Teletech Holdings
Principal Systems Engineer & UNIX Team Lead

Sept. 2007 - Present

Full Time Employee

The Corporate UNIX team supports over 300 servers globally, from design through production steady state. The heterogeneous environment utilizes AIX, Solaris, and RedHat in varying capacities. We support Oracle 9i and 10g on both AIX and Linux, as well as many different home-grown applications on Linux and Solaris. Here are some of my major contributions and successes while at Teletech:

Major cost savings utilizing Open Source Using Open Source technologies such as KeepaliveD, HAProxy and nginx, I was able to save Teletech and a major US client over $100,000 in dedicated hardware costs, while still realizing near 100% uptime. PCI & SOX Compliance Teletech has been through two major PCI audits in the last two years. My security expertise and diligent documentation have been instrumental in passing these audits with flying colors. I personally ensured that critical servers in the DMZ were updated to take advantage of the robust security SELinux provides. Server Consolidation & Cost Savings Supporting a global 24x7 heterogeneous environment with only three Systems Engineers fostered the need to consolidate and simplify. Weve utilized VMWare, Solaris Containers, and migrated Oracle from large, expensive AIX servers to small Dell servers running Linux. The power & cost savings have been enormous. Global Standards & Cooperation The Corporate UNIX team works closely with IT departments around the world. I have personally taken extra steps to work cooperatively with these groups to provide more efficient and effective support for the UNIX environment. The operational documentation & procedures Ive written are currently in use globally.

Cendant Corporation
Senior Systems Engineer

Jan. 2005 Sept. 2007

Contract 01/05 03/06, FTE 03/06 09/07

Cendant was previously known as Galileo, and more recently as Travelport. I was part of the Hardware Configuration Management (HCM) team. We were responsible for engineering infrastructure and procedures for many different internal development projects that ultimately end up in the 24x7 production environment. Aaron Ciarlotta Detailed Work Experience, Contributions, and Successes. HCM was responsible for the entire process from design through steady-state production support. We wrote procedural documentation and training for production hand-off, and provided after hours support. We also provided tier 3 support for the performance lab, and were frequently consulted to assist with production issues. Here are some of my major contributions and successes while at Cendant:

$120,000 Per Month Cost Savings The realized goal of the Dynamic Connection Construction (DCC) project was to save over 1.4 Million dollars per year by moving a critical, travel related data processing function from a costly mainframe to a horizontally scalable, load-balanced Linux cluster. I personally developed the framework, scripts, procedures and documentation for the DCC application and received special recognition for my work. Offered Lead Systems Engineering Role in China Due to my proven work ethic and outstanding engineering track record, I was offered the Lead Systems Engineering role in a data center duplication effort. Cendant was approached to build out a Shared Travel Platform (STP) environment in China to accommodate the travel rush during the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games. Unfortunately Cendant did not win the contract. Increased Maintenance Efficiency & Reduced Downtime I personally developed, documented, and maintained a custom process to update firmware and BIOS for over 500 IBM X-Series servers, HS20 Blades, and Blade Centers. The entire automated process was scripted using Open Source software, and was easily administered remotely. This process allowed a single Engineer maintain the same amount of servers that would normally require an entire team. Rapid, Parallel Bare-Metal Provisioning The process and procedures I developed allowed for rapid, parallel bare-metal provisioning, which increased efficiency and reduced production change management windows dramatically. Using Open Source tools and custom scripts, we were able to re-image many application servers in parallel. The automated process took a server from a blank hard drive to taking production traffic in under 10 minutes.

Volt Technical Services @Agilent

Senior UNIX/Linux Systems Engineer

Feb. 2004 Jan. 2005

Contract

I provided ongoing core administration, security administration, systems engineering and deep support for the UNIX/Linux Competency Center (UNIX-CC) of Agilent Technologies IT Services Hosting Organization and associated clients of VMC Consulting Corporation. Due to Agilents world-wide presence, I worked closely with business partners and colleagues in many different time zones. The team provided UNIX engineering services to initiatives and projects requiring in depth knowledge of UNIX processes, hardware solutions, software solutions, and associated standards. We met multiple technical internal project requirements and timelines while supporting diverse client organizations with varying and unique requirements. Here are some of my major contributions and successes while at Agilent:

Automated Account Administration Agilent management was unfortunately opposed to commonly used, convenient, centralized authentication such as NIS. This decision left the UNIX team with the huge undertaking of developing, maintaining and actively monitoring automated scripts to administer and audit hundreds of user accounts on over 850 UNIX servers. I personally assisted with the development and ongoing administration of those automated scripts Security Auditing The UNIX team utilized Power Broker for security monitoring. I was responsible for console replay investigations whenever there was a security incident. I also personally assisted with development and administration of the security scripts that checked for password complexity, expired passwords, and orphaned user accounts.

Pixxures
Senior Systems Administrator
Aaron Ciarlotta Detailed Work Experience, Contributions, and Successes.

April 2001 Jan. 2004

Full Time Employee

Responsible for complete administration of more than 50 Linux workstation and servers, and 10 Windows servers. Administration and up-keep included rebuilding the kernel to support the newest hardware and software available, while maintaining maximum production stability. I also administered the internal firewall, DNS, NIS, mail and web servers, as well as the Windows 2000 machines used by sales and marketing. Here are some of my major contributions and successes while at Pixxures:

Rapid Assimilation & Transition to Linux Prior to working for Pixxures, my Linux exposure was minimal. I was able to quickly dive in and become a Linux guru within weeks. Within my first month alone I was able to solve a persistent production problem that the existing UNIX Lead/Manager had been unable to solve. Overcoming Technology Challenges The GIS processes at Pixxures required bleeding edge technology in order to be efficient and profitable. Even with limited applicable Linux experience, I was able to utilize my strong analytical troubleshooting skills and tenacity to successfully solve those technical challenges. I utilized my ingenuity to overcome uncommon issues with unstable copper gigabit ethernet, USB & Firewire drivers, as well as the need for massive amounts of hot-swappable storage.

The rest of my past work experience with the companies listed in the first page summary has been left out for brevity. Even though I made significant contributions and realized different successes at these companies, the experience is old enough that it detracts from my current career objectives. However, please feel free to ask me about these past experiences, as they have indeed served as the foundation of my distinguished career.
