II B.Tech I Semester(R07) Regular/Supplementary Examinations, December 2009 ELECTRICAL AND ELECTRONICS ENGINEERING (Common to Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering) Time: 3 hours Max Marks: 80 Answer any FIVE Questions All Questions carry equal marks

1. When a DC voltage is applied to a capacitor, the voltage across its terminals is found to build up in accordance with VC = 50(1-e100t ). After a lapse of 0.01 seconds, the current ow is equal to 2mA: (a) Find the value of capacitance. (b) How much energy is stored in the electric eld by that time? 2. Write short notes on the following: (a) Principle of operation of a DC generator (b) Construction and function of commutator (c) Lap and wave winding. [6+5+5] [16]

3. A 50 KVA, 3300/230V single phase transformer has a primary resistance and reactance of 3.45 and 5.40 ohms respectively. The secondary resistance and reactance are 0.0085 and 0.014 ohms respectively. Determine: (a) Equivalent impedance referred to both primary and secondary and (b) total copper losses. [16]

4. A 4-pole, 50 Hz induction motor has a full load slip of 5 %. Each rotor phase has a resistance of 0.3 ohms and a stand still reactance of 1.2 ohms. Find the ratio of the maximum torque to the full load torque and the speed at which the maximum torque occurs. [16] 5. Explain the following terms : (a) Absolute instruments (b) Secondary instruments. [16]

6. (a) The mobility of electrons and holes in a sample of intrinsic Germanium at room temperature are 0.36 m2 /V-s and 0.17 m2 /V-s, respectively. If the electron and hole densities are each equal to 2.5 1019 m3 calculate the conductivity (b) Discuss the following with respect to semiconductor: i. doping ii. dopant iii. donor and iv. acceptor. [8+8]

7. An SCR full wave rectier is connected to 230 V, 50 Hz mains to supply a.c. voltage to a resistive load of 10 for ring angle of 900 . Find the D.C. output voltage and load current. [16] 8. What is the specialty of a dual beam CRO? Explain its working with a block diagram. [16]

1. Write short notes on the following: (a) Active and passive elements. (b) Lumped and Distributed parameters. (c) Linear and Non-linear elements. (d) Bilateral and unilateral elements. [16]

2. Describe with a suitable sketches, the main parts of a dc machine. Explain the main functions of each part making specic reference to the properties of the material used for the construction of each part. [16] 3. (a) Derive the condition for obtaining maximum eciency, of a transformer. (b) A 25kVA single phase transformer has 300 turns on primary and 50 turns on secondary winding. The primary is connected to 1200V, 50Hz mains. Determine: i. Primary and secondary currents at full load ii. Voltage ratio & current ratio and iii. Secondary emf. 4. (a) Explain the constructional details of induction motors. (b) With neat graphs explain how the variation of slip and speed with torque in an induction motor will take place. [8+8] 5. Explain the classication of instruments based on display with required examples. [16] 6. (a) Explain how a PN diode acts as a switch. Explain how unidirectional current ow is possible through a PN junction diode. (b) The mobility of free electrons and holes in pure Silicon are 0.13 and 0.05 m2 /V-S and the corresponding values for pure Germanium are 0.38 and 0.18m2 /V-s respectively. Determine the values of intrinsic conductivity for both silicon and Germanium. Given that Ni = 2.5 1019 / m3 for Germanium and Ni = 1.5 1016 / m3 for Silicon at room temperature. [8+8] 7. (a) For a P-N-P transistor operating in the active region, draw a diagram indicating the various electron and hole current components crossing each junction and entering (or leaving) the base terminal. (b) Which Current components are proportional to the gradient of np at JE and Jc ? (c) Which current components are proportional to the gradient of Pn at JE and Jc ? (d) Indicate the sources of origin of the various current components crossing the base terminal. 8. (a) Determine the velocity and kinetic energy of an electron accelerated through Potential of 3kv. (b) Calculate the force on a charged particle of magnitude 2 coulombs moving in an electric eld of 2.5 v/m ? [8+8] [16] [8+8]

1. (a) Prove that the energy stored by the capacitor is 1/2 Cv2 . (b) A resistor with a current of 2 amperes through it converts 1000 Joules of electrical energy to heat energy in 15 seconds. What is the voltage across the resistor. [8+8] 2. A short compound wound DC generator supplies a load current of 150 amps at 230 volts. The generator has the armature resistance of 0.15 ohms, series eld resistance of 0.1 ohms,shunt eld resistance of 100 ohms. Calculate the EMF generated, if the brush drop is 2V per brush. [16] 3. (a) Derive the condition for obtaining maximum eciency, of a transformer. (b) A 25kVA single phase transformer has 300 turns on primary and 50 turns on secondary winding. The primary is connected to 1200V, 50Hz mains. Determine: i. Primary and secondary currents at full load ii. Voltage ratio & current ratio and iii. Secondary emf. 4. Explain the equivalent circuit of an induction motor and later simplify it with the stator side. [8+8] [16]

5. A 230 V, 5-A meter on a full load test makes 61 revolutions in 37 seconds. If the normal disc speed is 520 revolutions /kWh, calculate the percentage error. [16] 6. (a) If two similar germanium diodes are connected back to back and the voltage V is impressed upon, calculate the voltage across each diode and current through each diode. Assume similar value of I0 = 1 a for both the diodes and = 1. (b) In the case of an open circuited p - n junction, the acceptor atom concentration is 2.4 1016 /m3 and donor atom concentration is 2.5 1022 /m3 . Intrinsic concentration ni is 2.5 1019 /m3 . Determine the value of contact dierence of potential. [8+8] 7. (a) A sinusoidal voltage Vi = 200 sin 314ft is applied to an SCR whose forward break down voltage is 150 V. Determine the time during which SCR remains OFF. (b) What is the advantages of TRANSISTOR over SCR? 8. (a) What is ion spot in a C.R. lube using magnetic deection system ? (b) Dene the luminous eciency of a phosphor used in a C.R. tube? [8+8] [8+8]

(c) What is the power in watts if energy equal to 50 Joules is used in 2.5 Seconds? [8+4+4] 2. (a) Explain the principle of operation of DC motors. What is back emf in DC motors? What are its eects? (b) How is back emf produced in a DC motor? Also derive an expression for this emf. [8+8]

3. Draw the approximate equivalent circuit of a transformer referred to the Primary side and indicate how it diers from the exact equivalent Circuit. List the dierences. [16] 4. (a) Find the distribution factor in a 4-pole, 3-phase, 36 slots alternator. (b) Enumerate various methods used for minimizing harmonics in turbo- Alternators. 5. Explain the dierent types of controlling torque with neat diagrams. 6. (a) Explain the eect of temperature of a diode. (b) Distinguish between avalanche and Zener mechanisms. [8+8] [8+8] [16]

7. For a P-N-P transistor biased in the active region, draw diagrams plotting for emitter, base and collector regions; (a) The potential variation (b) Minority carriers concentration. Explain the shape of these plots. [16]

8. (a) Why does an electron take a cycloidal path when it is exposed to perpendicular electric and magnetic elds? (b) Two parallel plates are kept a distance 12 mm apart. One plate is 800 V positive with respect to the other. An electron starts from rest from the negative plate. Find the distance traveled, time taken and the kinetic energy of the electron when it has acquired a speed of 5 106 m/s. At this instant, the potential across the plates is suddenly removed. Find the total time of travel of the electron from the negative plate to the positive plate. [8+8]
