Plagiarism: myths and truths

Matthew de Klerk Plagiarism is arguably the most seriously regarded and taboo offence at Rhodes University. Plagiarism is defined as using another persons work without proper acknowledgement, and pretending that it is ones own, and amounts, in effect, to academic theft. As a first year, the first few lectures and tutorials in the majority of courses at Rhodes will be devoted to scaring you into taking plagiarism seriously and learning to avoid it. All assignments are usually submitted with an accompanying Declaration of Plagiarism form, whilst some courses go as far as making you submit assignments to the online plagiarism detection service turnitin.com. Usually if you are caught stealing someone elses intellectual property, the infringing assignment in question is given 0% on the spot, whilst some departments take away your coveted Duly Performed (DP) certificate (without which you cannot write exams). However, this is usually tutor or department dependant: some tutors will mark and hand back an assignment even if it contains no references; some will mark you down for not referencing every idea. However, from personal experience, plagiarism is something that does not need to be feared. As long as ideas and statements are referenced correctly (which is easy enough to do once you learn), you should be safe from punitive measures. Some of the measures in place (whilst they may have their merits in certain cases) are almost Shock and Awe, or overkill. Since student papers are not automatically added to the turnitin.coms paper repository, similarities- even major ones- are often undetected, and even if they are, changing the word order or sentence structure is often enough to drop the similarity index to acceptable levels. Nonetheless, one should not just copypaste their friends work and hand it in as their own: vigilant tutors and markers are a lot harder to fool than a simple website.
