CHAPTER 1
1.0 INTRODUCTION Everyday thousands of students are using e-learning as a new platform to study and learning. Nowadays, in this edge, many universities and high institution of education use this approach to encourage their student to increase student knowledge and skill, so they can be productive and keep high-quality on job, advance in their careers and have positive impacts on the success of their institution and their communities.

The application of e-learning in term of high institution of education is defined by teaching process delivered by technology-supported teaching and learning, based on pedagogical teaching practices. This means that e-learning is not a passive medium for delivering content, but is and interactive process between teachers and students, and its facilitated by benefits that technology has offered. But then, currently the growth of social networking seems giving an opportunity to communities to expand the benefits of elearning itself. As we already knew, the rapid growth of social learning application make new era has developed. All people include students and teachers prefer using social network to communicate and get connected. The ability of social network application has given so much opportunity to communities in developing their learning environment. So, the integration between social learning application and e-learning application had spotted the opinion that this application must be use in future our open e-learning application.

1.1

BACKGROUND E-learning can be defined as education created and delivered using the technologies related to the combination of computer, internet and the telephony. E-learning also can include content delivery in multiple formats, management of learning experience and a community of networked learners, content developers and experts (Chadha, 2002). Currently, e-learning had been developed in closed environment which all the content and communication channel are being done in university communities. But now, the growth of social networking had sparked the idea that social network can be the new channel to delivered the knowledge. The knowledge must be in many forms and content. It also can be shared and view not limited to university environment, but then all over the world. It will increase the learning experience not only for pedagogies, but for all students. The integration between two entities will create new tool in encouraging learning process which called as social learning.

Social learning is a learning process which uses the facilities as social media platform or known as social learning tools. The tools is social book marking, blogging, RSS/Feed Reader, micorblogging tools (Twitter, Tweet Deck), e-mail, Instant Messaging(Skype), mind mapping tools, Presentation (sharing) tools, Wiki, Podcast, Content Management system (CMS), Social networking tools (Facebook, Linkedin, Ning etc), Social Networking Analysis (SNA) and etc.

Even though the social learning is being developed and used in other country, but Malaysia it seems a new thing and application that can be used as learning platform. Other social learning is Elgg, Sclipo.com, Atutor.ca and EmergingEdTech.com application. All these social learning have their own advantages and disadvantages. And for Malaysian background, it must be based on Malaysia rules and regulation.

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM The study aims to address the new framework of open e-learning practices in high educational perspectives. Ultimately, this research stated that new approach and framework will be new guide in leading the new era of open e-learning. The new elearning must contains application from social network and e-learning. These are some problems statement comes from hypothesis: 1. What are the best applications of social network that can be applied to encourage students have learning experiences in their e-learning platform? 2. What are the best approaches in social learning that can be use to keep high quality of job, and giving positive impacts on students success of their learning environment.

PURPOSE OF THE RESEACRH This research is conducted to identify what elements in social learning application, social network application and e-learning application. My main purpose is to develop a new social learning environment in Malaysia which involves all education centers.

OBJECTIVE OF THE RESEARCH a) To compare the social learning application elements include general and specific in other country that can be apply in Malaysia education center. b) To identify tools that support in e-learning which help students increase their performance. c) To develop new approach in social learning so that can be apply in Malaysia environment. d) To discover elements in social network application that can be put in social learning to increase the involvement of students in new social network.

SCOPE OF STUDY

The research scope is focused on statement below: 1. The research is focus on social network application, social learning application and also e-learning. 2. Our main correspondents are divided into two groups which are staff/lecturers and also students. This focus group is mainly come from faculty science computer and information system and it will take only 60 correspondents. 3. This research also will overcome what are the weaknesses of current el-learning so that new e-learning will be created as cope these problems.

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY This research is important in order to improve the performance of students in high education center. It wills widest the scope of information searching and sharing. Students can do the learning process not limited to their current district. Plus as lectures and pedagogies, they can play their main role to distribute the information and knowledge. In addition, this research will give extra alternatives for lectures and internal team say yes more often to cope some currently e-learning application. This is one of the incentives for the education environment to be more one step ahead on education and knowledge can be done every time, everywhere and limitless to everybody who have the useful message.

CHAPTER 2

LITERATURE RIVIEW 1.1 E-learning E-learning system is the replacement of traditional method of teaching mode. E-learning is the process of teaching and learning that involves computers and networked. Elearning is the latest evolution in education and training world. The first electronic facilitates to traditional method teaching was computer based training, then it evolves with CD-ROM application to individual teaching in PCs then its move to local-area networks (LAN). And now e-learning move forward to web based training, courseware developed specially delivered via internet and intranet. Currently in Malaysia education environment, most of e-learning being applied in closed system where the process teaching and learning focused on institution content and context of teaching and learning. And each of higher education which applied this application will face different format and data. As examples of e-learning system in Malaysia are I-learn Portal, E-learning noodle and etc. E-learning can be defined as commonly referred to the intentional use of networked information and communications technology in teaching and learning. A number of other terms are also used to describe this mode of teaching and learning. They include online learning, virtual learning, distributed learning, network and web based learning.[1]. This research will be focused on new era of e-learning which help students getting knowledge in an attractive way. Plus they can share the knowledge and information not only in their environment, but other people. There is some disadvantages of e-learning that we can cope with the born of new social learning framework. These are the list as below: 1. Eye-contact: the application e-learning with using technology and computer based will discourage the communication face-to-face. 2. Non-verbal: e-learning communication via internet will reduce the use of verbal communication like collaborative learning. 3. Access: even though e-learning can be the best platform for distance learning, the access issues always become the problems due to the lack of resources like computer or internet provider.

