Lots of new attractions and acts at the 2011 Wilson County Fair
By Kimberly Jordan Staff Writer

The Wilson County Fair will offer visitors several new attractions for the 2011 installment, with additions including lumberjacks, cowboys on horseback, ATV racing and more. This year there is something to appeal to every person who comes to the fair, said Fair Board President Hale Moss.

Paul Bunyan Lumberjack Show

The Paul Bunyan Lumberjack Show runs everyday of the fair on the Volunteer Stage. According to Moss, the show includes log rolling in water, tree climbing and many other traditional lumberjack events. We actually had them at the fair about 10 years ago, it was a pretty popular show. They are all champion lumberjacks, Moss said. Showtimes are Monday-Thursday at 6 p.m. and 8 p.m.; Friday at 6, 8 and 9 p.m.; and Saturday and Sunday at 4,6 and 8 p.m.

event is making its first appearance at the fair, and Moss said these shows are real popular west of the Mississippi River. It combines the horsemans riding skills and shooting skills into one event. Each contestant has to guide the horse through the course while aiming at balloons placed on poles and attempting to pop them. It demonstrates horse and rider working together, he said. Moss also noted there was a lot of local interest and locals involved in this show.

Rooster Crowing Contest

Have you ever wondered what it takes to make a rooster crow? Then this contest is one you dont want to miss. Stemming from the popularity of the Rhode Island Red Head competition, the rooster crowing contest pits man against fowl in an attempt to make the latter crow as many times as possible in the time limit. Its a fun event to bring attention to the poultry barn. Whoever can encourage the rooster to crow the most times in the given time limit wins. Moss admits he is interested to see just how someone encourages a rooster to crow in the afternoon as everyone knows that roosters crow in the morning. The contest will be Sunday, Aug. 14 at 3 p.m.

John Anderson has won many awards throughout his music career including: Country Music Associations Horizon Award, Grammy Award for Amazing Grace; A Country Salute to Gospel. Academy of Country Music honored him with its Career Achievement Award. Country Music Association Album of the Year for Common Threads: The Songs of the Eagles. Just a-Swingin won the CMA Single of the Year. He also has received numerous nominations for Grammies, ACMs, and CMAs and has several gold and platinum album certifications. Anderson was born Dec. 13, 1954, in Orlando, Fla., and raised in Apopka, Fla. As a teen, Anderson played in a rock band, but ultimately pursued country music when he moved to Nashville in 1971 where he played in clubs and also helped build the Grand Ole Opry House. He signed with Warner Bros. in 1977 and by1980 he made his mark on the top 10. He turned Billy Joe Shaver's "I'm Just an Old Chunk of Coal (But I'm Gonna Be a Diamond Someday)" into a Top 5 hit, and "Wild and Blue" spent two weeks at No. 1 in 1982, soon after "Swingin'" was released, and shot to number 1, becoming one of his signature hits in 1983. The smash single won a CMA award, and Anderson won the CMA Horizon Award. The timeless song was just recently recorded by Leann Rimes and nominated for a Grammy, once again proving Anderson's track record for producing great music. Anderson began working on the album Seminole Wind in the early 90's. From this album, Anderson then released the single "Straight Tequila Night" , and it shot to No. 1, setting the stage for five more years of hits, including Mark Knopfler's "When It Comes to You," "Seminole Wind" and the No. 1 "Money in the Bank." This record spawned numerous nominations, including Male Vocalist, Song of the Year and Album of the Year.

Continued from page 5
Its expanded this year. Its a popular sport and is attractive to fair participants. I think there will be a big turnout, said Moss. With more than 20 divisions, the races can offer something for every fan.

For the creative types, the decorated hay bale contest is a new canvas to showcase artistic abilities. Entrants can use paints, cut outs and other items to make their hay bale stand out from the crowd. The bales will be displayed throughout the fairgrounds to add decoration. We hope that some of the local 4-H clubs and FFA chapters will participate, as well as individuals, Moss said.

Kickin 4 A Cure Line Dancing Competition

This competition was envisioned by members of the Fair Board who have battled cancer. Contest participants are divided into couples dances and line dancing. For visitors that are not in the contest, but like to line dance, a new dance will be taught following the close of the competition. The proceeds from this contest will be donated to cancer research. Its a fun night for people to get together and raise cancer awareness, Moss said. The contest will be held Friday, Aug. 19 beginning at 7 p.m.

Baby Quilt Competition

Local quilters submitted pre-made baby quilts on Aug. 6 to be judged and displayed in the Fair Museum (located in the Jordan House). Moss said all of the competitors entries will be donated to area neonatal units following the fair. The fair is not only an opportunity for fun, said Moss. Theres also a lot of charitable things too.

Hats Off to You Contest

Fair visitors can show off creativity in another way at the 2011 fair with the Hats Off to You contest. This is a spin off of the fair theme and allows all guests to play along. Its a different contest everyday, Moss said. The first day is Best Ford hat and there are others throughout the week. Just come by the Fair Office Booth and show off your hat. Judges will pick the best hat each day at 7 p.m.
With this years theme Hats Off to Wilson County, you knew there would be a Hats Off to You contest, didnt you?

Wade Henry High Roller

Wade Henry is what Moss termed a strolling act who will be touring the fairgrounds showcasing his talent on a unicycle. We met him at the Tennessee Association of Fairs meeting last year. He is a juggling act and he juggles while riding his unicycle. Hes really good.

Decorated Hay Bale Contest

Other Events of Interest

Wilson County Fair makes news in 2010 Despite weather, Wilson Fair remains in Top 50
By SANDY CAMPBELL Staff Writer

For the third year, the Wilson County Fair has been named one of the top 50 fairs in North America by Carnivalwarehouse.com., a website devoted to fairs, festivals, carnivals and events. Wilson County Promotions President Hale Moss said this ranking came despite the fact that torrential rains and resulting mud forced officials to close the gates on Wednesday night, the first time in history. The last three annual rankings for the Wilson County Fair are: 2008 41st 2009 37th 2010 49th This year's attendance was 397,075. Last year, it was 505,434. Moss believes the drop in rankings had more to do with the weather it was extremely hot on the days the rain wasn't falling than on any waning interest by fairgoers. The top fair on the list this year was the Texas State Fair in Dallas, followed by the Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo and the Minnesota State Fair in St. Paul. No other fair held in Tennessee made the list. Moss has been working with the fair in some capacity since 1979 and has been president for 26 years. He said several factors have contributed to the fair's recent national recognition, including its location at the Ward Agricultural Center, with its relatively easy access from I-40. On a separate list complied by Carnivalwarehouse.com., Amusements of America, which provides the carnival rides and midway for the Wilson County Fair, was rated 10th among such contracting companies. The Wilson County Fair won five awards at the recent International Association of Fairs and Expositions Convention held in Las Vegas. Wilson County Promotions President Hale Moss said the fair won first place in the Agricultural Photo Series category for photos on the sorghum making process. A second place award was given for Printed Material Developed and Produced by a Fair to Promote Agriculture Programs. Moss said this was in recognition of the agricultural education cards with trivia questions placed around the fairgrounds during the event. Another second place was for the Competitive Photo Series Regional 4-H Outdoor Meat Cookery Competition Photos. "This competition was held in the covered arena on Thursday and 4-H members from the Middle Tennessee
