Using FreePDF XP XP
FreePDF XP is designed to create PDF Files. Principally this should work so:

With a Windows Printer a Postscript File will be written This Postscript File will be converted to PDF by GhostScript

Requirements FreePDF XP needs this:


Windows 2000, XP or Server 2003 The Windows Driver Library Driver.cab GhostScript (must be installed before FreePDF XP) Redmon (will be installed by FreePDF XP)

The FreePDF XP Assistant (fpAssist.exe) must be started at User-login. Please read at System requirements the full list of Requirements.

Creating PDF Files 1. File, Print, FreePDF XP To create a PDF File please choose File, Print and the FreePDF XP Printer in any Application. Please do not choose 'Printing to File'.

Then the FreePDF Assistant will rise a dialogue box.

Choose one of this Options now:

Send by Mail After creating a PDF, a new Email will be opened. Note: Read at System requirements, which Email Applications can be used with FreePDF XP.

Save As... Save the PDF File in any Location.

Send to Desktop The PDF File will be placed on your Desktop.

Add to next PDF The current Print-Job will be stored. Together with a following Print Job, the file will be created as a single PDF File.

Note:

If a Print job is already opened, in the Task bar a Icon is viewed. With a Click on this Icon, the Dialogue Box can be called back again.

2. Doubleckick a Postscript File If you doubleclick a Postscript File, FreePDF XP (FreePDF.exe) will be started.

Choose a PDF Profile. Then click 'Make PDF'. A Postscript File can be exported in some application. Also its possible, using 'Print to File' in any Postscript Printer driver, to get a Postscript File.. Note: Printer drivers of GDI and most of Ink Printers are not Postscript Drivers and not able to create Postscript files. Windows delivers some Postscript Printer drivers. Many of it has a name extension 'PS'. Quicksilver:Publish As replacement of Adobe Distiller (acrodist.exe) FreePDF.exe can be used with Quicksilver or Interleaf.

Configure FreePDF XP
After installing, FreePDF XP is ready for the most common cases. Ahead of it you can customize FreePDF XP in many ways. Configuration FreePDF XP can be configured in many ways. To configure FreePDF XP, please choose Edit, Options in FreePDF. Note: With the Link Edit Configuration in the Dialog Box the same Configuration will be opened.

You can configure this::

Identification This User name will be used as Creator-Name in each PDF File. A grey field means, the User name was insert automatically. You can set the username By User or By Computer. If you assign both, the By User Setting will be used.

Common Setting You can choose your preferred Language by each user profile. Note: It is simply possible to translate FreePDF XP. Please read the Link for this.

You can choose, whether you like to view GhostScript Messages in FreePDF XP. Only in special cases you should activate the Debug Mode. This will write the files C:\fpRedMon.log and on the Desktop fpAssist.log and FreePDF.log for the related Applications.

Folder Locations You can change the Folders for GhostScript and fpMailer. Also its possible, using a replacement for fpMailer.exe. Please assign it here. Note: A Replacement for fpMailer will be called like this: ProgramName.exe C:\folders\PDF File.pdf The Application should open a new Email with the PDF File attached. Read at System requirements, which Email Applications can be used with fpMailer.exe.

FreePDF XP Assistant / FreePDF XP Main Application You can disable some FreePDF XP functions if you like to. A grey Check box means, FreePDF XP is working normal. Disable a Check box to remove the Function or Element. Note: Read the FreePDF XP administration manual for detailed Information.

Profiles PDF Related Options are stored in Profiles: GhostScript Options (File Format, Resolution, ...) Command pre and post PDF Processing Insert Aquamarks Default Action for the FreePDF Assistant.

One Profile can be set as Default Profile. For each Profile you can add a special Printer, which uses the Default Action if set.

Profile settings Basic Options Starting with FreePDF XP 3.0, a Profile includes all settings for creating and managing PDF Files. A Profile can be stored per User or per Computer.

In most cases FreePDF will be used for creating PDF Files. For this the GhostScript Device 'pdfwrite' is used. Its also possible, create some image file formats. Please read the GhostScript Manual 'Devices.htm' for detailed Information about GhostScript Devices. If a image format is used, a image resolution can be set.. Always its possible to add simple GhostScript switches.

PDF General / PDF Pictures / PDF Encryption

All relevant GhostScript settings are placed on three Cards. Please read the GhostScript manual 'ps2pdf.htm' for detailed Information. In short the following hints:

If 128-Bit encryption is used, FreePDF XP automatically creates Acrobat 5 PDF Files, which are the minimum version for 128 bit. Always embed fonts, if the PDF File should be viewed on a different Computer. The Bitmap Font dpi is related to Bitmap characters only.

