Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs) in Honolulu:

An Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU) is a separate additional living unit, including separate kitchen, sleeping, and bathroom facilities on an existing or new residential lot. ADUs would only be allowed if properties meet certain requirements, which are intended to maintain the existing character of the neighborhood, including: the property owner lives in either the main house or ADU, one additional parking stall is provided on the property, the lot is large enough to meet yard requirements, ADU floor area is limited to 1,000 square-feet max, ADU's may not be subdivided or CPRd separately from the main house, Neighborhoods may opt-out of ADU-zone How the Community Benefits: Improves housing affordability by increasing the supply of housing units; Supports multigenerational living with separate entry and second kitchen; Supports seniors with accommodations for caregivers and/or supplemental rental income for long term care needs.
