My talk about my own research 18 June 2011 PRESENTOR: MR. JOHN STEPHENS
1. The scope of my research:
The families I am researching are the following: CAMPHER STEPHENS NELSON VERMEULEN

2. The family I started with:

Because I am a Stephens I started researching the STEPHENS family. It was easy starting as I had attended the Beginners Course in Genealogy and knew that I should start with MYSELF. EASY, I thought. My father and mother I could add. Their fathers and mothers I could add. But there it came to a standstill. Who was my great grandfather on my fathers side? I didnt have a clue! Nobody in the whole Stephens family could tell me what his name was or who my great grandmother was! Fair enough. This is a dead end. So, keep the Stephens forbears on ice and continue down the line. This was easier, so I got stuck in and worked on the downward line. Fine, but it also has its problems. Even my own sisters and my brother and their offspring did not co-operate. Its still a struggle to get all the data from them. Because Im normally not very patient, I decided to give my mothers side of the family a go.

3. The CAMPHER family:

This went easier. I could add my mothers father and mother; my great grandfather and great grandmother. I could even add my mothers mothers father and mother, but not further than that. Fair enough, they were ROBERTS and can stand over in the meantime. But I was now stuck on the Campher great grandfather and mother. Who were their parents and those before them? Yes, there were the SAG books to assist me, but this also had its own problems. According to these SAG books the first Campher to come to South Africa, was Lourens CAMPHER. Aha! Got you! Lets follow this line from Lourens Campher. Fortunately he had only one son, Cornelis. But Cornelis had a number of children and I tried several possibilities. After much trial and error I found my way. But I am still struggling.

4. Some problems I also encountered:

4.1 Who must you trust and believe?
Some say that Lourens Camphers wife was ANSELA van de Kaap, and that she was a free slave. 2

The great historian, Theal, however, states in one of his works that farms were awarded to the first lot of settlers and that Lourens Campher was one of the first to be given a farm in 1690 in the Stellenbosch district. He then adds: Al de vrouwen waren van Hollandse geboorte. This must surely include Ansela. How can she be a free slave and at the same time born Hollands? I tried Lucass data and there it states that Ansela was born in 1665 in Nederland! Now, who must I believe?

4.2 Can you rely on the data on tombstones?

4.2.1 My great grandfather Christoffel Johannes CAMPHER: My wife and I visited the old family graveyard in Kommandodrift where both are buried. The inscription on his stone says that he was born 27 October 1830, where as SAG says he was baptised in Beaufort West on 26 December 1828. Which date is the correct date? And the spelling of his name on the tombstone is definitely incorrect. It is spelt: Chirstoffel Johnnes CAMPHER! This cannot be right! And my great grandmothers name is spelt Eliza Betha Maria Gertruia Campher ( Born Joubert). This is surely also incorrect. 4.2.2 My Uncles youngest daughter: Susara Jacoba CAMPHER: She was born 26 May 1947 and died 26 March 1949 but her name on the tombstone is given as Sarha Campher. This spelling is clearly also incorrect. The same spelling but a different spelling of the surname: Around the corner from our home we found this little cemetery where someone with exactly the same name as my great grandfather, Christoffel Johannes, is buried. But, the surname is spelt KAMFFER and not CAMPHER! Can this be coincidence, we wondered? Is there a connection between the two? Are we related? In the beginning of 2010 professor Louis KAMFER in Port Elizabeth, published a family history of the CAMPHER/KAMFER/KAMFFER-family. I bought his book and immediately all became clear to me. This man and my great grandfather are both my relatives!

5. Conclusion:
These are only a very few of the things that I have experienced in trying to research some of my families. I have not even mentioned the fact that I had to learn (and is still busy learning) how to operate and use the computer.

1. Terminology a. Pages vs Leaves (Bladsye & Blaaie) b. Font size in points, or pts c. Landscape vs Portrait d. CMYK (print) & RGB (PC monitor) e. Scoring = Creasing 2. Fonts a. Avoid more than 2 or 3 fonts; rather use different sizes of the same font, bold, underline or italics. b. Avoid unusual fonts, except for special cases, and then be able to supply printer with font file. c. Common/usual fonts for easy reading. Note how the font size appears to change even though all the bullets below are in 12pt. Note also how the spacing between letters differ, and before an unusual font is used, check how capitals, bullets, italics, bold is presented. Some unusual fonts, for example have no bold versions, or no numbers. i. Arial ii. Courier New iii. Garamond iv. Georgia v. Tahoma vi. Times New Roman vii. Verdana 3. Sizes & Layout a. Landscape & square - typical for coffee table books. b. Portrait - typical for reference books, technical material. c. A5, A4, A3, 210 x 210, 300 x 300 d. Text normally justified: Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipisicing elit, sed do eiusmod tempor incididunt ut labore et dolore magna aliqua. Ut enim ad minim veniam, quis nostrud exercitation ullamco proident, sunt in culpa qui officia deserunt mollit anim id est laborum e. Or justified, in columns Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipisicing elit, sed do eiusmod tempor incididunt ut labore et dolore magna aliqua. Ut enim ad minim veniam, quis nostrud exercitation ullamco laboris nisi ut aliquip ex ea commodo consequat. Duis aute irure dolor in reprehenderit in voluptate velit esse cillum dolore eu fugiat nullaid est laborum voluptate velit esse cillum dolore

f. Margins must allow for final trim cuts on 3 sides, and must take the binding method into consideration: too close to the spine and text may be trapped by the binding, if the binding is fold and staple, then there will be creeping of the text to the outside edge. Normally 20mm margins will be sufficient. g. Colour approximately 3 to 6 times more expensive than B/W. h. A document with a mixture of colour and B/W pages will attract collating charges. i. Photographs: i. Always in CMYK. Make sure that the converted image is viewed and if necessary, colourcorrected before giving to the Printer to avoid unpleasant surprises. ii. High resolution to get crisp reproduction (72dpi minimum, 150dpi preferable.) 4

Fold-outs can have a maximum size of A3 (420mm x 297mm).

