Lordship of Christ, how we treasure Him and the Gospel.

Gospel Truths About God

Everything we learn about God in Deuteronomy 6:4 stirs us and motivates us in obeying the rest of the Shema passage. God makes a declarative statement. God is one God. There is no other: The Source and End of all things is One. This realityGod, Yahweh, Elohim, Theosthe central subject of all Jewish-Christian Scripture, is one, not sixteen. Any polytheistic [religion with many gods] conception is by definition inadequate (Thomas Oden, The Living God, pg. 56).

It would be difficult to overstate the significance of

the monotheistic [there is only one God] declaration of Deuteronomy 6:4. Israel is summoned to hear and heed. Yahweh is their God. Yahweh is one. James Hamilton, The Journal of Family Ministry, Fall/Winter 2010, pg. 13

Gospel Truths About Man

Man was given commands to live out in the Shema. The Shema was given as an umbrella to the rest of the Law. The Shema was an exhortation given to the Israelites to love God above everything and everyone else. However, man was unable to keep every portion of the Law and often dismissed the love the Lord your God passage. Man filled his heart with many idols or other seemingly important things. The Israelites tended to forget that God made them to glorify Himself. We, today, do the same. We do that by not obeying Him and not loving Him above all other things in this world.

The claim of the Word of God upon us is absolute:

the Word is to be received, trusted and obeyed, because it is the Word of God the King. J. I. Packer, Knowing God, pg. 113

Gospel Truths About Redemption

This command to love the Lord your God was given as part of the Law to the Israelites. They were to follow these laws and live them out. However, sin kept them from being able to do this. Sinful nature prohibits our ability to live righteously on our own merit before a holy God. Therefore, we will see Jesus enter the picture later as our redemption, as our reconciliation to God the Father. He is our righteousness (2 Corinthians 5:21).

You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates. deuteronomy 6:20-25: When your son asks you in time to come, What is the meaning of the testimonies and the statutes and the rules that the LORD our God has commanded you? then you shall say to your son, We were Pharaohs slaves in Egypt. And the LORD brought us out of Egypt with a mighty hand. And the LORD showed signs and wonders, great and grievous, against Egypt and against Pharaoh and all his household, before our eyes. And He brought us out from there, that He might bring us in and give us the land that He swore to give to our fathers. And the LORD commanded us to do all these statutes, to fear the LORD our God, for our good always, that He might preserve us alive, as we are this day. And it will be righteousness for us, if we are careful to do all this commandment before the LORD our God, as He has commanded us. deuteronomy 11:13-21: And if you will indeed obey my commandments that I command you today, to love the LORD your God, and to serve Him with all your heart and with all your soul, He will give the rain for your land in its season, the early rain and the later rain, that you may gather in your grain and your wine and your oil. And He will give grass in your fields for your livestock, and you shall eat and be full. Take care lest your heart be deceived, and you turn aside and serve other gods and worship them; then the anger of the LORD will be kindled against you, and He will shut up the heavens, so that there will be no rain, and the land will yield no fruit, and you will perish quickly off the good land that the LORD is giving you. You shall therefore lay up these words of mine in your heart and in your soul, and you shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes. You shall teach them to your children, talking of them

when you are sitting in your house, and when you are walking by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise. You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates, that your days and the days of your children may be multiplied in the land that the LORD swore to your fathers to give them, as long as the heavens are above the earth. More to be desired are they than gold, even much fine gold; sweeter also than honey and drippings of the honeycomb. Moreover, by them is your servant warned; in keeping them there is great reward. Psalm 119:9-16: How can a young man keep his way pure? By guarding it according to your word. With my whole heart I seek you; let me not wander from your commandments! I have stored up your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you. Blessed are you, O LORD; teach me your statutes! With my lips I declare all the rules of your mouth. In the way of your testimonies I delight as much as in all riches. I will meditate on your precepts and fix my eyes on your ways. I will delight in your statutes; I will not forget your word. mark 12:28-29: And one of the scribes came up and heard them disputing with one another, and seeing that He answered them well, asked Him, Which commandment is the most important of all? Jesus answered, The most important is, Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one.

Colossians 3:16: Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God. James 1:22-25: But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man who looks intently at his natural face in a mirror. For he looks at himself and goes away and at once forgets what he was like. But the one who looks into the perfect law, the law of liberty, and perseveres, being no hearer who forgets but a doer who acts, he will be blessed in his doing.

My Mission As Teacher:
What does your life reflect that you treasure? Does it reveal that you treasure God, the Gospel and His Word? Or does it reveal that you treasure this world above Him? How can you encourage others this week to know and seek the One God of the universe?

