Vacuum Pumps Their Types And Uses

Vacuum pumps have been used in different places and served multiple functions over time. Since the invention of the first vacuum pump by Otto von Guericke in Germany in 1650, vacuum pumps have been used on large scale and small scale applications. Vacuum pumps unlike conventional pumps remove gas molecules from a sealed space or enclosure leaving a partial vacuum behind; making the vacuum pump an essential component in the manufacturing, pharmaceutical, electrical and food and beverage industry. Vacuum Pumps are used in a large variety of applications in multiple industries such as plastic molding processes, production of lamps, vacuum tubes, CRT displays; semiconductor processing, in the generation of glass coatings, milking, packaging and also in the aviation industry in building various components. But there are a variety of vacuum pumps available which help serve the different purposes in the industry. Some of the widely categorized ones are given below. Positive Displacement Pumps are the ones that work on the principle of an expanding vacuum chamber that forced gases or liquids to flow in and after sealing the cavity, to flow out into the atmosphere or reservoir. Screw pumps, Wankel pumps, piston pumps, rotary vane pumps are some examples of positive displacement pumps. Momentum Transfer Pumps on the other hand work with the help of blades rotating at a high speed which simply pull out the gas molecules from one chamber and exhaust them out through a tiny port out into the atmosphere or external chamber. A Turbomolecular pump is a good example of momentum transfer pumps wherein, gas molecules are accelerated from the vacuum side to the exhaust side (which is usually maintained at a reduced pressure by a positive displacement pump). Momentum transfer pumping is only possible below pressures of about 0.1 kPa. Such pumps though complex are used for demanding applications such as semiconductor fabrication equipment and liquid crystal display manufacturing devices. Entrapment Pumps on the other hand uses cooler temperatures or alternate gases to condense gas molecules which react and form a residue in an adsorbed state. Cryopumps and Ion pumps are examples of such pumps. Global Trust Enterprises is a general trading company in Dubai which is strategically based in the Jebel Ali Free Zone.
