1 Scope
This standard specifies the identification of pipelines in above-ground installations according to the fluid
conveyed.
The identification of piping systems on ships and marine installations as specified in DIN EN ISO 14726-1 and
that for pipelines in aerospace applications as specified in LN 9105, as well as pipeline identification
specifications for other applications are not dealt with in this standard.
A clear identification of pipelines according to the fluid conveyed is essential for ensuring safety, correct
maintenance operations, and effective firefighting, and is intended to bring attention to hazards in order to

hazard symbol
square sign which through the combination of the colour orange, a black pictogram and possibly a short text –
or “hazard statement” – warns against the hazardous characteristics of materials
3.2
safety sign
sign which – through the combination of a specific colour with a specific geometric shape – can be used to
make a general safety statement, and through the addition of a graphical symbol, can be used to make a
more specific safety statement

warning sign
safety sign that warns against a risk or hazard

4 Identification requirements
4.1 General
Pipelines shall be clearly, legibly and permanently identified at intervals no greater than 10 m along the entire
pipe length and at points crucial to operation, e.g. at pipe ends and junctions, where the pipe passes through
walls or floors, or near valves. In some cases, e.g. at pipe bends or where there is a close proximity of
pipelines for conveying different fluids, it may be necessary to apply the identification at closer intervals.
a) general information:
⎯ The basic colour and supplementary colour indicating the fluid conveyed, taken from Table 1.
⎯ The direction of flow, indicated by means of an arrow. Where the flow changes direction, both
directions are to be indicated by arrows. Arrows for indicating direction of flow shall be in the lettering
colour specified in Table 1.
⎯ The fluid being conveyed expressed as text, a code or abbreviation, or chemical formula (referred to
below as the “legend”). This information shall be in the lettering colour specified in Table 1. When
using codes or abbreviations, an explanation of the code or abbreviation used shall be posted or
otherwise displayed at locations crucial to operation.
b) supplementary information:
⎯ If the fluids conveyed are deemed hazardous substances in accordance with the Chemikaliengesetz
– ChemG (German Act on the Protection Against Hazardous Substances (German Chemicals Act)):
5
DIN 2403:2007-05
The hazard symbols as in Annex A. When identifying hazardous substances and preparations
hazard statements may be dispensed with, taking the safe viewing distance into consideration.
⎯ If the fluids conveyed are radioactive: The warning sign “Warnung vor radioaktiven Stoffen oder
ionisierenden Strahlen” D-W005 (Warning: Radioactive substances or ionizing radiation) as in
DIN 4844-2.
The identification can be further supplemented, e.g. with the pressure, temperature or other characteristics by
means of letter symbols as in DIN 1304-1 and by means of safety signs as in DIN 4844-2, see Table A.2 for
examples.
The fluids conveyed through pipelines are divided into 10 groups according to their general properties; the
relevant colours for each group are given in Table 1.

5.1 General
The identification may be applied by means of painting and lettering, bands or tape (e.g. self-adhesive tape),
or labels or plates (e.g. adhesive labels, or plastic, metal or enamel plates). The alternative most suitable to
ambient conditions, particularly as regards the safe viewing distance, shall be selected.
The identification shall always be clearly and permanently applied or marked. It shall be made of materials
that are resistant to the ambient conditions at the location at which it is applied or marked.
The basic and supplementary colours form the basis of each identification.
The legend and the flow direction arrow shall only be presented in the basic colour section, centred, either one
below the other or side by side. For clearer presentation, the legend and flow direction arrow can be
separated, either by a horizontal line (when placed one below the other) or a vertical line (when placed side by
side); the line shall be in the lettering colour.
Hazard symbols and safety signs shall be placed before the side of the arrow that does not point in the
direction of flow (see Figure 3). For clearer presentation, the hazard symbols and safety signs may be
separated from the legend by means of a vertical line in the lettering colour.
Any additional texts, graphical symbols or formulas are to be placed directly after or directly underneath the
legend, in the latter case centred.
If identification across the entire circumference of the pipe is not possible, the marking may be shortened.
The layout of information is determined by the required safe viewing distance and the resulting character
height (see 5.5).
Labels, signs and plates may have a border in the relevant lettering colour given in Table 1.
The size of the identification is determined by the required safe viewing distance and the resulting character
height (see 5.5).
5.5 Design principles, dimensions, safe viewing distance and character height
The size of the identification is determined by the required safe viewing distance and the resulting character
height, and on the length of the legend.

DIN 2403:2007-05
E =h×Z
where
For letters and numbers Z = 300, for warning signs Z = 40 and for hazard symbols Z = 40. The equation
applies to an illuminated surface and for reading distances up to 25 m (see DIN 1450). The safe viewing
distance relates to a height = 0,817 × side length. The side length determines the size of the sign.
When determining the size of the identification, the following requirements shall be taken into consideration:
⎯ the ratio of the width of the basic colour panel to that of the supplementary colour panel(s) should be
2 : 1;
⎯ the flow direction shall either be indicated by a pointed end of the label or as a symbol as in Figure 1 in
accordance with ISO 7000. When using the arrow symbol as in ISO 7000 the point of the arrow shall be
at least at 1/3 the lettering height;
⎯ the width of any borders shall be 0,025 b (b = height of the marking or label/sign);
⎯ when applying markings directly to the pipe the max. area of the marking shall be 79,57 % of the pipe
diameter, which means that when applying the marking to the entire pipe circumference the information is
repeated at least 4 times, so that the marking is legible from all points of observation;
⎯ when using hazard symbols and warning signs, the safe viewing distance of the entire identification will
always be determined on the safe viewing distance for the hazard symbols and warning signs.

EXAMPLE 4
Pipelines for supplying fire extinguishing media (fire mains, for short) are to be identified by a red-white-red
marking with the white field making up 50 % of the total area and the two red fields on either side of the white
field each making up 25 % of the total area. The white field shall contain the graphical symbol denoting “media
and equipment for fire fighting purposes” in the colour code for the extinguishing medium used, e.g. green for
water, red for steam. It is generally sufficient to mark fire mains with the colour-coded graphical symbol. If
necessary, text giving additional information may be added; see Figures 6 to 9 for examples.

DIN 2403:2007-05
In water supply systems subject to the Trinkwasserverordnung (German drinking water regulation), above-
ground pipelines for different supply systems shall be identified by a green-white-green marking. The white
field shall make up 50 % of the total area and the two green fields on either side of the white field shall each
make up 25 % of the total area. The white field shall contain the relevant abbreviation as in DIN EN 806-1 or
text as in Table 2 and Figures 10 to 13.