Prayer Points:
Pray for opportunity (and active obedience) to speak the truth of the Scriptures into someones life this week. Pray for your students this week. Pray that their eyes and ears would be open to hearing the truth found in Gods Word. May they understand how these truths and commands are for their good and blessing and for Gods greater glory in the world.

A fixed, constant attention to the Promises, and a firm belief of them,

would prevent solicitude and anxiety about the concerns of this life. It would keep the mind quiet and composed in every change, and support and keep our sinking spirits under the several troubles of life . . . Christians deprive themselves of their most solid comforts by their unbelief, and forgetfulness of Gods Promises. For there is no extremity so great, but there are Promises suitable to it, and abundantly sufficient for our relief in it. J. I. Packer quoting Samuel Clark, Knowing God, pg. 115

Deuteronomy 6:4-9

Bible story Time: (15 minutes) Teacher Note: Make sure the children see you reading the Treasure Story, Deuteronomy 6:4-9, from Gods Word. Explain the importance of Gods Word being the very words God speaks. The Bible is truth and used to help us know God better. god is one god (Deuteronomy 6:4). He is the only God. There is no other God but Him. Because of this truth (that god is one god), he has told us to love him with all of our hearts, minds and strength. How do we love God with our hearts? Can we hug God or wrap our arms around Him? How can we show God and others that we love Him (through obedience, worship, praying, giving, serving)? How do we love God with our minds? The Bible tells us to think about good things, to think on things that are true. Philippians 4:8: . . . Whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things. Colossians 3:2: Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth. How do we love God with all of our strength? Does it take a lot of effort and strength to love God? Is it like lifting heavy objects? Have all the children flex their muscles. We are to talk and think about god at all timeswhen we get up in the morning, when we go to bed at night, when we walk and when we sit. That covers everything, doesnt it? Give children the Morning and Evening worksheet (see resources). They can color the sun and the moon as you talk about ways they can think about God in the morning and in the evening. Morning: Thank God for a good nights sleep. Thank God for another day to live. Thank God for the sky and the sun. Thank God for a bed to sleep in and a roof over your head. Pray that He would give you a good day. Pray that you would be obedient today. Evening: Thank God for a good day. Thank God for the food you ate and the times you got to learn and play today. Thank God for a bed to sleep in and pajamas. Thank God for rest and sleep. Pray that He would give you a good nights sleep. Pray that you wouldnt have nightmares. Does not this [Deuteronomy 6:5] show what is the very

nature of God? There was never an earthly prince or king, whom I have heard of, in whose statute book it was written, Thou shalt love the king. No; it is only in the statute book of Him who is the Lord of life and love that we read such a command as this. To my mind it seems a very blessed privilege for us to be permitted to love One so great as God is. Here it is we find our heaven. It is a command, but we regard it rather as a loving, tender invitation to the highest bliss. Charles Spurgeon, Devotional Thoughts on the Bible, pgs. 188-189

Deuteronomy 6:4-9

We are to talk and think about god at all timeswhen we get up in the morning, when we go to bed at night, when we walk and when we sit. That covers everything, doesnt it? Give children the 24 worksheet (see resources). Have the children fill in the inside of the numbers with ways they can know, love, learn about, obey and have fun with God every hour of every day. Examples: Eating food, sleeping, getting clean, being obedient, obeying your parents, playing with friends in a way that is pleasing to God, doing your homework, etc. Encourage the children to be specific in their answers. Supplies Needed: 24 worksheet, pencils

Treasure Verse learning activity: (5 minutes) Pass out copies of the Mezuzah resource page (see resources) to the children. Teacher Note: Refer back to the For Your Edification section and explain to your children about the mezuzah. Have them write Deuteronomy 6:4-5 on the inside of the mezuzah. They can take this paper home with them and hang it on the outside of their door to their room or even the front door of their home. Supplies Needed: Mezuzah resource page, pencils

Reinforcement activity: (10 minutes) Give children a half sheet of construction paper and a marker. Have the children write these words on their papers: LOvE, LISTEN, TALK, WALK, SLEEP, AWAKE. Remind them of the lesson as you talk through these words. Encourage them to write one thing they can do this week to help them obey these words that the Lord commands them to do. For example: SLEEP, say a prayer before they go to bed or LISTEN, play a CD of the Bible being read aloud or someone singing Scripture songs. Supplies Needed: Half sheets of construction paper, markers

Closing activity: (10 minutes) Explain to the children that phylacteries (pronounced fih LAK tuh rees) are small boxes with Old Testament verses enclosed in them: Jews strapped them to their foreheads and left arms when they prayed (Holman Illustrated Bible Dictionary for Kids, pg. 144). Tell them that young Jewish men today still wear these boxes. Give the children a piece of yarn, shoestring, or leather to represent the part they would wear on the left arm. Have them wrap it around their arm. Tie a string around the box the children decorated earlier (with tape or glue) and tie it around their foreheads. My Mission: (10 minutes)

How can we love Gods Word more in our everyday lives? We can memorize it. We can also post sticky notes with Scripture on our bathroom mirror to see every day. What about writing Scripture verses on your school folders? What ideas do you have? In what tangible ways can we show the world that we love God and treasure Christ above all else? Obeying your parents is one way. What about giving to those in need like the poor or to orphans (instead of saving our money to buy toys and more stuff ). What ideas do you have?

