oo many songs sing about summer lovin. I
sometimes wonder why nobody seems to have
the same expectations concerning matters
about love and ings in the winter as compared to
summer. When its cold, theres a greater need to
cuddle, no? Perhaps these days, with such prevalent
disillusionment and distrust amongst people, toilet-
trained dogs are better creatures to cuddle with. Even
better, learn from the wisdom of toddlers and cuddle
with your blankie.
Whoever or whatever you cuddle with, the torturous
weather in Singapore is a free (now, isnt that every
Singaporeans favourite word) ticket for a summer ride
all the time, and therefore the idea of summer lovin
ceases to exist because summer has lost any special
signicance to its name here.
is aint no bleak report though. As last issue showed,
people here are still able to boast of healthy sex (ok, call
it love if you want to) lives despite the horrid weather.
is holiday, take advantage of your newfound
knowledge, and take a breather from the emptiness of
the Singaporean rat-race lled life.
Whether youre running away from life (oh, all
those endless attempts!), or planning for a romantic
getaway with your honey bunny, well advise you on
some cheaper alternatives. Of course the simple rule
still sticks: no money, no honey. And by the way,
cheaper alternatives means no escape from the heat of
Southeast Asia. Just so you know.

n the Leonardo DiCaprio lm e Beach,
ailands Krabi was made the main seaside
feature, and the locals still havent stopped
talking about it, despite the show being almost
a decade old. Had Yao beach, where I parked
myself for all of 48 hours, was a slate grey
beach streaked with crab holes. At The Beach
Boutique Resort Krabi where I stayed, all 11
rooms oered were villas, lending an air of
much appreciated privacy & exclusivity for the
average Singaporean.
Isolated and unspoiled, it truly is a paradise. Hop
from the pool to the beach to the cosy eating
area where the food is all you would expect
from an authentic ai spot. Best of all, its only
a mere SGD98 a night. e villas with individual
pools cost slightly more, but why bother when
you can reign in the main pool anyway? I am
surreptitiously hinting at possible skinny-
dipping escapades in the middle of the night.
I am also abashedly hinting at the possibility
of pursuing the aforementioned activity in the
patch of ocean that you are master of at 3am at
this blissfully uninhabited beach.
Getting to Krabi town from the resort takes about
45 minutes to an hour by car or van. Having had
the opportunity to roam freely at their hawker
square, I discovered some highlights which
include pad thai (fried noodles), crispy pork
knuckle rice, coconut pancake and the cheap
mango shakes & coconut juices.
Another notable food-spot in Krabi is Ao Nang
Town. e best part about this place is that its
right next to the main bar lane. is narrow lane
lled with neon lights, bare skin, intoxicating
fumes, poles, cheap booze, exciting bars lined
up side by side and friendly kissable sta await
you on the avenue to dizzying heights.
Krabi is not as popular as Bangkok, but does
have its own charms and idiosyncrasies. Food
and accommodation are dirt-cheap, and the
place is well worth embracing as a destination
separate from the Bangkok adventure.

ack in the Army, a couple of
friends and I had too much leave
to clear towards the end of our
service a true sign of overworked,
dedicated and patriotic soldiers. Taking a
break from wearing green uniforms, we
booked ourselves a weekend getaway to
Bintan for a little peace and quiet.
Located an hour away by ferry from
Singapore, Bintan is peppered with
holiday resorts. ere are the exquisite
and luxurious country-club types; but for
budget-conscious travellers like us, we
looked up simpler ones that had fewer
facilities and were located at more remote
areas. From the ferry terminal, we took
an hour of a bumpy catered-ride to get to
our nal choice of the Bintan Agro Beach
Resort.
Sta greeted us earnestly before we were
led to a huge hill-top villa, and the stay
only cost SGD70 for a person per night.
You can forget about shopping though,
because theres only a convenience mart
and one miserable souvenir shop located
near the premises.
But having said that, the resort still has
its own attractions to boast about. It has
its own private beach and a sea sports
centre that supply kayaks, snorkelling
equipments and banana boat rides, as
well as the usual spa centre, swimming
pool and two restaurants. We spent hours
exploring nearby islands (Im not sure if
you call something 40x40m popping out
of the sea an island though), re-enacting
Baywatch on the beach volleyball courts,
roasting under the sun at the poolside,
enjoying traditional massages by the
beach, and indulging in seafood (trust
me, the butter-cereal squids were a surreal
experience) meals on a Kelong.
Time passed really slowly, and that was
a wonderful break for us. Spending less
than $300 for the trip, we managed to get
away from busy schedules and buzzing
calls, rejuvenating the mind and body. At
the end of it, we felt refreshed enough to
start yelling at recruits all over again.
