Project Revolution

An Exploration of Change in Society

11th grade - First Semester

Project Description
The purpose of Project Revolution is for students to examine the intricacies of society, and to
discover how the changes through time lead to the development of American culture and technology.
Students will also explore the interdependency of historical events and determine their impact
nationally and/or globally. By the conclusion of the semester, students will demonstrate their
cumulative knowledge using various means of oral and written communication.

Essential Question
All revolutions begin with small changes in thought or act. Why do some small changes lead to
revolution while others do not?

Project Components
1. Research (100 pts) [I]
Students will embark on a thorough and in-depth research journey. They will be exploring
valuable resources regarding their chosen science revolution. All found research must be
accompanied by a paragraph detailing rationale that justifies its importance and validity.

2. V.I.P. Website (100 pts) [G]

Students will select a scientific revolution and identify the key person of their chosen revolution.
They will then create an informational web page written from the viewpoint of that person. The
site will include, but is not limited to, biographical information and blog entries that detail the
events before, during and after the specified revolution.

3. Magazine (200 pts total) – Articles [I] and Layout [G]

Students will expand upon their scientific revolution and identify the key people and events leading
up to and during the revolution. Students will publish a news magazine that showcases their
research in an aesthetic, informative and school-appropriate manner, utilizing expository and
persuasive writing techniques. See Article Descriptions in packet.

4. Price Analysis (100 pts) [G]

Students will conduct a survey and complete a mathematical analysis to decide their magazine’s
price in order to optimize revenue.

5. Documentary (100 pts) [G]

Students will create a 3-5 minute video documentary that illustrates the impact of their revolution
on the community today. The film will convey an introductory explanation of their revolution, an
interview segment, and any other relevant information the group may deem necessary.

6. Science Model (100 pts) [G]

Students will construct an accurate model illustrating the inner workings and technology of their
chosen scientific revolution. The model may need to be accompanied by a detailed blueprint if the
model itself does not provide an explanation of all of the invention’s significant parts. All models
must have a written half-page description summarizing their mechanics.

7. Revolution Expo ’08 (100 pts) [G]

Students will present the previously completed components along with an interactive display that
highlights a significant aspect of their revolution.

This article will explore the evolution of your scientific topic. It will detail the events and/or important figures that led
to its inception. It will also demonstrate a thorough and comprehensive knowledge of how your discovery functions.

Historical Impact Article

This article will explore your revolution’s impact on culture/society, either negatively or positively, in regards to the
ideals forming the revolution and its origins. This paper will cite historical evidence for support.

Persuasive Article
This article will be written in the voice of a historical figure who is directly related to and knowledgeable about your
scientific revolution. It will identify a specific target audience and will attempt to persuade this audience that your
scientific revolution has either a positive or negative effect on them.

Statistical Analysis
This article will articulate an argument that proves your topic is revolutionary using real life data. The data used must
be a measurable quantity that demonstrates cultural impact. (This can be economic data, demographic data, etc.). The
article will compare data from before and after the revolution, take into account the possibility of random fluctuations,