Prayer Time:

(5 minutes)

Encourage students to pray aloud. Pray that they would know how to make God number one in their lives and that they wouldnt worship anything else. Also pray that they would love God and obey God and His Word in everything they do. Teacher Note: You can also write out these different prayer points and pass them out to individual students. Then ask the students to pray for the request they received.

Explain that by a young age, Jewish boys and girls would have that memorized this Scripture passage. These children would have it repeated in their homes twice a day and more on special holidays. What does this passage tell us about God? god is one god (Deuteronomy 6:4). He is the only God. There is no other God but Him. What gods are there in your life or in the lives of your friends (sports, relationships, academics, having fun, being popular)? How do these gods take away from your time and attention that is supposed to be for the only God? What are we commanded to do as Jesus followers? Because of this truth (that god is one god), he has told us to love him with all of our hearts, minds and strength. How do we love God with our hearts? How can we show God and others that we love Him (through obedience, worship, praying, giving, serving)? God Is One God

Deuteronomy 6:4-9

deuteronomy 6:4-9 is the anchor passage of the Jewish faith because of the truth it exclaims about god: He is the One True God. This truth is not just found in Deuteronomy, but throughout the Bible. Look up these passages to see the cohesiveness of the Word of God: 1 Timothy 2:1-6: First of all, then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for all people, for kings and all who are in high positions, that we may lead a peaceful and quiet life, godly and dignified in every way. This is good, and it is pleasing in the sight of God our Savior, who desires all people to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth. For there is one God, and there is one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus, who gave Himself as a ransom for all, which is the testimony given at the proper time. 1 Corinthians 8:1-6: Now concerning food offered to idols: we know that all of us possess knowledge. This knowledge puffs up, but love builds up. If anyone imagines that he knows something, he does not yet know as he ought to know. But if anyone loves God, he is known by God. Therefore, as to the eating of food offered to idols, we know that an idol has no real existence, and that there is no God but one. For although there may be so-called gods in heaven or on earthas indeed there are many gods and many lordsyet for us there is one God, the Father, from whom are all things and for whom we exist, and one Lord, Jesus Christ, through whom are all things and through whom we exist. Exodus 20:1-6: And God spoke all these words, saying, I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery. You shall have no other

gods before me. You shall not make for yourself a carved image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth. You shall not bow down to them or serve them, for I the LORD your God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and the fourth generation of those who hate me, but showing steadfast love to thousands of those who love me and keep my commandments. Isaiah 45:14-18: Thus says the Lord: The wealth of Egypt and the merchandise of Cush, and the Sabeans, men of stature, shall come over to you and be yours; they shall follow you; they shall come over in chains and bow down to you. They will plead with you, saying: Surely God is in you, and there is no other, no god besides Him. Truly, you are a God who hides Himself, O God of Israel, the Savior. All of them are put to shame and confounded; the makers of idols go in confusion together. But Israel is saved by the Lord with everlasting salvation; you shall not be put to shame or confounded to all eternity. For thus says the Lord, who created the heavens (He is God!), who formed the earth and made it (He established it; He did not create it empty, He formed it to be inhabited!): I am the Lord, and there is no other. Young Jewish children were expected to have the shema passage memorized at a very early age. how did they do that? They had it repeated to them twice a day and it was constantly talked about in their homes. The Apostle Paul, who was raised Jewish, would have memorized Deuteronomy 6:4-9 soon after his sixth birthday. Far more impressively, he also memorized Psalms 113-118! explains Beth Moore in To Live Is Christ, Imagine all six of these psalms being

