Running Finale 2003

Installing Finale 2003 on WindowsNT/2000/XP
If any previous version of Finale has been installed on the machine, Finale 2003 recommends that you restart your computer and log on as System Administrator before installing on WindowsNT/2000/XP systems. This will prevent erroneous font warnings. We recommend that you install Finale, and any other software, when logged in as System Administrator. We recommend that you turn off any programs running in the background, as virus detectors can often prevent Finale from installing necessary files and updating the registry. Rest assured, your Finale CD does not contain any viruses. To turn off all programs running in the background: Press Ctrl-Alt-Delete once to bring up the Close Program dialog box. (In Windows NT, 2000, or XP, press Ctrl-Alt-Delete, then click on Task Manager.) This lists every process that is running on the system. Explorer and Systray are always running, so leave them alone. If you see anything other than those two, click on any one of the others and click End Task. When that goes away, press Ctrl-Alt-Delete again and End Task on another one in the list. (If a program remains on the list after you have tried to End Task on it, click on it, click and hold on End Task for 10 seconds, then release it. If a "This program is not responding..." message appears, click End Task in it). Repeat the process until only Explorer and Systray are left. Some computers may have some other "required" programs - if Ending Task on a program crashes the computer, try again without Ending Task on that program.

Starting Finale 2003 - DLLs

Most applications (including Coda products) require a set of files, the Microsoft redistributables, in order to work successfully on your system. These redistributable files are normally already present on most systems and are not generally included in application setup/install scripts - doing so would add about 1.5 MB to the size of the package, and cause a longer installation process. More importantly, as these files are constantly updated by Microsoft and are operating-system specific, including these files in an application installer could result in incorrect files being added in your system and subsequent problems. In rare cases these files may be missing or out of date on your system. In this case an error will be reported when you start the program. Here are some examples of the errors that could be reported: If the files are missing... 'The dynamic link library MSVCP60.DLL could not be found in the specified path...' or 'The dynamic link library MSVCRT.DLL could not be found in the specified path...' If the files are out of date... 'The OCXTS.EXE file is linked to missing export MFC42.DLL:6880.' We have included a special setup program (dllupdateb.exe) containing just these redistributable files for users who are experiencing these problems. However, these may not be the latest versions of these files, so this is less preferable than searching for a more recent version. Follow the steps below to run the setup program we've included: Run the setup program dllupdateb.exe - found on the CD in the Finale Extras\DLLFILES folder. You may be asked to reboot your computer - in which case it is important that you do so before continuing. The application should now start correctly.

User Manual
For full documentation on how to run Finale 2003, see the User Manual. To access the User Manual, choose the Help menu, then User Manual, then Table Of Contents.

Searching the User Manual

Finale 2003 includes special index files for use with the Acrobat Reader Search Plug-in. With the Search Plug-in, you can search for help in all chapters of the User Manual. We've included the Search Plug-in as part of the Acrobat Reader installer on the CD. The Search Plug-in is also available for free downloading as part of the Acrobat Reader at http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html. Make sure you check "Include option for searching PDF files".

Exercise Files
After successfully completing a Typical Installation of Finale, the Finale Exercise files (which will take approximately 3MB of space on your hard drive) will be installed. These files are necessary in order to use Finale's Exercise Wizard feature. If any SmartMusic Online components have been previously installed, the Exercises are automatically installed in the "Exercises" folder within the SmartMusic folder on your computer. If no SmartMusic Online components have been previously installed, you will be prompted to choose where the SmartMusic folder should be installed. The Exercises are then installed in that SmartMusic folder (as are any future SmartMusic Online components). For more information on Coda's SmartMusic products, please visit us at www.smartmusic.com.

Finale and Windows XP

We are currently using Windows XP at Coda. We are not aware of any problems running Finale in Windows XP. Please note that your MIDI and printer software and hardware must be XP compatible in

order for Finale to have optimal functionality.

Converting Finale 2002 (and earlier) documents into Finale 2003 documents
Finale 2003 has a different file format than earlier versions, and converts older files to the new format when you open them in Finale 2003. You should be aware of the following points: Opening old documents Finale 2003 will open and convert older versions' documents, giving them the default title "UNTITLED.MUS." We recommend saving a newly converted document with a different name than the original file, keeping the older unconverted file as a backup. If you do want to save the file using the same name, choose Save As from the File menu. Finale displays the original file name, so you can click OK to rewrite over the old file. Running older versions of Finale Finale 2002 (and earlier versions) for Windows or Macintosh cannot open any Finale 2003 file, except Standard MIDI Files. To share Finale files, the Finale application must have the same (or later) version number. Updating Finale preferences settings Finale 2003 can convert your old Finale.INI settings. If you want to use your old settings, copy the Finale.INI file from your old Finale directory into the new Finale 2003 directory.

