EVEN-year-old Siha Maharaj will spend the rest of his life with blood transfusions every three weeks. The Class One student of Andhra Primary School in Nadroga was born with a blood disorder and has been getting blood transfusions since. He was at the Colonial War Memorial Hospital for another blood transfusion to ensure that he stays alive. Sihas father Mahen Maharaj says his son is living proof of the benefits of blood that has been donated by generous people
during blood drives. Mr Maharaj says Siha lives on 70 per cent donated blood. If he does not get a blood transfusion at the maximum of six weeks, he will die. He was diagnosed with a genetic blood disorder at birth and since then, we have been getting him to CWM Hospital for blood transfusions, he said. Siha used to have blood transfusions every four weeks before but now he needs to have it done every three weeks. When his blood level gets low, he feels weak. He loses his

Mr Maharaj said his son was getting blood that has been donated by people during the drives organised by various organisations. Trade unions in Fiji are not banned as claimed by some organisations and people abroad says Attorney General Aiyaz SayedKhaiyum. Sayed-Khaiyum said there is a huge misnomer regarding the operations of trade unions in Fiji. There is a lot of misinformation being spread regarding the new Essential National Industries Employment Decree which many thinks are violating the rights of trade unions, he said. No where does it say that trade unions in Fiji are banned. There is no law that actually sets that out. He said much of the noise thats being made by trade unionist is those whose livelihoods are dependent on membership dues coming from government or state owned enterprises. According to Sayed-Khaiyum, in no way has there been a derogation of that particular right to be able to join a trade union. Nobody is saying that we should exploit workers. he said. Sayed-Khaiyum said there are many unions who operate in Fiji and are doing a wonderful job. In relation to the arrest of two unionists recently he said it is tragically hypocritical that some people who have been going offshore talk about the rule of law and independence of the judiciary. Let me categorically state that they werent arrested because they were trade unionists. They were arrested because they were breaching the law and they have been charged under particular provision of the Public Order Act like many other people have been charged previously. He said the misconception that these two gentlemens were arrested because they were trade unionists is untrue. We all need to think as loyal citizens and take the country forward, Sayed-Khaiyum said.

Officials at Washington did not support Australias proposal to remove Fiji from its United Nations (UN) peacekeeping duties, a WikiLeaks cable has revealed. New Zealand and Australian government officials, former US-ambassador to Fiji, Steven McGann stressed Washingtons concerns that the two parties not rush to remove Fiji from its UN duties. McGann highlighted the impact such a suspension would have on Fijis military. He also pointed out the effect of reducing military assistance to Fiji which would lead to them being less acceptable for peacekeeping operations. The meeting was held in Canberra in which government officials also discussed various responses to the events that occurred in Fiji on that same day.

An international stamp of recognition acknowledging confidence in the growth of the Fijian economy was awarded by Standard and Poor that improved Fijis credit ratings. Standard and Poor's (S&P), an international independent provider of credit ratings, has revised its methodology and assumptions for rating sovereign governments. Consequently, Fiji's ratings have improved: credit rating is raised to B from Braised to B from C rating is revised to B/stable from B / positive Bainimarama said the improved rating is awarded to Fiji at a time when many countries are going through an economic crisis. With the current reforms put in place and those being planned by Government, we can expect Fiji's economic growth prospects to be enhanced, which will further improve the indicators required to raise Fiji's ratings in the future, he said. This positive rating will instill further confidence in achieving Fiji's medium term macroeconomic policy goals as well as the key pillars of the Charter, which will lead Fiji to economic prosperity. The improved rating will also inspire investor confidence that Fiji is in a better position than some countries that are currently facing economic crisis. The Report by S&P also noted the continued improvements to Fiji's external position and the reduction in the current account deficit. S&P highlighted the importance of the tourism sector which continues to recover and rebound. This will further assist Fiji's external position to improve as the level of foreign reserves increases. S&Ps positive rating awarded to Fiji comes at a time when the world largest economy, the USA lost unprecedented ratings from S&P.

New Zealand was the hero to students of Lautoka Ahmadiyya Muslim Primary School. The students of the school said in unison, Thank you New Zealand, after they were presented with chairs and desks worth $11,000 by the NZ Trade Commissioner Peter Lund. The desks replaced those that were destroyed by termite infestation last year. During the hand-over ceremony, Mr Lund said they were glad to assist the school because education played an important role towards Fijis development. New Zealand and Fiji have a long history of partnership and the Commission is very happy LEARN MORE to assist with educational necessities, Mr Lund said.
