1 Task, Function and Design

1.1 Task
A failure-free operation of the power plant without interference by corrosion and / or deposits on the
components and in the systems of the steam water cycle demands the compliance of specified quality
requirements on steam and water.
These requirements are based on standard guidelines (e.g. VGB Directive) for power plant operation in
order to provide preservation of efficiency, operational availability and lifetime of the power plant and
will be achieved by:

– Operation with salt-free feed water,


– Alkalizing of water and steam,
– Oxidizing conditions, if applicable
– Operation of the condensate polishing plant (CPP).

The steam water cycle is operated with oxygenated treatment (OT) by continuous and intermittent
dosing ammonia as volatile alkalizing agent and oxygen as oxidant. During start and shut down AVT is
used by dosing of ammonia only.
This description has to be read in conjunction with the work report
“Chemistry of the Steam Water Cycle and Auxiliary Systems” (UNID 502893087) and the
system description “Steam/Water Sampling System” (Unid 448243151).

1.2 Function

1.2.1 Ammonia Dosing System QCD


The dosage into the condensate system either directly downstream the CPP (LDK) or, in case the CPP
is e.g. out of operation, into the main condensate downstream the CEP (LCA) is carried out by means
of automatic dosing pump operation for the OT as well as for the AVT.
An additional dosage during start-up operation (AVT) is necessary in the feedwater system.
In normal operation (OT), the dosage is only required during degassing of the feedwater tank.
For wet boiler preservation concentrated ammonia can be fed directly from the IBC Container into the
condensate system. This function is controlled manually.

1.2.2 Oxygen Dosing System QCL


In order to establish a permanent passivation of the steam water cycle oxygen is added while OT
operation mode. For this purpose the oxygen is fed into the main condensate system LCA downstream
the condensate extraction pumps. An oxygen concentration of ~ 0.05 to 0.1 mg/l in the water and steam
cycle shall be established.

In normal operation (OT), an additional dosage in the feedwater system LAB is required during
degassing of the feedwater tank.

1.3 Design

1.3.1 Ammonia Dosing System QCD


Mechanical Design
The dosing station is completely skid mounted and located outside of the UMC building.
The IBC Container and dilution tank are designed for operation at atmospheric pressure. The dosing
pumps designed as hydraulic actuated diaphragm type with internal relief valves to limit the delivery
pressure of each dosing line. The delivery rate of the dosing pumps can be adapted to operating
requirements by speed control.
The pipework between dosing pumps and injection points is designed to withstand the maximum design
pressure of the connected systems. Each dosing line is equipped with a stand-by dosing pump. A
bladder-type pulsation damper is installed to minimize pulsation during pump operation. The materials
of tanks, pipes and components are resistant to subjected medium.
The dosing skid has to be protected by a sun roof by the client.
In order to collect any leakages resulting from exceptional operating conditions a drip pan is located
under the frame.
Process Design
The approx. 0,5 % ammonia solution is continuously dosed into the condensate system LDK
downstream CPP or in the main condensate downstream CEP LCA during OT and AVT operation. The
SC of the condensate downstream the CEP serves as variable for pump speed control. Flow rate shall
be used as disturbance variable.*)
*) Exception: In cases where the CPP but not the CEP is operation (during commissioning for instance),
than the dosing is done in accordance to the flow rate of the CPP, as the main condensate pH is not
available.
Set points should be
1.0 S/cm at OT (pH value 8.4)
5.5 S/cm at AVT (pH value 9.3)
Further it is dosed into the feedwater downstream the feedwater tank. The SC of the HP FW upstream
of HP FW pumps serves as variable for pump speed control. Flow rate shall be used as disturbance
variable.
Set point should be
5.5 S/cm at AVT (pH value 9.3)
In case of malfunction a general fault signal will be released to the CCR. Then a manual switch-over
from the operating pump to the stand-by pump has to be carried out.
The commercially available ammonia solution with a concentration of about 24 % is provided in a 1000 l
intermediate bulk container (IBC).

The preparation of the 0,5 % ammonia solution is carried out in a 500 l dilution tank automatically. For
this purpose the concentrated ammonia is fed from the IBC container into the dilution tank by means of
an ejector pump with demineralized water as pressure water. The resulting concentration can be
adjusted by a valve in the concentrated ammonia line.
The IBC Container and the dilution tank for ammonia are provided with a low-level-cut-out to protect the
dosing pump against dry running.
The entire open and closed loop control is designed in black box technique.
The dosing system can be operated manually from the local switch board.