Fixes in Finale 2002b

Save As Smart Music Accompaniment Smart Music Accompaniment files saved in Finale 2002b now play back the accompaniment staves properly. Helpful note about creating accompaniment files: When creating a Smart Music Accompaniment file, you may wish to simply remove repeats from the Finale file and replace the repeated sections with "real measures." If you decide to retain repeats, however, here's a tip: When creating a Smart Music Accompaniment file from a Finale file that has a forward repeat in measure one, you'll want to take extra care in configuring the corresponding backwards repeat. After specifying the measure you wish the backwards repeat to jump to, click the "Relative Jump" checkbox in the Backwards Repeat Bar Assignment dialog box. Without activating this checkbox, the accompaniment may skip a measure in playback. Finale User Manual Chapter numbering problems found in 2002a were resolved. The inclusion of Cross Platform Font Support, described in detail elsewhere in the User Manual, was added to the "What's New" Section.

Fixes in Finale 2002a

Clef Tool Entering clef percentages outside of the allowable range are handled better. Clicking "Revert to Single Clef" retains all settings made in the Mid-Measure Clef dialog box. Setting the size of a forced clef to a large percentage value will not cause negative numbers to be displayed in the Change Clef db, nor cause the clef to display at 100%. Clef changes set "from measure X to next clef change" do not stop at empty measures. Clef changes created with metatools do not stop at empty measures. Clef changes set "from measure X through the end of the piece" will not stop at blank measures. Exercise Wizard The correct transposition is used for the Bass (vocal) instrument. Music spacing is always applied to lessons, regardless of the Automatic Music Spacing setting. Deleting all ensembles no longer causes a crash. Changing staff names no longer impacts the Exercise Wizard. Expression Tool Expressions with the Break Multimeasure Rest feature enabled respect staff list assignments. File Menu - File Conversion Some polyphonic SmartScore files import better. File Menu Miscellaneous If you have Finale installed, and then install a Finale demo, subsequently double-clicking on a MUS file in Windows Explorer will continue to launch Finale and not the demo. Help menu Problems with the QuickStart videos either crashing or having audio problems have been resolved. Mass Mover Menu

Menu items no longer run off the screen on certain screen resolutions. SmartFind and Paint now paints slurs in all possible cases in specific files. Measure Tool Deleting measures from the measure tool context menu no longer leaves new measures selected and is now consistent with the same function performed from the measure menu. Handles do not remain selected after measures are deleted from the Measure menu. MIDI Setup The advanced button appears when using the 16-bit MIDI driver the MIDI Setup dialog box. Note Mover Tool Note mover operations no longer result in notes that are many dozens of leger lines below the staff when staff has a chromatic down transposition. Options Menu Text block IDs are retained in the proper order after running the Data Check/Swap Fonts utility. Font Annotation files are now backwards compatible. Other Individual avi files in the QuickStartVideos Folder now have file names that reflect the subject material. Playback Turning click off no longer disables the click during Countoff. Finale now looks at the new "Playback" bit (in the Edit Frame dialog) when using scrub playback. Printing All Japanese 2-byte font characters appear correctly in PostScript printing. Selection Tool Selecting a text block no longer inserts an erroneous carriage return. Right-clicking for the context menu works on staff names in scroll view. Clicking a note with the Selection Tool no longer sends a MIDI patch change message to the specified MIDI Out device. Right-clicking on an Abbreviated Staff Name in Scroll View no longer causes an Invalid Page Fault. Simple Entry Tool Simple Key Commands and Simple Navigation were added to the Simple menu to outline the new keyboard shortcuts in Simple Entry. After undoing the entry of any but the first note of a measure, redoing that entry no longer causes Fill With Rests to be run in the place of the "redone" note. It's now possible to enter notes in any part of the rightmost system when 2 systems are placed on the same line. Smart Shape Tool All primary and secondary handles of slurs can now be nudged. Metatools were added to Smart Shapes. "Tips Avoid Staff Lines by X ", found in the Smart Slurs Options dialog box, functions as expected. Smart Shape measure attached slurs extended over systems do not reset back to their default shape when they are moved after edited. In the SmartShape context menu, check marks now appear in the Engraver Slurs and Avoid Accidentals sections. Multiple Selection via Shift-Click can be performed when a primary handle overlaps secondary handle.