4. Cost: cost is the main problems when we dealing with technology. As we know technology is rapidly change and require update and changing. When new technology arrives, and the student had difficulties in cost, e-learning will become useless. 5. Resources: resources or content will be limited to the institution itself. The sharing and delivering knowledge is limit. 6. Lack of mentorship: most of the e-learning program is designed for personal environment learning. Lectures or mentor cannot measure the performance of the student and what talents the student has. There are some elements in e-learning that support teaching and learning process. Please refer to Table X to show the elements involves.

Social network

Social network become widely used by people around the world. Social networking sites like Facebook, Myspace, Freindster and etc are increasingly used in peoples daily life and business world. With this application, peoples are expanded their connection with sharing their interest, experiences and also life history. Currently Facebook become a platform to do the business. It is because the personal information embedded in social networking site as identifier as potential customer to generate the business income. In spite of the application itself, the elements in social networking site make people easy to understand. The idea come when social networking site become main platform for people get connected. This research will use social networking elements and criteria to develop social learning. Below is the statistic shown the hit user website and include social networking tools. This tools can be use to develop a good social learning.

As Facebook become the most popular site being visit, I will take Facebook as my main reference in creating social learning application.

Table shown that visitors from Malaysia who hit Facebook by year. In early of April 2010, the visitors start with 2million people and its start increase the number of visitor in March 2011. At this moment, we can see that the visitors exceed 4million in this year.

Social learning Nowadays, new generation had been born with growth of computers technologies, communication and information overload. And then, it will create one situation where they will depend on technologies especially in education purposes. The aims of social learning will support the learners to connect and communicate with the right person and content and also will motivates all students/people to learn. Now, learning is limitless to time and space. Based on Abbott(2007), he stated that social learning theory is talks about how both environmental and cognitive factors can interact to influence human behavior. It focuses on the learning that occurs within a social context. Its consider that people learn from one another, including a concept of observational learning, imitation and also modeling [2]. And social learning will integrate social network application with e-learning application. As we can see here, Albert Bandura is trying to elaborate what is social learning theory we can use in created social e-learning application. The opinion differ with this writer who wrote social learning as a process of teaching and learning by using some tools as social media platform or known as Social learning tools. He said that some social network application like social book marking, blogging, RSS/Feed Reader, micorblogging tools (Twitter, Tweet Deck), e-mail, Instant Messaging(Skype), mind mapping tools, Presentation (sharing) tools, Wiki, Podcast, Content Management system (CMS), Social networking tools (Facebook, Linkedin, Ning etc), Social Networking Analysis (SNA) can be tools to develop social learning [3]. This research will illustrate how social network technologies emerging with e-learning. There are some reasons why people choose social network to get connected. Through social networking, people will be able to keep in touch with current friends, reconnect with old friends and also to create real-life friendship through similar interest. Beside they can connect with their friends; they also can establish important relationship members by joining groups or forums. In addition social networking site can help people to find a job and established business.

From social network, will be merging with e-learning to create new phenomena in education world.

CHAPTER 3 RESEARCH METHODOLOGY 3.1 INTRODUCTION In order to generate data that answered the research questions that formulated in chapter 1, this chapter will describe and explain the sampling plan and data used in this study. This chapter is divided into 2 sections. The first section explains the research design, unit of analysis, selection of correspondent, data collection, and a plan for data analysis. The second section will provide an assessment of reliability and validity of the measured to be used.

1.2 Research design The study is focus on descriptive research methods which gathering appropriate data and can meet the objectives of studies, as well as follow the identification based on several factors. In this research will involves two phase which are the data gathering phase and synthesis phase. In gathering data phase, all information related with e-learning, social network and social learning will be collect. All the information is based on many forms like book, paperwork, journal, conference papers and so on. In this research, internet will be the main platform to gather information. Many e-books, online journal and online databases will be collect

from library portal. All the sources will be gathering and analyze. The result will be use in the further research phase. In the second phase, the data collected will be use to create new framework social learning which include elements in social network and e-learning that support teaching and learning process. The output will be use to develop social learning application so then can help student expand their learning scope. (iam not sure about this sub topic)

1.3 Population A population in this research had been identified which consist of two categories. First categories is a staff or lecturers who will evaluate and use this system as motivator. While second category is students who will use this system and measure where they can adapt this social leaning to their learning environment. All the population will take from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia, Skudai correspondents. These populations come from Faculty of Science Computer and Information System.

1.4 Unit of Analysis For the unit of analysis of this research, the staff and students from Faculty of Science Computer and Information System, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia are the main focus. This is because these populations are familiar with the existing e-learning system.

1.5 Sample Basically, in Universiti Teknologi Malaysia there are many faculties which are Faculty of Computer Science and Information System (KIV)

1.6 Sample method The sampling method that will be used in order to collect the information on the elements that appropriate to develop social learning application. In this research will use random sampling method which consists of Simple Random Sampling. Simple random sampling is a subset of individuals (a sample) chosen from a larger set of a population. Each individual is chosen randomly and entirely by chance, such that each individual has the same probability of being chosen at any stage during the sampling process, and each subset of k individuals has the same probability of being chosen for the sample as any other subset of k individuals [4] . (Yates. D , 2008) In this research, 30 correspondents will be use from Faculty of Computer Science and Information System which consist only for one category. So that 60 correspondents need to complete this research. The research medium as questionnaire will be used in order to fulfill the objectives of the research.
