(197'1, Mel Brooks) In this rip-roaring farce, greedy governor's aid Hedly Larnaff wants to steal all the land from the citizens of Rock Itidge before they realize the railroad is going through. Hoping to make resiclents flee, he sends in what he considers to be a disruptive element: a sheriff. The difference here is that the sheriff is black. Brooks takes what is essentially a rather nasty scenario and turns it into infectious, riotous, anarchic comcdy. The script is credited to five different writers and accordingly the humour ranges {rom guttural to high brow, but the jokes never stop. Restored 35mm print courtesy of Warner Bros.
