Media Center Policies and Procedures: An Overview

The media center operates on a flexible schedule from 7:45 to 2:30. Teachersupervised, whole class activities are scheduled using the online Google calendar located on the media centers web-page titled Media Center. Class Visits
Class visits are welcome and encouraged. Please schedule a class visit with the media specialist at least one week in advance. See the Information Literacy Plan for more information on types of class visits (including read-alouds, whole-class check-out, information literacy classes, research, and more)! You may schedule a class visit using the following methods: Stop by and visit the media specialist before or after school, during planning, or during lunch to request a date and time. While you are there, why not discuss possible collaborative lessons related to your curriculum plans! Email the media specialist with a requested date after checking for openings on the online Google Media Center calendar.

Student Check-outs
Students are the customers of our media center. To better serve each and every student, the following procedures are established. Students may be sent to the media center in groups of two-three at a time. Please make sure students have a pass and a purpose. Students in grades K-2 can check out 1 book at a time for a period of one week. *Second graders will be allowed to check out two books after the second half of the school year. Students in grades 3-5 can check out 2 books at a time for a period of one week. *Exceptions will be made for research assignments. Students may renew books as long as they have the book with them and no other books are overdue or on hold for another student. The frequency of visits by students will be left up to the discretion of the classroom teacher. *Please sign your class up for orientation as soon as possible. Orientation will last approximately 30 minutes.

Teacher Check-Outs
Teachers may check out materials for 30 days. If you need the materials longer, just send me an email and I will renew the item(s) for you! Reference materials should remain in the media center, but will be checked out to teachers for short periods of time for research purposes (and as long as no one else needs them).

Surveys
Online surveys will be distributed to teachers on a semi-regular basis. These surveys are important for the ongoing operation of the media center. The surveys will be short and offer opportunities for teachers to express concerns or give suggestions. I am always open to suggestions and value your professional opinions.

Media Committee
Come join the Media Committee! The media committee consists of the media specialist, one representative from each grade level, an administrator, and a parent. The media committee will meet once a month in person to discuss a variety of topics. Other ways of collaborating may include email and/or Google documents. Topics will include, but are not limited to, the following: - Media center policies and handbook - Volunteer program - Media center special events - AR - Technology resources - Reconsideration of challenged materials - Grant sources
