NOTTINGHAM TRENT UNEIVERSITY SCHOOL OF ARCHITECTURE, DESIGN AND THE BUILT ENVIRONMENT ARCITECTURAL SCIENCE AND ENVIRIONMENTAL CONTROL

COURSEWORK 2008/09 To Ahsim Raza, Date;- February 2011 Dear Ahsim This document contains your personal air conditioning assessment for the academic year 2009-10 as noted in the Architectural Science and Environmental Control (Conm20007) Module Booklet. 11. A copy of this page must be included with the answer ASSESSMENT; For the building shown on drawing number B/A2/1042 calculate the Summer (Pt. A) and Winter (Pt. B) air supply air conditions for a proposed single zone air-conditioning system that will maintain the desired comfort conditions in the Conference Room. For the purpose of this exercise the fresh/re-circulated air ratio is 25%;75% The solution to the above problem must be based on the following design conditions; For the purpose of the Air conditioning in winter only (Part B) the winter heat losses from the Conference Room may be assumed to 10.453 Kw. This is a convenient and value not a measure of your answer For the purpose of this assignment the area of the Conference Hall is 204 m2 Table I ITEM Student I.D. N0270227

Continued overleaf. A COPY OF THIS PAGE MUST BE INCLUDED WITH THE ANSWER Part A From the data in Table I calculate;i) The mass flow rate of the supply air (30%) ii) The summer supply air condition to the Conference. This should include;a. The moisture content b. The dry bulb temperature c. The wet bulb temperature d. The percentage saturation e. The specific enthalpy (30%) iii) (15%) Calculate the Sensible Cooling that is applied to the mixed air.

Part B For the winter conditions calculate the;i) The winter supply air condition. This should include a. The dry bulb temperature b. The moisture content c. The percentage Saturation (15%) ii) With respect to the efficient use of energy comment on the process taking 100%, warm, external summer air and cooling and dehumidifying the air for a large office with normal use of lights and equipment. Suggest how the cost of conditioning the air may be reduced without incurring a cost penalty. (10%) Total = 100%

The solution to the above requires that all psychrometric data for the solution is neatly marked and notated on a psychrometric diagram (A4 minimum) that shows the design parameters and the air-state solutions to the problem Please note that the above Marking Scheme may differ from the original scheme that was outlined in the Module Booklet