PDF Aquamarks Starting with FreePDF XP 3.0, a aquamark can be underlayed a new PDF File. Note: To use the Aquamark feature, PDFtk.exe must be stored at C:\Program Files\FreePDF_XP. Download this at http://www.accesspdf.com/index.php?topic=pdftk PDFtk is a open source product.

As a Aquamark a simple PDF File can be used. Just the 1st Page will be insert below each page of the PDF Print Job. This can be used i.e. for a PDF Output on a virtual page form.

Pre PDF Action / Post PDF Action Before and after the PDF Creation a command can be called.

This Command can run a Program or a .bat file, which runs a couple of commands. Note: The File name after the Command must be the same as before the call. Otherwise the PDF Process of FreePDF XP will no longer working well.

Examples: 1st: Solution: You like to save a Backup of each PDF Run the following .bat File like this: C:\Backup.bat %pdfFile %date %time The .Bat File includes: @echo off copy %1 C:\backup\%2%1

2nd:

You like to printout a copy of each PDF File.

Solution a: The Printer is a Postscript Printer Run this Pre PDF Action: Copy %psFile \\Printserver\PrinterShareName Solution b: The Printer is a non-Postscript Printer Run this Command as Post PDF Action: C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 7.0\Reader\AcroRd32.exe /t "%pdfFile "Windows Printer name" "x"

FreePDF Dialogue If a Printer is installed specially for this Profile, a default Action can be set. Note: This option only are used with a special Printer and will be unused if the profile is called without this Printer.

Choose one of this Actions:

Email Button / Save Button / Desktop Button / MultiDoc Button This button will be 'pressed' automatically. Note: If you use the MultiDoc Button as Default Action, the PDF only can finished by printing on a 2nd Printer.

Save to Folder The PDF will be stored in the selected Folder Location.

Save as fixed File name The PDF will be saved with a fixed File name. Please enter the full Path / File name.

Setup
System requirements Basic System To use FreePDF XP the following is needed:

Windows XP or Windows 2000 GhostScript (min. 7.00, AFPL GhostScript 8.14 is recommended) GhostScript Fonts (will be installed with GhostScript) For Setup and Configuring common settings: Administration Permissions For installing the Printer Driver.cab. Driver.cab is a Windows System file. It contains several Windows-Included Drivers. The Driver.cab usually is installed at C:\WINDOWS\Driver Cache\i386. On some OEM installed Systems, the Driver.cab is stored under C:\i386. If this Directory is removed by the User, the FreePDF XP Setup is unable to install the Printer or asking for a Windows CD-ROM. To install FreePDF anyway, install a Printer 'Apple Color LW 12/660' by hand and rerun the FreePDF XP Setup.

Email To use the Email Button, one of the following Email Applications are needed:

Microsoft Outlook / Outlook Express Mozilla Mail / Thunderbird / Netscape Mail (ShellMail.exe will be used by default) Tobit David (with installed dvsmapi.exe) Lotus Notes Novell Groupwise

Possibly other MAPI conform Applications also will work.. If your Email Application do not work correctly with fpMailer.exe or ShellMail.exe, Try to use Mapimail.exe with the Download Link. Extension To use the Aquamark Feature, PDFtk.exe must be installed. Please follow the Instructions by the Profile Editor.

Not included To installing FreePDF XP GhostScript 7.xx or 8.xx must be installed. More information about GhostScript you get on www.ghostscript.org. To view PDF Files, you need a Reader - for example Adobe Acrobat Reader. Please download it at www.adobe.de. Installation The installation works in the following steps: Creating a FreePDF_XP folder under Program Files. Copy all files to Program Files\FreePDF_XP Register the extensions .ps and .prn to freepdf.exe Autostart fpAssist.exe by enter it in Hkey_Local_Machine\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run Registering the Uninstall entry in Control \ Software Creating a FreePDF Group in the start menu Installing Redmon Creating printer port PDF1 Installing Printer FreePDF XP

The Setup Program is designed for Windows 2000 and Windows XP. To run the Setup under Server 2003 there must be the file MSVBVM50.dll copied to System32 first. Deinstallation of FreePDF For deinstallation please use the Control panel, Software. After the Uninstall there is a directory Program Files\FreePDF_XP witch includes the Uninstall Program fpsetup.exe. Its save then to delete this folder.