4. Binding Types a. A3 to A4, or A4 to A5, fold and saddle-stitch. i. Orientation: A3 to A4: Portrait only, A4 to A5, 201 x 210: Landscape or Portrait. ii. Leaves = Pages 4, otherwise blank pages. iii. Max leaves = 20 (80 pages) on 80gsm Bond. iv. Cover can be printed and folded separately, and is normally on thicker stock than the text stock. v. Book can be re-stapled after replacing leaves, but almost guaranteed that previous staple holes will be visible. vi. Leave enough outside margin for trimming (20mm). vii. Cost of binding (folding & stapling, no scoring) = R2.25 b. Plastic Ringbinding. i. Size & Orientation: A3, A4, A5, 300 x 300, 210 x 210, landscape or portrait (A3 = landscape only) ii. Leaves = Pages 2. iii. Max leaves = 200 on 80gsm Bond (Unwieldy). iv. Cover normally just clear plastic (can be coloured or frosted) with a white backing board (backing board can be coloured to match plastic comb colour.) v. Binding can be opened to replace leaves. vi. Cost of binding 200 leaves (excluding A3) = R21.50 (standard covers) vii. Max leaves for A3 binding = 120 = R31.00 (standard covers) c. Wiro binding. i. Size & Orientation: A3, A4, A5, 300 x 300, 210 x 210, landscape or portrait (A3 = landscape only) ii. Leaves = Pages 2. iii. Max leaves = 115 on 80gsm Bond. iv. Cover normally just clear plastic (can be coloured or frosted) with a white or black backing board to match wiro comb colour. v. Binding can NOT be opened to replace leaves. vi. Cost of binding 115 leaves (excluding A3) = R42.25 (standard covers) vii. Max leaves for A3 binding = 120 = R138.95 (standard covers) d. Interscrews i. Size & Orientation: A3, A4, A5, 300 x 300, 210 x 210, landscape or portrait. ii. Leaves = Pages 2. iii. Max leaves = Dependant on screw height. iv. Cover normally just clear plastic (can be coloured or frosted) with a white or coloured backing board. v. Binding can be opened to replace leaves. vi. Cost of binding = R5 to R10 per screw e. ibiClick i. Size & Orientation: A3, A4, A5, 300 x 300, 210 x 210, landscape or portrait (A3 = landscape only) ii. Leaves = Pages 2. iii. Stretched canvas. iv. Pull-up banner.

Dit sal gedoen word deur die neem van fotos van die grafstene en moontlik die begraafplaas register. 15 Oktober 2011: 14.00: Ned. Geref. Kerk Ontdekkerskruin: Daar sal n werkswinkel aangebied word wat gelei word deur die senior en baie ervare genealo in ons Tak. John Stephens sal die metodiek daarvan uitwerk en later vir ons bekendstel. 19 November 2011: 14.00: Ned. Geref. Kerk Ontdekkerskruin: Afsluitingsgeleentheid. Dit sal die viering van ons Tak se 10de Verjaarsdag wees.

++++++++++++++++++ FAMILIEBYBELS JOHANNESBURG OPENBARE BIBLIOTEEK Neels Coertse, Lucas Rinken en Giel Nel het Vrydagmiddag 22 Julie 2011 by die Africana Afdeling van die Johannesburg Openbare Biblioteek gaan besoek afl. Hulle het die goedkeuring van die Hoofbibliotekaris, Mnr. Alistair Marshall gehad om die genealogiese inligting in hierdie Biblioteek se besit te fotografeer; hy het ook goedkeuring daaraan geheg dat ons dit op die eGGSA se webtuiste kan publiseer sonder enige kostes daaraan verbonde.

Dit was n plesier om met Mnr. Marshall te onderhandel hy het ook toegang tot sy biblioteek vir ons gerieflik gemaak. Ongelukkig kon hy nie teenwoordig wees met ons besoek nie. Ons het onbelemmerde toegang gehad. Ons s hiermee baie dankie aan Mnr. Marshall vir sy hulp en toestemming. Daar is heelwat Bybels op die Biblioteek se rakke, maar nie almal het inligting wat vir ons van belang is nie. Ons het slegs ongeveer 8 Bybels se inligting gefotografeer en dit moet nou verwerk word. Ek sal later n verslag daaroor publiseer. Hiermee n foto van Lucas en Giel in hierdie skatkis van inligting:

Ongelukkig het die Bybel in die foto geen genealogiese inligting gehad nie. Die Familiebybels waaruit ons inligting versamel het, verskyn op die regterkant van die foto.