1.3.2 Oxygen Dosing System QCL


Mechanical Design
The dosing station is completely skid mounted and located outside the UMC building. The pipe work
and the pressure reducing facilities are designed to withstand the maximum design pressure of the
connected systems as well as of the oxygen cylinders. Safety valves are provided on the discharge side
of the pressure reducing facilities in order to limit the pressure within the dosing lines. In order to
stabilize the pressure in the dosing line during dosing a back-pressure regulator is directly installed at
the injection point. Non-return valves are provided in the dosing line to prevent back flow from the
connected system to the dosing system.
The dosing skid has to be protected by a sun roof by the client.
Oxygen bottles are provided redundant by means of an automatic switching facility each. The required
bottles 2 x 200 bar/g is located in a separate bottle cabinet.
Process Design
The oxygen is continuously fed into the main condensate system LCA downstream condensate
extraction pumps and during degassing of the feedwater tank into the feedwater system LAB. The
dosing rate is controlled by the oxygen concentration in the main condensate and the HP feedwater
respectively.
Set point should be 0.09 mg/l at OT
In addition the actual flow rate of condensate/HP feedwater is used as disturbance variable in parallel to
the regulation depending on the oxygen concentration. This causes an immediate scaling of the control
range of the mass flow regulator in relation to the variation in flow.
The oxygen supply is provided by two oxygen cylinders in a cabinet incl. automatic switch-over facility.
The entire open and closed loop control is designed in black box technique. The dosing system can be
operated manually from the local switch board.
Oxygen dosing will be set in auto operation mode (signal 10QCL00EE005M) when the steam water
cycle is set in OT mode. Setting the steam water cycle from AVT to OT mode is carried out when cation
conductivity of Main condensate downstream CEP has reached a level of <0.15
(10QUC10CQ002).

2 Modes of Operation

2.1 Preparations
For purposes of filling and deaeration please refer to operating and maintenance instructions of the
dosing stations.

2.2 Interactions with other Systems


In order to protect the connected systems from undue high pressure all installed diaphragm pumps are
equipped with integrated or external pressure relief valves in order to limit the discharge pressure of
dosing pumps of the respective dosing system. The pumps are also provided with integrated non return
valves to prevent back flow from the connected system. In case of malfunction a common fault alarm is
indicated in the CCR.
The ammonia dosing will be automatically stopped if the main condensate flow (for LCA/LDK) or the
feedwater flow (for LAB) drops below a minimum. After exceeding this predetermined set point again
the dosing into the main condensate system will be restarted automatically.
If the condensate extraction pumps run in min flow operation or are out of operation indicated by the
mass flow in the main condensate but the CPP is still in operation the ammonia dosing into condensate
system LDK will be controlled proportional to the mass flow through the condensate polishing plant.
If the CPP is not in operation indicated by the mass flow of the CPP line or if CPP dosing request is
switched off (signal 30LDY00EE015M), but the condensate extraction pumps are in operation indicated
by the mass flow in the main condensate the dosing remains active with the actual flow rate of the CEP
Cond Flow as disturbance value.
The dosing pumps are frequency controlled by the specific conductivity and the actual flow rate of
condensate or feed water as disturbance value.

2.3 Start-up and Shutdown


Before startup of the system it has to be ensured that the valves in the discharge and suction lines are
open in accordance with the operating and maintenance instructions and the system is filled with the
dosing solution.
Before longer standstill period (several weeks) the whole system should be emptied and be rinsed with
demineralized water.
The oxygen system should be vented.

2.4 Normal Operation

2.4.1 Ammonia Dosing System QCD


The dosing system is designed for continuous dosing into the condensate downstream CPP or into the
main condensate downstream CEP for initial filling of HRSG only, depending on the specific
conductivity of main condensate CEP or HP feed water during AVT and OT treatment.
During AVT further continuous dosing into the feed water is done while normal operation is performed.

The respective system related flow rate shall be use as disturbance variable in parallel to the specific
conductivity depending dosing.

Filling
The concentrated ammonia solution is fed into the ammonia dilution tank by means of an ejector pump
with demineralized water as pressure water.

2.4.2 Oxygen Dosing System QCL


The dosing system is designed for continuous dosing into the main condensate piping system LCA
depending on the oxygen concentration of the main condensate. The condensate flow rate is used as
disturbance variable for the regulation.
Additional dosing is performed in the feedwater system LAB if the feedwater tank vent is open.

2.5 Abnormal Operational Occurrences


If one of the ammonia dosing pumps should fail, the system will initiate an alarm in the CCR. In this
case a manual changeover to the corresponding stand-by pump has to be carried out.
If one of the oxygen cylinders are finished the system will automatically switch to the corresponding
stand-by cylinder.

2.6 Closed and Open Loop Controls, Interlocking

2.6.1 Closed and Open Loop Controls


Ammonia Dosing QCD
The main dosage into the condensate downstream CPP or into the main condensate downstream CEP
is carried out by means of dosing pumps for the OT as well as the AVT.
The dosage is controlled by specific conductivity, while OT with set point 1.0 S/cm (pH 8.4) and
5.5 S/cm (pH 9.3) while AVT.
The black box internal set points for OT and AVT are activated by the incoming switch-over signal
30QCL00EE005N from CCR. When this signal is enabled than the ammonia dosing system will go in
OT operation. For this purpose the required flow rates of the dosing pumps 30QCD30AP005 or

30QCD31AP005 will be reduced by the frequency.


