Bosch 235 watt solar panels are mono-crystalline solar modules which aim to offer "high efficiency", "powerful performance" and "excellent value for money" for the customer. Manufacturer Bosch Solar Energy "pledges to ensure an exceptional price/performance ratio and delivers products of truly outstanding value". (Ref. 1) According to our calculations, Bosch solar panels certainly deliver good value in terms of an average price per watt paid by the end-consumer. For example, our own online shop - Solar Shop International - offers Bosch mono-crystalline modules at $2.86 per watt. At the same time some other mono-crystalline solar panel brands, such as Sharp and SolarWorld, are offered at between $3.01 and $3.31 per watt.

Let's have a closer look at further characteristics of Bosch 235 watt solar panels (specifically, the c-Si M 60-235-16 model).

Solar Cells' Raw Material:

Mono-crystalline silicon Email Name

Then

As already stated above, Bosch 235 watt solar panels are made of mono-crystalline silicon. Mono-silicon is made of single silicon crystals which are first grown in the shape of cylinders and then cut into "wafers" to produce mono-crystalline solar cells. Mono-silicon has a higher efficiency conversion rate than polycrystalline silicon. Bosch Solar Energy states that their new generation of

mono-solar cells (introduced in 2010) features the highest performance of any other cells used by the company until this moment. Bosch solar cells' average efficiency conversion rate is 18%, with an average output of up to 4.26 watts per cell. (Ref. 2) It should be noted though that mono-silicon is expensive to produce, with a lot of silicon waste usually generated during its manufacturing process.

Rated Power (Pmpp):

235 Watt

Pmpp (or rated power) is the maximum nominal power output of a solar panel measured at Factory Standard Test Conditions (STC). In simple terms, STCs require that a solar panel receives 1000 watts per square meter of solar irradiance at a solar cell's temperature of 25C. It means, that this Bosch solar panel when rated at STC produces 235 Watt of power per hour when it receives 1000 watts per square meter of solar irradiance at 25C. However, the solar industry generally acknowledges that STCs are not real world (but just factory) conditions. More realistic conditions have been set by an alternative PTC measure (PVUSA Test Conditions) developed in California, US.

PTC Power Rating:

203.4 Watt

PTCs require that a solar panel receives 1000 watts per square meter of solar irradiance at 20C temperature of the air at 10 meters above the ground, and wind speed of 1 meter per second at 10 meters above the ground. PTC ratings are lower than STC ratings. The PTC rating of Bosch 235 watt solar panels (the c-Si M 60-235-16 model) is 203.4 Watt. (Ref. 3) So if you purchase this model, you will actually get something closer to 203 Watt per hour from using it, rather than advertised 235 Watt. Although the real output will, of course, depend on many other conditions as well. It is also interesting to note that Bosch Solar Energy point to "high annual yields" generated by their panels. Such annual performance is achieved, they state, thanks to the quality mono-crystalline cells which perform well even in weak light. (Ref. 4)

Solar Module's Voltage:

36.48 V 29.41 V

Open Circuit Voltage (Voc) Maximum Power Voltage (Vmpp)

Open circuit voltage (Voc) is a maximum voltage produced by a solar panel when there is no current running through it. At this point, the solar panel doesn't produce power as such (power (watt) = volt x current). What we are more interested in is the maximum power voltage (Vmpp). Vmpp is the maximum nominal rating for the voltage produced when the current runs through the panel as well (i.e. when the actual watt power is generated). So, the maximum power voltage for this Bosch 235 watt solar panel is 29.41 V.

Solar Module's Current:

8.47 Amp 7.99 Amp

- Short Circuit Current (Isc) - Maximum Power Current (Impp)

Likewise, short circuit current (Isc) is a maximum current produced by a solar panel when there is no voltage running through it. Maximum power current (Impp) is produced when the voltage runs through the

panel. The maximum power current for this Bosch 235 watt solar panel is 7.99 A.

If power (watt) = Volt x Current, then the maximum nominal power output of this panel will be: 29.41 V x 7.99 A = 235 Watt

Solar Cell's Efficiency:

18 %

This property indicates how efficient this Bosch panel's solar cells are at converting solar light they receives into usable solar power. Like we mentioned above, the efficiency rate of monocrystalline solar cells is much higher than that of polycrystalline ones. The efficiency rate of these Bosch solar cells is roughly 18%. Please note that there is a difference between the efficiency rate of a solar cell and that of a solar module as such. A solar module's efficiency will always be lower than that of an individual cell's. The average efficiency rate for each Bosch solar module is 14.6%. (Ref. 5) The higher the efficiency rate, the more power a solar cell / panel can generate per given area. This indicator is usually used to compare the performance of different solar panel brands to each other, but is not necessarily the most relevant one for making a purchasing decision. We take the view that the high cost of mono-silicon solar panels doesn't always justify such an investment, although Bosch solar panels genuinely offer good value for money.

Nominal Operating Cell Temperature (NOCT):

48.4C

NOCT is the temperature reached by open circuited cells in a solar panel under a set of conditions which are closer to "real world" than STC requirements. The lower this temperature is, the better the panel will work (i.e. more efficient). NOCT temperatures below 47C are considered to be good.

Temperature Coefficient (Rated Power):

-0.51% / K

The rated-power temperature coefficient shows how much power your solar panel will lose when this panel's temperature rises by 1C above 25C. So, this Bosch 235 watt solar panel will lose roughly 1.2 Watt per 1C temperature rise above 25C. The lower the temperature coefficient is, obviously the better.

Other Issues The company states that the manufacture of all solar panel components is done internally (and not outsourced) which guarantees "exceptionally high product quality" for all Bosch solar panels.

Warranty Bosch Solar Energy provide the following warranty conditions for their panels: 10 years product warranty