Keyboard shortcuts added for Slur primary and secondary handles. Default settings in Slur Contour and Smart Slur Options have been fine-tuned for optimum performance. Settings for Extra Long slurs have been similarly adjusted. Clicking and dragging a handle to move a slur extended over a system break no longer inadvertently adjusts the contour of the slur. If Smart Shapes are extended over system breaks and then moved back over only the first system, handles are no longer left over the subsequent systems. "Make Horizontal" setting in Smart Shape Options is now saved with the document. Dragging either end of an engraver slur to a new entry now removes manual positioning on the slur so it can reshape itself to the new situation. Nudging the right secondary handle of the first half of a slur that spans a system break no longer results in a slur that stretches across the page to the second half. When nudging engraver slur secondary handles for the first time (before any previous manual edit), the slur now behave exactly like when dragging the handles with the mouse - specifically the engraver shape is retained. The Tab order of the primary handles on slurs is now more intuitive. Selecting Make Horizontal for a hairpin crossing a system break will now affect both halves of the hairpin. Furthermore, the handle position of the half not clicked on will subsequently be properly positioned. Dragging a primary handle of a slur no longer results in the slur changing to a non-engraver slur. SmartLine Styles based on a font character now properly register that font as being in use in the document. A problem was resolved where certain slurs were corrupted during creation so that they could not be properly copied. Smart Shape Metatools assigned to non-alpha characters ('<', etc.) are now mapped to the appropriate keys on international keyboards. Special Tools Tool Changes to the font are saved when context-clicking on a note with the Note Shape Tool. Upon using the Accidental Mover tool you now have complete control over the results of the Note Shape tool (and the resize tool). Speedy Entry Tool Playback will occur only on the appropriate channels when the staff is set to none in the Instrument List but Playback is enabled in Speedy Entry. If a staff is set to "none" on the instrument list, and Playback is enabled in the Speedy Menu, speedy entry playback is now properly muted. Final notes are no longer missing from speedy entry frame. (Used to occur following specific steps when scale specified in Speedy Options was something other than 100%.) Steps that worked to create notes of the same pitch in subsequent measures in earlier versions of Finale now produce the same pitches in Speedy Entry. Creating ties over a page break on an entry with two or more notes no longer produces a crash. Finale will no longer crash in Speedy Edit in Page View following a special combination of grace notes and ties in the last measure on a page. Staff Tool Justification Full and Justification Forced Full no longer automatically alternate between visits to the Position Staff/Group Name dialog box. Inserting a staff before a staff with floating time enabled no longer prohibits you from creating any more floating time signatures for that staff. Text Tool Text no longer vanishes from a text block in a specific 2k1 file upon conversion into 2k2. Tuplet Tool

Deleting a note or rest in a tuplet, so that a nested tuplet would be created, no longer produces a crash.

Fixes in Finale 2002

File Menu Text of Multiple Splits dialog box amended for clarity. Files without any text libraries will open properly on Macintosh Finale. Clicking Select for Set Track-to-Staff List in the Import MIDI File Options dialog box activates the Set Track-to-Staff List radio button. The file is saved if you are in a text block when you choose Save or Close from the File menu. Speedy Entry Tool Speedy Entry will stop recording notes in Caps Lock mode if you overfill a measure and the "Too Many Notes" warning appears. The Speedy Frame closes when you click Play on the Playback Controls. Speedy entry works correctly with a pickup measure if you enter a note whose value is greater than the pickup measure, use the up arrow to move the cursor and then enter another note. Simple Entry Tool Playback during Simple Entry resumes after All Notes Off is chosen from the MIDI Menu. Simple Entry will no longer allow the user to change a grace note to a regular note if this would override Check for Extra Notes. Options Menu File Integrity checker correctly processes Mirrored measures copied with the Mass Mover. Setting the Smallest Duration in Quantization Settings to below 4 EDUS and running Retranscribe will no longer cause a crash. Changing the measurement units in the Options Menu will immediately display a change in the text fields in the Edit System Margins box. Lyrics Tool Lyrics Tool will always open the baseline window when the Lyrics Tool is selected with Type Into Score, even in a document not created by the wizard. Chord Tool Fretboards that have an open string marking and a fret number marking play back correctly. Handles move smoothly when adjusting the chord or fretboard baselines. Fretboards appear on the same baseline regardless of learned chord status. If the Listen for String button is used to define a MIDI pitch to a string in the Fretboard Instrument Definition dialog box, the fretboard will playback in the Fretboard Editor dialog box. Measure Tool Canceling out of the Custom Barline selection of the contextual menu retains the current barline selection. Expression Tool Shapes in the score remain the same when using Move Up and Move Down in the Shape Selection dialog box.