seared into your soul in childhood! Being a Hebrew was not just a religion; Judaism wasnt even just a way of life. Being Hebrew defined who you were, how you thought, what you felt . . . [Paul] had little choice but to meditate on the law both day and night just to prepare for the following days lessons (pg. 16). In the second Treasure story passage, why does it say that we are given these testimonies, statutes and rules? (Give students time to answer. If they need help, the answer is located in Deuteronomy 6:24.) Testimony Time: What can you brag on God about this week? How has God provided for you, come through for you, revealed Himself to you, surprised you? Psalm 19:7-11: The law of the LORD is perfect, reviving the soul; the testimony of the LORD is sure, making wise the simple; the precepts of the LORD are right, rejoicing the heart; the commandment of the LORD is pure, enlightening the eyes; the fear of the LORD is clean, enduring forever; the rules of the LORD are true, and righteous altogether. More to be desired are they than gold, even much fine gold; sweeter also than honey and drippings of the honeycomb. Moreover, by them is your servant warned; in keeping them there is great reward. The following descriptions are actions the Word says the Word of God does and what our response should be. If you have time, show this two-minute video that illustrates these verses. http://vimeo.com/15408136 What did god want us to do with these laws (deuteronomy 6:24)? First, obey the commandments. Second, we are to fear our God. What does it mean to fear God? John 14:15: If you love me, you will keep my commandments. John 14:21: Whoever has my commandments and keeps them, he it is who loves me. And he who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I will love him and manifest myself to him. John 15:10: If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love, just as I have kept my Fathers commandments and abide in His love. Psalm 25:12: Who is the man who fears the LORD? Him will he instruct in the way that He should choose. Psalm 34:11-14: Come, O children, listen to me; I will teach you the fear of the LORD. What man is there who desires life and loves many days, that he may see good? Keep your tongue from evil and your lips from speaking deceit. Turn away from evil and do good; seek peace and pursue it. Psalm 86:11: Teach me your way, O LORD, that I may walk in your truth; unite my heart to fear your name. Proverbs 1:7: The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge; fools despise wisdom and instruction.

Proverbs 3:5-7: Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make straight your paths. Be not wise in your own eyes; fear the LORD, and turn away from evil. Why are we given these laws (deuteronomy 6:24)? For our good. Rules are not meant to be a hindrance to our freedom, but an opportunity for us to treasure Christ, to pursue Him, and to be blessed. deuteronomy 5:28-33: And the LORD heard your words, when you spoke to me. And the LORD said to me, I have heard the words of this people, which they have spoken to you. They are right in all that they have spoken. Oh that they had such a mind as this always, to fear me and to keep all my commandments, that it might go well with them and with their descendants forever! Go and say to them, Return to your tents. But you, stand here by me, and I will tell you the whole commandment and the statutes and the rules that you shall teach them, that they may do them in the land that I am giving them to possess. You shall be careful therefore to do as the LORD your God has commanded you. You shall not turn aside to the right hand or to the left. You shall walk in all the way that the LORD your God has commanded you, that you may live, and that it may go well with you, and that you may live long in the land that you shall possess.

deuteronomy 8:1-10: The whole commandment that I command you today you shall be careful to do, that you may live and multiply, and go in and possess the land that the LORD swore to give to your fathers. And you shall remember the whole way that the LORD your God has led you these forty years in the wilderness, that He might humble you, testing you to know what was in your heart, whether you would keep His commandments or not. And He humbled you and let you hunger and fed you with manna, which you did not know, nor did your fathers know, that He might make you know that man does not live by bread alone, but man lives by every word that comes from the mouth of the LORD. Your clothing did not wear out on you and your foot did not swell these forty years. Know then in your heart that, as a man disciplines his son, the LORD your God disciplines you. So you shall keep the commandments of the LORD your God by walking in His ways and by fearing Him. For the LORD your God is bringing you into a good land, a land of brooks of water, of fountains and springs, flowing out in the valleys and hills, a land of wheat and barley, of vines and fig trees and pomegranates, a land of olive trees and honey, a land in which you will eat bread without scarcity, in which you will lack nothing, a land whose stones are iron, and out of whose hills you can dig copper. And you shall eat and be full, and you shall bless the LORD your God for the good land He has given you.

connecting church and home

As you open up Gods Word, who do you find that God has put in place to be the primary discipler of children? God gave parents the primary discipleship role. The peak of this teaching is called the Shema and is found in Deuteronomy 6:4-9. To this day, Jewish families quote this passage twice daily. Before there were churches, Sunday School classes, and youth groups, God entrusted parents with the privilege to teach their children. This command hasnt changed. There is no Shema version 2.0. Teaching our children about the Lord is our privilege and responsibility as parents.

connect
Gods plan is for parents to disciple and train up their own children in the Word of God and ways of God. This is a command with a promise. Psalm 78:5-7 says, He established a testimony in Jacob and appointed a law in Israel, which He commanded our fathers to teach to their children, that the next generation might know them, the children yet unborn, and arise and tell them to their children, so that they should set their hope in God and not forget the works of God, but keep His commandments. One of the promises of this verse can be found in Proverbs 22:6: Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it. One way to teach your children the ways of God is by sharing your testimony with them. Have your children heard your testimony? If not, then perhaps today would be a great time to share it. Treasure Verse: Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is one. You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might. And these words that I command you today shall be on your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise. You shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes. You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates (Deuteronomy 6:4-9).
