Social Skills Group

the social skills group allows children to improve social, communication, and play skills in a small peer group. the main goal of the group is to help children feel confident and successful in social situations by providing a structured and supportive environment in which to explore and play. each week, the group plays seated and active games, eats a snack together, has a lesson/group discussion time, and goes out to the playground (weather permitting). the group serves children with a variety of challenges, including HFa, pddnos, add/adHd, anxiety, and sensory processing/integration issues, as well as those without an official label who are having trouble making friends. each group consists of a facilitator, instructor (Kate mcClain), and one-to-two assistants and is limited to a maximum of eight children to ensure an optimal amount of attention for each child. We ask for an eight week commitment at a time, but the program is ongoing as long as your child is working on specific outcomes. the class is specifically designed for children who can interact verbally with minimal prompts; staff will screen participants to determine eligibility. registration will be handled through the screening process. if you are interested, please contact the therapeutic recreation office at 703-228-4736 or trinfo@arlingtonva.us to set up a screening for eligibility in a group. Cost is $32 per class/per week. langston-Brown, rm. 106.
