SMALL GROUPS This is 4 groups that may rotate. The times can be adjusted to meet your needs. Kids can be divided into 4 small groups or you can do the Bible lesson all together with music and the craft, snack, and scripture in three separate stations. Golden Instructions from the Word Station (30 minutes) Man Overboard Bible Message/Lesson Suggestion: Present the lesson using good voice inflection and try not to read it, rather tell it. Wear a captain, sailor, or fish hat and act out the motions as you speak. Introduction: Ask, What is the biggest fish you have ever seen? Allow them to share responses. Then say, do you think you could fit inside of that fish? Say, "We are going to hear a story about a man who was swallowed by a fish." This is a true story that happened many years ago before Jesus came to the earth as a baby. In our lesson last week, God told Jonah to go to Nineveh and preach to the people. However, Jonah did not want to go so he got on a boat headed for Tarshish. While he was on this boat, God cause a hugh storm to come upon them. The men were frightened and decided to draw straws to see who was the cause of this frightening weather. The short lot fell on Jonah. Jonah told the men the truth about himself and that they needed to throw him overboard. The men did not want to do this, but thought it was best to do what Jonah said if they had any hope for survival. When they did this, God caused the storm to cease and they were in awe. They all worshipped God due to this. In the meantime, God caused a whale to come along and swallow Jonah. New Lesson: Then, Jonah prayed (Fold hands in prayer or even kneel) to God in heaven from the belly of the large fish. He prayed: Oh Help me, God! Please hear my prayer for I have sinned. I hate it in this stinky fish among all this seaweed. Please get me out of here, and I will do what you want me to do. I will obey you this time. Help me oh, God. (Raise hands) I will truly do what you say! Then, God caused the fish to vomit Jonah up (Burp sound) on the seashore. Now, Jonah this is your second chance (Hold up two fingers): "Go (Get up) to the big wicked city of Nineveh and tell the people about me. (Hold Bible) They need to turn their hearts towards me. I want to help them. So Jonah started off (Begin walking) walking toward the city of Nineveh, He walked and walked. It took him a long time to get there. (Spread arms). It took Jonah (Hold up three fingers) three days to get where God wanted him to go. When Jonah got to the city, he preached (Hold Bible and wave arm), He told them God was going to destroy the city (Big clap of hands). The people of Nineveh listened (Hands over ears), and turned to God (Shake head up and down). The King called for a fast all over the whole city to show their repentance. He called for everyone to do the same.

The king (Put on a crown) of Nineveh, took off his royal robes (Throw crown down), dressing in burlap. (Show some burlap) and sat down in the dirt. (Sit on floor legs crossed) Next, (Get back up) he made a proclamation throughout Nineveh, that no one could drink any water (Hold up cup of water), or eat any food food (Hold up slice of bread). Everyone (Sweep arms for everyone) was called to (Turn around), turn away (Turn back around) from their sin (Write sin on the board) Who knows? (Hands gestured outward and raise shoulders) Maybe, God will change his mind about what he is going to do and forgive us! (Raise arms high on live) God looked down from heaven and saw (Put on glasses) there earnestness and how they were sorrow for their sin, and He changed his mind about what He was going to do. God is a merciful God! (Message Bible reference)

Questions for Discussion (Allow several children to respond to each question) 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. How do you think Jonah felt in the belly of the whale? Why do you think God caused this to happen? In what ways does God try to get out attention? Write answers on the board. How do you think God feels when we will not listen? How do you your parents feel when you do not listen to their advice? In what ways can we listen to God? Write answers on the board.

Allow all the children to find a golden coin in the sand box to take with them if they answer a question or participate. Tell them it is a reminder of the treasure that we find in knowing Jesus as our personal Savior, and how he will help us to obey him. They are to find this with their bare toes (No hands allowed) Watch the fun! Treasure from the Word Station (30 minutes) (Scripture Memorization) 1. Lay out the Bible verse that they can begin coloring in the letters as they arrive. Put a bible out for each child on the table. Say: When God saw what they did and how they turned from their evil ways, he relented and did not bring on them the destruction he had threatened. (Jonah 13:10) 2. Model read the scripture verse for the children. 3. Next, read all together. Tell them what page where the verse is found. 4. Finally, ask a couple of children if they would like to read it all by themselves to the class. Say: God is all-knowing. He sees everything that happens in our lives. He knows when we are lying and when we are being honest. He knows when we act one way and do something else. He knows when we hide things under our beds, or when we do a good job cleaning out the closet. He knows when we go to church, or when we stay home to

watch TV instead. He knows everything. He knows when we study for a test or when we go and act like we have studied making a low grade. He knows everything about us the good and the bad. Yet, God loves us just the same. It does make his sad when we do not do the right thing. God was not pleased with Jonah and he wanted to teach him a lesson. He caused the big fish to swallow him. When Jonah decided to obey God, then he caused the whale to spit him on the shore. Evil is the things we do that are sinful. When we repent of our sins, God will forgive us, and we will go to heaven someday. God forgave Jonah and used him to help the people turn from their sins. 5. Give each child a copy to take home. See below for a copy to send home with them. 6. Pass out the WORD BANK lesson. Give a sticker or treat when completed. 7. Play the following jeopardy game if there is time. Extra: Fill in the missing letters. Instructions: Place a large quilt (single bed size) that is made in 8.5 X 11 square pieces on the wall. Tape to each material square, a sheet of paper that will say at random these words on the back side that the kids cannot see: Say the verse and dig for gold. Allow the kids one at a time to select a square and turn it over. If it says say the verse, they must say the verse. If it says dig for gold let them fish through the treasure chest and find a prize to take home, or give them a sticker. I use a plastic fish container with candy in it. You can keep the same squares to use over weekly. Give smaller children the whale. You will need to make dots and spell JONAH for them to connect. Sea Snack Station (30 minutes or less) Fish sticks and fries. Have prepared ready in advance. Allow the children to serve themselves and select a couple fish sticks and fries. Provide napkins. They need to be polite in line and wait their turn. Be sure to teach these good manners.

Craft Fun Station (30 minutes) Fisher of Men Door Hanger. Print copies of the whale using cardstock. Provide each child a whale. Allow them to trace the whale on a blue foam sheet. Provide safety scissors for younger children. Cut out. Using a hole puncher make a hole in the mouth of the fish. Provide a string to tie in the hole. The children will be able to take home and hang on their front door or bedroom door. Write on it in marker Jesus Saves Provide stickers to add to the blue foam. Additional: coloring pages provided if needed.