Additionally ammonia is dosed into feed water during AVT to keep the resulting pH above 9.3.
The ammonia dosing will be automatically stopped if the
- main condensate flow (30LCA20CF005M)
drops below a minimum (setpoint < 10 kg/s). After exceeding this minimum condensate flow again the
dosing into the main condensate system will be started automatically. The delivery rate is controlled by
the specific conductivity of the main condensate downstream condensate extraction pumps
(30QUC10CQ001M).
The related ammonia dosing line will be automatically stopped if the
- 30QCL00EE001N is disabled (O2 value too high)
- main condensate flow (30LCA20CF005M)
- HP feed water flow (30LAB20FF955M)
drops below a minimum (setpoint < 10Kg/s). After exceeding this minimum condensate flow and feed
water flows respectively again the dosing into the main condensate system and LP/IP feed water
system will be started automatically while 30QCL00EE005N is enabled.
The dosage is mainly in the LDK system with the exception:
For initial filling of HRSG indicated by the mass flow (30LDK25CF005M), and operation of Condensate
extraction pumps indicated by the mass flow (30LCA20CF005M), or the CPP is not in operation.
In these cases the dosage occurs only into the main condensate LCA10 System
The dosage of Ammonia at the initial filling can only be done in manual mode.

No Oxygen Dosing QCL during AVT and initial filling mode.

AVT operation mode (auto mode):

The addition of ammonia into the CPP (LDK10) system occurs when:
- The oxygen dosing is not in operation
- The signal AMNA DOSING CPP (30LDY00EE015M) “ON” is active
- The mass flow in the main condensate (10LCA20CF005M) exceeds a preset limit value
(setpoint > 10 kg/s).
- The condensate polishing plant CPP is in operation and the mass flow (30LDK25CF005M)
exceeds a preset limit value (setpoint > 10 kg/s).
- The measurement of the specific conductivity in the main condensate (30QUC10CQ001M)
is active

The addition of ammonia into the Main condensate (LCA10) system occurs when:
- The oxygen dosing is not in operation

OT operation mode – ammonia (auto mode)


The addition of ammonia into the CPP (LDK10) system occurs when:
- The oxygen dosing, indicated by (30QCL00EE005N) is in operation
- The signal AMNA DOSING CPP (30LDY00EE015M) “ON” is active
- The mass flow in the main condensate (30LCA20CF005M) exceeds a preset limit value
(setpoint > 10 kg/s).
- The condensate polishing plant CPP is in operation and the mass flow (30LDK25CF005M)
exceeds a preset limit value (setpoint > 10 kg/s).
- The measurement of the specific conductivity in the main condensate (30QUC10CQ001M)
is active

The addition of ammonia into the CPP (LDK10) system is proportional to the flow rate of the
CPP Train Flow (30LDK25CF005M) when:
- The oxygen dosing indicated by (30QCL00EE005N) is in operation
- The signal AMNA DOSING CPP (30LDY00EE015M) “ON” is active
- The mass flow in the main condensate (10LCA20CF005M) is in min flow
- The condensate polishing plant CPP is in operation and the mass flow (30LDK25CF005M)
exceeds a preset limit value setpoint > 10 kg/s).
“If the CPP in regeneration, indicated by AMNA DOSING CPP (30LDY00EE015M)
is not active, the dosage will be interrupted“.

The addition of ammonia into the Feedwater (LAB10) system occurs when:

Oxygen Dosing QCL


The main dosage into the main condensate downstream CEP (LCA10) and during degassing of the
feedwater tank into the feedwater (LAB10) system is carried out by means of a Mass Flow instrument.
The dosage is controlled by the oxygen concentration in the water and steam cycle
Set point should be 0,09 mg/l.
The related oxygen dosing line will be automatically stopped if the
- 30QCL00EE005N is disabled (O2 value too high)
- main condensate flow (30LCA20CF005M)
or when dosing in the feedwater system LAB (if 30LAA10EE001M Dearation “ON” is available)
- HP FW FLOW (30LCA20CF005M)
drops below a minimum. After exceeding this minimum condensate or feedwater flow again the dosing
into the main condensate or feedwater system and will be started automatically if 30QCL00EE005N is
enabled. The delivery rate is controlled by the oxygen concentration in
- Condensate downstream CEP (30QUC10CQ004M)
- HP feed water downstream Pumps (30QUA10CQ004M)

OT operation mode – oxygen (auto mode):


The addition of oxygen into the Main condensate (LCA10) system occurs when:
- The mass flow in the main condensate (30LCA20CF005M) exceeds a preset limit value
setpoint > 10 kg/s).
- The measurement of the oxygen concentration in the main condensate (30QUC10CQ004M)
is active
- No degassing of the feedwater tank will be done

The addition of oxygen into the Feedwater (LAB10) system occurs when:
- The mass flow in the HP Feedwater (30LAB20FF955M) exceeds a preset limit value
setpoint > 10 kg/s).
- The measurement of the oxygen concentration in the HP Feedwater (30QUA10CQ004M)
is active
- The degassing of the feedwater tank, indicated by the signal (30LAA10EE001M) will be done
